Our Everyday Life

• Mar. 17, 2007 - Some pictures of a 'cob' house

Posted in Architecture
I have been really busy lately. I went to St. Paisius Monastery in Safford, AZ for the first week of Great Lent. It was WONDERFUL. We might send our oldest daughter there for their homeschool/boarding program. She really wants to go, and it might really help her spiritual formation.

We have started building our first earthbag structure. It is an 11 ft. dome and will serve as a camping quarters. I hope to take and post pictures as soon as I am able.

Meanwhile, I have found some pictures of the interior of a cob house. It has some ideas that I think would be worthwhile incorporating in our own structures:

After looking at these pictures, I can see the advantage of lime plaster over cob. The cob, honestly, looks messy and like it falls apart. Lime plaster is very hard, water insoluable and should be much more durable and more like conventional interior commercial plaster. I definitely want to go the lime plaster route. But I like the idea of built-in shelves, and the hand-built door.
