Love... part one
Love. Four letters that have changed from a simple word to an emotion, a feeling, a way of describing the connections we have with our surroundings. I love chocolate... I love Rascal Flatts... I love my mom... I love you...
Red paper hearts, red roses, diamonds...
Kind words, birthday presents, surprises...
God’s Son sent to earth...
In some cases, love has been changed from its original purpose to a cheap way to express our perspective. You don’t really love chocolate, or Rascal Flatts... you can love people… you can love God. Unfortunately, this makes it hard to really say “I love you”, because who wants to be on the same level as... say... chocolate?
People have different motives to love. Some people “love” for material gain. These people want friends with lots of money, or “cool” stuff. Not only is this love superficial, it is counterfeit. Pressure can also be a factor in love. I know of many girls, even in 4th and 5th grade that just have to have a “boyfriend” right now, because they’re being pressured by their peers into believing that it’s important. If you’re looking for security, love is also a place you could be tempted to find that. When you’re loved, you feel important, you feel special, you feel precious. If, however, the love is placed in the wrong person, if that person doesn’t care for you, the security level drops drastically. You might end up feeling less secure than when you started.
Love is deeply rooted in Christianity. God Himself sent his only son to save us because he “So loved” us. You can’t get any better than that, right? I personally give three definitions for love. There’s vertical love, horizontal love, and self love.
Self love is a worldly, selfish love. The only thing you will gather from self love is pride and greed, and eventually loneliness. Vertical love is what our nature subconsciously desires. We have a connection to the Creator that we don’t have with anything else. God is love. God created love. He is the Source of unconditional, eternal love. Horizontal love is the “love thy neighbor” love.
In the next few entries, I’ll be describing each of those three “loves” in detail. Right now, I’m in the car on the way home from my grandparents’ house. I’m in the middle of nowhere, somewhere beyond the ends of the earth more likely. Haha, sounds depressing when I think of it like that, but it’s given me lots of time to really delve into the Word to discover what real love is. Some things I expected to find, I didn’t, but there were things I hadn’t thought about that I discovered to be true. It’s been wonderful. I guess I just need to get away from everything for a while. I’d love for you to do the same thing through this series. Don’t just take my word for things and trust me for it. Look it up for yourself. I’ll be sharing plenty of scriptures along the way for your own studying purposes.
1 John 4:19 (NASB) “We love, because He first loved us.”
