Aug. 2, 2008 - 10 common mistakes of new homeschoolers

Common Mistakes Made by New Homeschoolers

The following list contains some of the more common mistakes that are often made by families new to homeschooling. These items are in random order and are by no means all of the mistakes that could be made, nor is the existence of this list a guarantee that all new homeschoolers will make these mistakes. In an effort to help families avoid these errors, I have included links to other articles containing further help, encouragement, or explanations.

1. Doubting their ability to teach their own children

2. A. Attempting to copy the schedule, curriculum, or lifestyle of another homeschooling family
B. Attempting to copy public school classroom models for time schedules, room arrangements, or teaching methods

3. Being overly strict with schoolwork, teaching methods, and discipline, thinking that is how to avoid homeschooling failure

4. A. Leaving the house too often, due to over-involvement
B. Not leaving the house enough, due to fear or due to a too-intensive load of schoolwork

5. Trying to do too much -- too many subjects, too many activities, or too many projects

6. Viewing the household chores as Mom's Work, instead of as a team activity that benefits everyone

7. Assuming that what they may have heard about homeschooling is true, without checking into the facts: legal accountability requirements, time or financial commitment, or curriculum availability

8. Giving too much information on official documents

9. Refusing to try alternate methods or materials, even when something is not working well, feeling that changing methods will bring inconsistency

10. Giving up too quickly, instead of allowing themselves time to adapt to this totally new lifestyle (the second year is much easier than Year #1)

Once again, beginning to homeschool your children does not mean that you will make any or all of the above mistakes, especially if you attempt to tailor the academics to your children's interests and fit the educational experiences into your family's lifestyle (instead of the other way around). Guilt-Free Homeschooling is based in the homeschooling method which is comfortable for you and keeps you relaxed (not tense and stressful). Guilt-Free Homeschooling fits your family's lifestyle -- and there can be few mistakes in that.

For more encouragement, browse through the Titles Index for intriguing articles, or check out the category listings in the Topical Index for help with a specific problem you may be enduring.

Momma's Guide to Growing Your Groceries ($7.97 value!)

by Kimberly Eddy

One of the best ways to save extra money on the grocery bill is to grow your own groceries, but getting started with a garden can be challenging and intimidating. If it's not done properly, a garden can potentially cost you more than you actually save. The majority of the gardening books on the market today do not focus on gardening specifically to save money, and therefore contain many costly suggestions. And, most gardening books were not written for busy mothers with young children either.

That's where this new ebook, Momma's Guide to Growing Your Groceries comes in! Over the last several years, Kimberly Eddy has been canning an average of 500 jars per year, and dehydrating, freezing, and eating fresh vegetables and fruits that she and her family have grown in their own backyard at their lovely Michigan villa. Kimberly has five young children who help her out in this venture and in this eBook she shares with you many helpful tips and tricks she has learned over the past few years to help you to also grow your own groceries and lower your food bill.

69 pages with illustrations. Instantly downloadable ebook.

Jul. 14, 2008 - Test Preparation & Vocabulary Building Made Fun

This looks like a very cool site. I played with some of the games. Very entertaining as well as educational.

Learn English Vocabulary

Vocabulary.co.il is a great vocabulary builder.  This educational website is a great way to learn English.

Vocabulary.co.il games help expand your English vocabulary, whether you are interested in improving your English for school, business, or personal reasons.

Not everyone is able to learn English through the immersion method, by moving to an English speaking country and only hearing and speaking English until they are fluent.

Many people learn English through a blend of methods -- by taking English classes, reading books and watching movies in English, and studying English with English language software. Playing word and vocabulary games can be a valuable part of learning English.

Vocabulary.co.il is a fun site dedicated to helping you build reading, phonics, or English language skills. We offer Free Online Word Games which are specifically designed to build language skills and motivate people to learn through fun practice in spelling, phonics, and vocabulary.

If you are applying to American universities, you will probably have to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL test. Most American colleges, as well as schools in England, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand require all non-native English speakers to take the TOEFL exam, and a high score can be critical to admission. Vocabulary.co.il can also help build vocabulary skills for other high-stakes, vocabulary-rich exams such as the GRE, the SAT, and PSAT.

Learning Vocabulary by Category

Vocabulary.co.il's vocabulary games are separated into hundreds of categories.   By making connections between words and ideas, and between words and pictures, we gain vocabulary. Connections make the learning process faster and more efficient. This grouping of knowledge by topic is the cornerstone of the vocabulary.co.il learning website.

Try Word Games For Test Preparation

Crosswords -- With 50 categories and a print option, our hi-tech Crossword Puzzle offers two levels of play, floating clues, hints, and a lot of fun. Crosswords build skills in vocabulary, reasoning, spelling, word attack and differentiating between similar terms.

Word Search -- Our version of the classic word search puzzle, which can be played online or printed out, includes hundreds of categories, a variety of difficulty levels, and a timer option. Searching for words hidden in a grid of letters requires careful attention to correct spelling, and improves eye tracking.

The Vocabulary Quiz -- Educators know that using sentence context to determine the meaning of a word is one of the most effective ways of expanding your vocabulary.  Our multiple choice Vocabulary Quiz offers 16 topics and over 1600 questions, plus options including skill level, time length, and number of questions.

Match Game -- Making the word-picture connection is the earliest step of beginning reading. Like the classic game of Concentration, Match Game builds visual memory skills by clicking and flipping cards to match pairs. Students can also click on the word card to hear it pronounced.

Word Scramble -- Choose a word from over 100 topics, select from three levels of difficulty and unscramble words to build skills in spelling, phoneme recognition, and vocabulary.

HangMouse -- Our version of Hang Man offers a fun way to build spelling, logic and decoding skills. It includes over 200 topics and 10,000 words, and can be played at a variety of levels. Guess the letters in the word, but don’t wake up the sleeping cat!

Jul. 13, 2008 - The Earth Bowl

I have not tried this but thought it would be fun for the younger children. If you try it please leave a comment or a picture.

Thank you.

The Earth Bowl

Grade Level: K - 3
Scientists know that the earth is made of four layers: the inner
core, outer core, mantle, and crust. See "Ideas for Discussion," #1.
The Earth Bowl is a three dimensional, edible representation of the
earth in cross section. (If time allows, have children participate
in measuring the ingredients and constructing the Bowl.)

Materials:
4 oz. pkg. raspberry gelatine dessert
4 oz. pkg. instant vanilla pudding
8 oz. pkg. black cherry gelatine dessert
4 cups boiling water (can be boiled and kept hot in thermos)
4 cups cold water
3 mixing bowls
12 graham crackers
1/2 cup melted margarine
1/4 cup granulated sugar
10" diameter clear glass bowl
(Small paper cups and spoons for after discussion)

Procedure:
Make the gelatine desserts in separate bowls and according to the
directions on the side of the box. Put in refrigerator to set.

Have the children crush the graham crackers into fine crumbs. This
can be done by putting the crackers in a zip-lock bag and having the
children pound the bag until the crackers are in very fine crumbs.

Mix the graham cracker crumbs with the melted margarine and
granulated sugar. Press the mixture on the bottom and along the
sides of the glass bowl to form a crust. Set aside.

After two hours the gelatine will set. Spoon the black cherry into
the graham cracker crust. Form it so that there is about a five inch
pocket in the middle.

Next, spoon in the lemon gelatine, leaving a two inch hole. Into
this centre, spoon the raspberry gelatine.

Allow time for each child to take a look at the Earth Bowl and
discuss its layers. Then dig in!
Important Concepts:
(1) In the Earth Bowl the graham cracker crust represents the
earth's crust which is about 20 miles deep; the black cherry is the
mantle (4,000 miles deep); the lemon gelatine is the outer core
(2,200 miles deep); and the raspberry gelatine is the inner core
(800 miles deep).
(2) Although the Earth Bowl is made of cool gelatine, the centre of
the earth is actually extremely hot.
