Internet Filters

Anybody have any good advice about an internet filter?   My kids are wanting to do research on the internet and I'm getting really tired of standing over their shoulder or having them look away while I pull up a site and make sure it's not a naughty one.  People are so evil anymore.  I've heard of sites that are using addresses that are common misspellings of actual kid friendly sites so that they can lure kids in to their muck.    YUCK-O!  We've tried a downloadable filter before but that pretty much filtered out Every Site In The Whole Universe!      Any ideas?

I use the latest Firefox browser and it has a built-in filter. You can set it to most anything. Nate can only go on if the filter is set to high. I tested it and you can't even get 'hotmail.' Now that's my kind of filter!

I found our filter by going to a website that rated ten different filters and gave pros & cons of each. That was a few yrs ago, and I can't remember the name or url of the site! Perhaps you can find it if you do a search for "best internet filters" or "internet filter ratings". If that doesn't work, you can try what I did-- I actually found this site by typing in a search for CyberSentinal, a filter that someone had recommended to me. Instead of a site for CyberSentinal, the search brought up this ratings site (where, ironically, CS was rated only a 6 out of 10).

We ended up going with the site's top-rated filter, which is (or at least was at that time) ContentProtect. Besides filtering, it also keeps records and can be set to record IM dialogue. It isn't perfect-- like most filters, it overfilters sometimes & underfilters other times-- but it works well in most areas and is pretty user-friendly. It is a big pain to have to type in a password all the time, and it does slow up the internet (I think this is true of most filters), but that trade-off is worth it to me.

Hi Gayle,
That website I mentioned can be found at www.internet-filter-review.toptenreviews.com. (Sorry, it doesn't want to let me link.) I found it to be a very helpful site and I recommend you visit!

ContentProtect is still top-rated, tho it has bought out NetNanny and now goes by that name instead. 2nd-rated CyberSentinal looks great too, maybe even better-- I had a hard time choosing between the two and still would!

The main negative thing I experience w/ CP is that the time-block feature does not usually work (if it did, I would not be commenting right now b/c the way I have it set, it would have cut me off 2 minutes ago at midnight!) This may change when I get around to activating the updated version that i recently downloaded.

We use the AFA filter. It is customizable so that you (you being the one with the password) can add back in a site if they block it or you can change the categories that they block. So the kids computer gets mega blocked but mine is less stringent.
I think it is about $60 a year, To me its a bargain for the peace of mind it gives.

The site Dave Ramsey suggests is Bsafe Online. ( www.bsafe.com ) We recently added it to our computers. I love it. It is very simple to set up and is active any time you are online.
