Grace For Gayle

Feb. 7, 2007

Oh My, Gayle Has A Serious Thought!

Lately in the evenings, hubby has been reading a great kids biography series and our current book is on JFK.   (By the way, this series has some great biographies in it with lots of pencil drawings and interesting facts.  I highly recommend it!)

Who was John F. Kennedy?

Tonight we read a chapter about how big a deal it was that JFK was the first catholic president ever elected.  During his campaigning, the voters were concerned that his faith (and the pope) would influence him while in office.  His response?    He urged people to put aside their worries.  His religion was personal and would not interfere with being president.  That really struck something in me that made me question if his faith WAS personal or if it was just tradition.

My faith affects every aspect of my life; my decisions, my thoughts, my actions, my conscience.  There is no way to separate it from who I am or what I do!   Do I always do or say what’s right?  Do I always make good decisions?   Heck, no!  But my faith is always there either guiding my decisions or words, or being used to convict me to seek forgiveness.   My relationship with God is personal.   He’s a real live being that guides and comforts me, not a series of traditions or expectations.

So that really makes me question JFK’s faith.   If it doesn’t affect his entire life and he can keep it separate, locked away in a box to be pulled out only at certain times, well, is that true faith?

That is interesting (we love that series of books too btw). I have heard that GW Bush had a similar response when assuring people about his faith, but he said he would pray everyday and about every decision he made. I like that answer much better. Personally, I think the idea of a president WITHOUT faith is much scarier.

Blessings,
Courtney

That is a really interesting statement. I have heard people say things like that before. Our faith is not something that we should put in a box and take it out only when it is convenient or easy.

I agree wholeheartedly! The Lord has been really teaching me this same lesson over the last year and a half. Everyone's opinions, thoughts, words, and actions are governed by their worldview and when all is said and done there are truly only two categories that these wholeviews are based on. The first being a God-centered worldview based on the presupposition that God is the highest standard upon which all is to be judged and He is in complete control. Anything other than this is a man-centered worldview and is based on the presupposition that man is the highest standard upon which all is to be judged. Unfortunately- this has become a grey area in even many believers lives. They view some aspects of life from the humanistic view and some things from the Biblical view. Christians continue to put their children in the public school because they believe that education can be neutral and don't realize that even the teachers and textbooks are going to be presenting the subjects from either one or the other of these conflicting worldviews.

I agree. I think faith is not just who you are, but what you are. Whatever is really in your heart will be expressed in your words and actions.

I agree and have often wondered at the supposed "wisdom" of people who say rhetorical things like, "keep your religion out of office." I mean, we elect these people because they have beliefs similar to our own, right? And if a politician says he believes in right to life and no abortion, then we vote for him. But that's his personal belief! Why would we expect him to stick to one belief and not to another, his religious one?

It just don't make no sense whatsoever!

Glad I'm not the only one out there who gets it.

Many blessings,
Christi
