Yesterday was a pretty
typical day. No major hitches and nothing really exciting.
For bible, we are continuing with our study of the commandments.
We talked about "make unto thee no graven image" for a bit, and she
understood that this is in reference to idolotry and actually bowing
down and worshipping graven images, not to art. She illustrated
"Do not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain." After leaving
her with the assignment, I thought, "That's a silly assignment."
How do you illustrate that? When she was done, she had someone
calling someone a "stoopid kau." I told her to write the
commandment at the bottom so we would no why on earth she had written
that for her notebook and left it at that. For math, we
reviewed our definitions. Arithmetic is counting. Addition
is counting forward. She understands the use of the manipulatives
very well, so I am introducing the use of a numberline to emphasize the
concept of arithmetic as counting. I printed off a simple numberline
and laminated it with clear contact paper. I gave her four
problems to work out, then she made up two of her own. She worked
the problems from her workbook (we are using Singapore math) and that
was it for math. I need to look up some scripture verses...I'm
thinking of looking at one of the OT censuses and, of course, the NT
census that brought Mary and Joseph to Jerusalem. We really
should have done that first, but I'm still learning, too.
We've been alternating history and art in the afternoons.
Yesterday, art was up. We looked at a picture of the tabernacle
and a picture of the brazen altar. We discussed its construction
and the God-given human skill used to build it. We talked about
its purpose in worship. Finally, got out my clay and let
her make her own representation of the brazen altar.
Unfortunately, we were making dinner and other things and I
accidentally burnt her model. Boy, does Sculpey stink when you
burn it! We might try again later. Here she is, trying to mold the flame. You can see the altar on the desk attached to popsicle sticks.
At bedtime, I read some more of Mary
Slessor, Queen of Calabar that we got with her Nigeria packet
from Voice of the Martyrs. Today is appointment day, so nothing formal planned. Tonight, I will try to write my next summary of the Katherine Dang seminar, and will finally get into the practical stuff. You'd think it wouldn't take so long to recap a two day seminar!
