Principled Discovery

Sep. 16, 2005

Well, I've been tagged, so I guess anyone who follows this gets the treat of two blogs, today.  My tag questions are below for anyone who follows those.  Now I have to contemplate who to tag.

Not much going on today.  Things are slow when my husband is around.  I was getting ready to get started when my husband told dd6 she could go outside and play.  So I left it for this morning, then we had a doctor's appointment.  My baby is a big girl.  90th percentile for head size, 94th for weight and 80th for length.  She had her shots, but just got a second dose of Tylenol and is her happy self again.

We talked a bit about science.  I told her that science means knowledge or study.  We talked about what we can know about the world by studying and what that tells us about God.  I want to set two purposes for science.  The first is to gain knowledge about God and His provision for His creation.  The second is part of the "dominion mandate" to subdue our enviornment.  We'll be doing some application with this second part next week.  I'm planning a lesson on Louis Pasteur and the significance of his contribution to science, focusing on the process of pasteurization.  Then we are going to pasteurize...we bought some plums and peaches today to make jelly from.

This has nothing to do with anything, but I liked these pictures.  We went to the zoo last week...

Here is the dromedary taking my son's cone of pellets.

My favorite zoo exhibit ever is in the Hamburg zoo in Hamburg, Germany.  You can feed the elephants fresh fruit.  And if you don't have any, you can offer them money, and they take it with their trunks, too.  Food goes straight to the mouth; money goes straight to the keeper.

Here is my daughter holding a butterfly:

Oh, and just to make today a complete hodge-podge, here is an article worth reading if you enjoy being upset about the state of our world.  Homeschooling in Germany is illegal.  People not in compliance with mandatory school attendance laws are subjected to hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines, imprisonment and even can have their children removed from the home.  This poor family does not even homeschool.  They just did not let their child attend a field trip to a play they concerned ungodly.  And now they're facing imprisonment.  Don't think this is too far from us...the NEA's stated goal is to make homeschooling illegal in the USA.

About Me

"Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude."--Alexis de Toqueville
