This morning, I decided to
try something new. We just got a hymnal, and I found a hymn
relevant to our current bible study. It is called, "That Man is Blest Who, Fearing God,"
and is based on Psalm one. This would have worked out much better
if I could read music, and if I could carry a tune. It might have
even been quite enjoyable if I played any instrument whatsoever.
Still, not being one to be easily dissuaded over minor complications
like not having a clue, I pressed on. We sang the first verse a
couple of times and talked about it. I then read Psalm 1 to my
dd6. She read verse two and reasoned from that. Now that I
have found a midifile online with the tune, we will have some musical
accompaniment while we sing tomorrow.
Over dishes, we talked about what it means to "delight in the
law." It really does seem like an odd thing. While I'm sure
we all agree with the basic principles behind things like speed limits,
and traffic signals, I don't know anyone who actually delights in
them. I told my daughter that the significance of the Law is that
God in heaven chose to make a covenant, a special promise, with His
people here on Earth. He wanted to give them a wonderful gift
that they did not deserve. The Law would help protect them, like
our constitution protects us. HERE is an interesting study on the commandments I enjoyed.
We did things a little differently for spelling/handwriting
today. Instead of direct phonogram practice, I let dd6 surf
around on the blogs for awhile and she left a few comments.
Normally when she blogs, I just let her do her best on her own.
This time I sat beside her, listening to her sound out the words and
guiding her to the correct phonogram. I think maybe we will start
doing this once per week or so. I think it will make the whole
process a littel more meaningful for her. If anyone else has
children, especially girls, who would like to write back and forth via
blogging, let me know, or leave a message on her blog.
For math, we just reviewed Numbers 1:2 which we talked about and
reasoned from yesterday. We talked more about numberlines and
then did her workbook assignment. That worked out well. It
happened to be about numberlines. Can you tell I'm not real good
at planning ahead? That is why I don't like textbooks. Not
only is the material often dry and severly truncated, but it follows
its own plan which may or may not line up with my own. Ok, I do
plan ahead, but not so strictly. I know the concepts I want to
introduce and build on. I know what I want her to get from these
lessons. But I do not have dates attached to them. When she
masters one, we go on to the next.
After that, we went outside and played. We discovered that the
weeds in our front yard have an interesting construction. If you
pull them gently, they pull apart like a smaller straw being drawn out
of a larger one. Sometimes they squeak. We did that for
awhile, trying to figure out which ones would were most likely to
squeak and then had a grass fight. Now we are getting ready for
Karate. She tests in a couple weeks, and I think this is going to
be the first one that she does not pass. That's just fine; it's a
difficult belt to pass and she is young. But she advanced so
quickly, I'm afraid she has too much of an expectation to pass every
time. Oh well, that could be good for her as well.
