Marriage A Luxury Item?!?

This was the headline that caught my eye today….

Numbers drop for those married with children.  U.S. Census says 1 in 4 households have traditional families.  (They mean a married man and woman)

The article goes on to state that….

“The culture is shifting and marriage has become a luxury item, one that only the well educated and well paid are interested in,”  says marriage expert Isabel Sawhill.

Hmm…..very interesting.

First I’d like to set the record straight.   Whoever classifies luxury items (ie. Furs, jewels, caviar, big screen TV’s) with marriage has frankly NEVER BEEN MARRIED!  I don’t quite consider waking up in the middle of the night to the smell of a secretly released stink bomb and a long hairy man arm pinning me to the bed, a luxury.    Nor do I find that the self control it takes to keep my big opinionated mouth shut when my husband has dreamed up a plan to sell our home and live on a teeny tiny boat with our FOUR children, anywhere within the realm of pampered luxury.

I love the cuddles, laughs, companionship, personal growth and the product…….my kids.

BUT LUXURY?   You’ve got to be kidding.

Lady, this is work!

Mar. 7, 2007 - What a funny definition and application of the word luxury

Posted by bethanyrae
I guess it is a luxury to know that there is someone who cares about you and who has committed to be there for you. Someone who wants to live with you and raise a family with you. That it isn't just a temporary relationship of mutual convenience. The emotional well-being that comes from that really is a rarely had luxury today.
I just don't get the part about the education and the $$. ]

Mar. 8, 2007 - Luxury tax?

Posted by StillHisGirl
You had me laughing outloud. Where do I send my luxury tax so that I can continue to enjoy the luxury of more smelly laundry, more disgusting bathroom sinks, and nose hairs that are starting to hang out of his nostrils? Of course, truly I WOULD pay a luxury tax to have keep this man who loves me and is faithful and kind if required by law. Thanks for making me smile this morning!

Oh that is such a stretch of the definition of luxury! Too funny :) And what is it with the guys wanting to sell all and live cheap? My Dh is seriously contemplating buying land and an army tent to live in (with our 6 kids) while we build a house to avoid debt....where do they come up with it?

Mar. 8, 2007 - too funny

It makes it sound like marriage isn't important while starting a family. That is a sad thought.

Do you live in a boat yet? You know we're the more logical ones!! This is a funny post, funny article!

I'm glad to hear you are feeling stronger in your parenting. I know how it feels when you feel that things just aren't "synching". I hope things are still working for you!

Marriage, to me, is not a luxury, but certainly a gift. And work too, but, like parenting, work you love - and so worthwhile!

And I'm sorry you don't get to share all those tidbits about your grandma. She sounds like a character! :)
