Principled Discovery

This is actually from a lesson from earlier.  But here is my little one, created in the image of God:

And here is the little girl she made, in her own image:

Wouldn't it be nice if little clay people could do our work?  Isn't it exciting that we can do the work of Him who created us?

Yesterday, we did not do much.  She balked at a portion of her work and was dragging it out.  I heard myself tell her to "just do it so it will be done."  I decided that was not an adequate reason for any work so we stopped for the day.

For bible study, we are working through the commandments.  Today we began idolatry.  She did not know what a graven image was.  I wondered if there was any sense to making a graven image to illustrate the concept of "make unto thee no graven image."  Instead, we searched the house for things that had been engraved.  Later we will talk about how this does not apply to artwork, but strictly to idolatry.

Our spelling/handwriting is going well.  I think we have done 36 phonograms now.  I'm looking forward to our first spelling tests.  She enjoys spelling.

She is practicing her math right now.  She so desperately just wants to know these facts without doing the work.  So she guesses and guesses.  She has finally consented to figuring out the problems and is doing the work.  Funny how she does this so much better when I am ignoring her.  This afternoon, our only plans are to go on a brief nature walk to collect items for our art project.  We are doing the paper arts class that Anna-Marie has been gracious enough to host.  The first class is on stamping and we decided nature would supply our stamps.

I am contemplating offering something similar, except with clay.  If anyone would be interested, let me know.  If there is enough interest, I'd be happy to go through the effort.  Copolymer clay is fun because there are so many neat things for the beginner to do, but there are some pretty advanced techniques for those who are truly gifted.  I'm not, but I can make all kinds of cute little things...even show a six year old how to make a little figure of herself!
