Field Trip
OK, we did absolutely
nothing today that resembled PA. Not sure it resembled good field
trip preparation by public school standards, either. Maybe we
just took the day off? Not quite. This morning, my husband
decided he wanted to take us to the state fair. Last year was a
complete disaster...can we leave, how much longer, I'm tired, I'm
bored...I did not wish this to be repeated, so I made up a scavenger
hunt. I hoped this would keep her interested through more
exhibits. It worked out well...we found the last two on the way
out. Who would have thought 'rabbit' and 'balloon' would have
been so hard to find? Luckily, there was a balloon etched in the
sidewalk, and she found a rabbit sewn into a quilt. We also
examined the chick display. They had little embryos at various
stages of development in little jars to look at. We watched the
little chicks trying to hatch, too. We got to see several litters
of baby mice at different ages. We even got to see the
development of a human baby and play with the little unborn baby
displays. It all ended with a funnel cake...it was on
her scavenger hunt, and she had never had one before. My husband
and I talked about the recent definition of 'fun' we got from Miss
Dang's seminar (vulgar merriment.) Now, as the original meaning
of vulgar means nothing more than 'common' and all negative
connotations have been added since then, we decided that that was an
apt term for the day. It was fun. Vulgar/common
merriment. Is that all bad? Not so long as it is kept in
its place, we decided.
