TV Fast?

I am considering a TV Fast for the kids and myself for 30 days.

Has anyone done this?  What did you get out of it and how long was yours?

We have very strict time policies for computer/video game use but I have never really enforced them on the TV.  It isn't that the kids and I just sit there all day or anything but it seems to be background noise a lot.

Curious on your experience...

Every time my dh deploys, I turn off the cable while he is gone. I haven't done it in several years, but with dh getting ready to leave in a couple of weeks, I have already decided I am going to do it again. In the past, it usually takes the kids about 2 weeks to adjust to not being able to watch whatever they want. After that, they don't miss it much. They still have the ability to watch dvds, and really, they just find other things to do! It's great! Good luck! I bet you'll see you really don't miss it much at all!

We went without T.V. for six months. I loved it! It did take us several days to get used to the idea that there was no longer a box to turn on to fill that five minutes or more of time. We didn't even watch movies during those six months.

We read more, played games more, just sat and stared at the walls more. Nothing wrong with just sitting. That's when you think about what you've read and heard!

Dear Man felt like he was in the dark ages. He said he felt like he was unconnected with what was going on in the world, even though I got my news off the internet, it just wasn't enough for him. (Maybe he's a visual/auditory learner?)When we moved to a new house, I walked in and there was a brand new t.v. already hooked up to satellite.

We keep the t.v. off during the day and when Dear Man comes home he's the one that usually turns it on. However, everyone is drawn to it like flys to honey. I am grateful that my husband does watch how to shows and not mindless twaddle.

Still, now that the t.v. is back my children do ask if they can watch a movie, incessantly, and ask if some show can be recorded, and if they can stay up late to watch some other show. The commercials make me blush, and my children holler, "MUTE! MUTE!" (With the t.v. around there are times I wish they were mute!) Once muted all eyes fall to the floor or the book in the lap. That t.v. sound is mesmerizing! I feel like we're all praying to the t.v. every ten minutes.

I refuse to allow cartoons, or the usual shows geared for worldly children to be turned on. Dear Man has no problem with that. As I said, they are how to shows mainly, documentaries, and we did watch the Deadliest Catch series. On Sat. I watch three british comedies on PBS. However I don't record them if I'm going to be gone!

Go for it! Get rid of it! I don't think you'll be sorry you did.

Jun. 27, 2006 - Does it really have to be a big deal?

Around our house, we hardly ever watch TV. We only have one in the house and we really would rather spend time as a family instead. When we finished homeschooling for the year, I thought I might hear, "Mom, can I watch TV?" anytime one of my children was bored. It didn't happen; they weren't bored. They went to Arts Camp and took swim lessons. We go to the library once a week. Some days they have been exhausted and I have let them watch a video.

My sons and their dad are addicted to reading old Spiderman comics. This gives me a lot of free evening time.

Gameboys and computer seem to be a much more addicting problem for my sons. We do have to limit that time and I always tell them that I have no problem taking it away for a week. (I hate the addiction aspect and the isolation of that type of game.)

My parents completely removed our television from the house during the school year when I was growing up and since we went to a year round school and weren't always in the same "quad", this meant at times we would go 9-10 months with no TV. I didn't like it much when I was young because I couldn't join any conversations about popular shows, but I'm soooo grateful for it now. I had so much more time to read and to play outside with friends and later played tons of sports. I just wish I could do the same with my children. Unfortumately my husband grew up in front of the TV and at the movie theater so we compromise. The TV is never on during the day unless it's educational, something I've recorded from the History Channel or something, and my husband is selective of the shows on while the kids are awake.
