Book Dedication...

Posted in Book List and Reviews

"The Four Days" by Big Adam is dedicated to several people, one of which happens to be my eldest daughter Kimberly. She is also mentioned in the book as a 'true friend'.

"Tater,
I have something to tell you..."

Thus begins "The Four Days," the sequel to Big Adam's previous novel "My Friend Tater" and chronicles the personal holocaustic suffering he endured in the days following the death of the man he called 'Dad', his grandfather.

Adam has just returned to Faulkner University in Alabama following the funeral for his grandfather back home in North Carolina. Soon after his family drops him off, Adam descends into a perilous nightmare filled with pain, grief, and torture. His vivid and heartfelt memories of Grandpa clash with the misery of waking up each day for the rest of his life knowing Grandpa is gone. His friend Tater comes to his side and through Adam's tears of loss and grief, he sees that something else happened to Adam while he was at home, something so cruel and vicious it drives Adam near the point of madness.

Owl Babies

Waddell, Martin

Three little owls wake up one night to find that Owl Mother has gone. They experience the very real stages of anxiety that any little children might go through on finding they are left alone. As in many picture books the fears and anxieties of the child is explored through animals, in this case the owlets, Sarah, Percy and Bill. One can’t help but smile at the little owls when mother asks what all the fuss is about on her return. Safe in their mother’s presence they each declare "I knew it", when mother says "You knew I’d come back."

This is one of Kaylee's favorite books. Every few days she requests that we read it and then she insists that we visit the owls at the museum.

When we visit the museum, Kaylee always leaves with a new collection of stray owl  feathers.

Things to do:

Bird Math - Get pictures of a birds and make a nest for each. Write a different number on each bird. Let the kids place the correct number of eggs (corresponding numbers) into the birds' nest.
________________________________
Make Your Own Bird Nest
Provide children with mud, sticks, grass, leaves, twigs, pine needles, and pebbles. Let them create their own bird nest.

If Jesus Came to my House

Posted in Book List and Reviews

This week our lesson will center around the book "If Jesus Came To My House" by Joan Gale Thomas

A little boy imagines what it would be like if Jesus came to spend the afternoon with him -- the little boy Jesus, of course, "about the age that I am and about the size of me."

It is easy to see why this friendly little book, originally published in England, has already sold 19 editions. It offers the Golden Rule in concepts easily grasped by small children and indirectly suggests some ways to carry them out.

"I still can share with Jesus
the nicest of my toys
by lending them or giving them
to poorer girls and boys.

And though He may not visit me
as I have wished He would,
yet even so He'll bless my house
if I am kind and good."

Our lesson will consist of:
Bible Reading Hebrews 13:2a
- Do not forget to entertain strangers
Science: Shadows - make shadows and observe shadows throughout the day. Look for shadows in books.
Read: "If Jesus Came To My House"
Imagination: The boy in the story liked to hide behind the stairs and pretend to be a mouse. Pretend to be a mouse; cat; dog; car; airplane; etc..
Poetry: Read "My Shadow" by Robert Louis Stevenson
Hospitality: Invite someone over and share with them (this can be pretend)
Dicussion: Fear - The little boy in the story was afraid. Fear is normal. Discuss what makes us scared and how we can handle it.
Bible Reading:
Isaiah 41:10 - So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
Sign Language: Jesus, play, happy, fear, house

Devotions and Bible Studies

Posted in Book List and Reviews

It was a challenge to find a Bible study suitable for a two year old. I wanted something that held to God's truths and would hold the interest of a toddler. It seemed that most books were geared toward an older audience, but with a little patience and a lot of prayer, the books I needed eventually surfaced.

*My Favorite BIBLE Storybook for Toddlers - ISBN 1-40370-093-1
This is a board book with short, simple bible truths on each page. Following each story is a list of thought provoking questions and activities. The pages are colorful and have hidden flaps with a Bible verse underneath. Kaylee requests this Bible everyday.

*Play and Learn BIBLE - ISBN 0-7847-1597-1
This book is actually designed for 4-5 years olds but I found it to a great learning tool  for toddlers. The Bible stories are interactive, thus holding the attention of even the busiest toddler.

*Devotions for Preschoolers - ISBN 0-8423-8940-7
This is a daily devotion book with short devotions for preschoolers. At the end of each devotion is a Bible verse and a prayer. This is my favorite devotion book because of the moral value of each lessons.

*More Five-Minute Devotions for Children - ISBN 0-8249-5502-1
This book tells about different animals and their unusal traits and how we can apply lessons from these animals to our life. Topics such as sharing, encouragement, and cooperation are introduced. Kaylee loves this book because she loves animals so she is able to relate to and retain the information.

I am a mother to three grown daughters who all graduated from homeschool. I baby-sit my two granddaughters and use "Before Five in a Row" with them. My grandsons are also staying here while their dad is deployed. My mother thinks I should get a "job" but watching the grandchildren grow is the most rewarding job in the world. Come along as we explore God's world together.

Grand-Kids

Ryan is the oldest of my grandchildren. He is 4 years old and is my Tom Sawyer. He's the quietest one of the bunch but if he's not careful, he can be swayed by Huckelberry Finn. He enjoys being outside and getting dirty.

Kaylee is 4 years old. She is a cross between Ellie Mae Clampett and a Disney Princess. She loves animals and all that is involved with their care but she also likes girly activities. She enjoys learning new things and is always eager for "school".

Rowley is a typical little boy. He is 3 years old and is my little Huckleberry Finn. He's the adventurous one and has to be watched every minute of the day because you never know what he might be up to.

Karsyn turned 2 year old on September 16. She is also an adventurous child. She enjoys cuddling as long as it doesnt take up too much time because she has a want/need to be on the move.
