History...The Stage for God's Plan for the Nations
All that time I spent on the computer last night, and I completely forgot today would be Friday when I woke up. But I've committed to sharing my lesson planning on a weekly basis at least.
In His-Story, we are studying the principle of Individuality and how God prepares individuals to bring about His plans. We are specifically looking at the beginning of Exodus. This encompasses several lessons, but through it you can see more or less how I develop lessons and how they progress through the unit.
The materials we have been using: The Bible, Draw Write Now, Kids Can Draw Ancient Egypt, Ancient Egyptians and Their Neighbors.
1) We looked at the difference between a leader and a ruler. Thanks to an old entry from principledmom (and if she can tell me the url to the post I'd love to link directly to it...hint, hint), we used the games Mother May I and Follow the Leader to demonstrate. The basic differences my daughter reasoned were these:
a) Leaders do what they ask of their followers as well. They follow the same path and do not exempt themselves. b) Leaders make decisions in the best interest of their followers. Rulers make decisions in their own best interests.
From this, she reasoned that Pharoah was a ruler and Moses was a leader.
She used the instructions in Draw Write Now to draw a pyramid at the top of her copywork and copied:
Exo 1:11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Rameses.
We discussed how the pyramids were probably already built when the Israelites came to Egypt. She also used the directions in Ancient Egyptians and Their Neighbors to make a sugar cube pyramid while we talked about how hard it was to work "in morter and brick."
2) We discussed the importance of scripture as a foundation. Following God's rules is not always easy, but we are blessed through it. We looked at the scripture surrounding the midwives...how they feared God so did not follow Pharoah's decress and were returned with "houses" of their own.
But Pharoah was a mighty ruler, so he issued another decree. Mouse used the Draw Right Now book to draw a crocodile resting on the edge of the river and copied this verse:
Exo 1:22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
Yesterday, we focused on how God "prepares a remnant." That God's promises will be fulfilled and now decree from any ruler, no matter how great he may be in man's eyes, will ever be able to ultimately thwart God's plan. She read Exodus 2:1-3. She noticed how Moses' mother followed the Pharoah's orders, even if it might not have been quite as he had intended.
She did no copywork, but I crocheted a long chain out of some old yarn. She wound it into a basket to remind her of the basket Moses floated down the Nile in.
The next topic we will be discussing is education...how Moses was uniquely prepared for the role he will be taking in the development of this story and a comparison between how God would educate in comparison to how man educates.
If you are sharing lessons, let me know and I'll link to you here. You can check out my blogroll in the sidebar to see others who have chosen to participate in sharing lessons. If you would like to participate on a regular basis, let me know and I'll add you there, too!
