Grandma Karen gave Harper a coin collector's map when we visited her this week.  She had been collecting the coins since the coins were issued in 1999.

Since 1999, five coins have been issued every year.  After this year, all the state coins will be in circulation.

Harper has been studying this map, and plans to collect the missing coins.  It's been a fun way to study geography, and the art on the coins tells us a bit about each state.

We are in search of the following coins:

  • Alabama
  • Oklahoma
  • Montana
  • Utah
  • Arizona
  • Oregon
  • Hawaii
  • Alaska

We can learn more about collecting coins at The United States Mint!

I love the map. I started collecting these using a book when they first started coming out. It wasn't until after the first year I noticed my book only had slots through 2003, although they did have slots for both the Denver mint and the Philadelphia mint. That one is mostly complete except for some of the states are missing one of the mints. So I started another book and that one is up to date except for 2008 and West Virginia (from 2005). My mom was given another book that is an advertisement from Bob Walter of the Bankers Advertising Co in Frankfort, KY, so I started that one too, but I am missing 6 states plus all of 2008, for a total of 11. If I can complete one collection I may look to sell the rest of my coins on ebay or something, but I would love to have a map like that, so I might end up in a wash trying to find one, huh? I love the idea of using these coins to teach geography and history.

We just came up with this idea a couple of months ago! I think we are only 4 coins shy of complete! We still have to get a map, but we know of a coin guy at our local flea market. The kids LOVE money, so I thought this would be a good motivator. I hope you guys complete your map soon! Have fun!

About Us

Hi, and welcome to our blog! We're creating a love of learning with two creative, fun-loving boys. We use an eclectic approach to learning with Sonlight curriculum, Charlotte Mason ideals, and whatever else works for us along the way. The purpose of our blog is keep friends and family updated on our family-happenings, as well as give others a peek into our approach to learning. I also use it as a source of record-keeping, and a place to keep track of my random thoughts. If you have a moment, please leave us a comment. We love to know who's reading the blog.
