Cicada - Jul. 30, 2005
Today, as I was immersed in reading a lively online debate about the new Harry Potter book and an apparent parody by Douglas Phillips, the back door opens. In runs my 8 yos, Noah, yelling,
"Molly, Molly, MOLLY!"
"What?!", I yell back, "Why do you need Molly?"
He slides to a stop, gulps and gushes,
"There's a BUG outside and we don't know if it is poisonous!!!"
"Well!", I laugh, "by all means, get Molly. I am sure she will know!"
(Molly is the 14 yod)
A few minutes later, I am in the bathroom and I hear them congregating at the door. Deep sigh as I wonder why I can never have ONE uninterrupted visit to the bathroom.
As i come out, Molly holds out her hand and perched there is a cicada. That was the bug they found.
I cautioned her to be careful because they buzz around quite quickly. However, this one must has just emerged from it's shell as it's wings were still wet and covered in gel so it wasn't going anywhere.
I have never seen one up close before. It was so beautiful.
Thankfully, we had film and were able to take some photos. We couldn't use the digital as it is in Romania with my 18 yod so until I can post our pictures, here is a image I found online.
I told them to go check outside because if there is one, there will be many more. This guy must have been a late starter because all they found were the discarded shells. Noah came in, holding his shirt hem up to form a space and it was full of shells. What a wonderful thing to collect.
Today, I am especially in love with their enthusiasm for the beauty of God's creatures ... even cicadas.

Jul. 30, 2005 - Thanks for posting on my blog!
Thanks for posting on my blog! I will have to check out the book you mentioned. It sounds delicious!
Your little boy, Noah, sounds adorable. I have a Noah, too, and he is 14 now and LOVES bugs, frogs, you name it -- he loves it. I never, ever get tired of little boys learning new things about the world our wonderful creator created! I can't wait to see your picture of the cicada! When I was a little girl growing up in Kansas, we called them "eer-rahs" because of the sound they make. :-) I still get nostalgic when I hear them in the evenings. It reminds me of evenings on my grandma's porch -- total bliss.

That is so cool. I used to love to collect cicada shells when I was younger, but (don't tell anyone) I especially like chasing my little sister with them. :-) I know, bad sister!!
