Sophia, Olivia, and I had fun working on our zoo lapbooks today. We visited the Minnesota Zoo way back in January, and are now finally getting the books together. Each daughter has her own lapbook (two file folders glued together so they open into a three-section display):
Front Cover
- Photo collage on the front cover of trying on costumes, pretending to be a zoo veterinarian, and looking at the fish in the aquarium.
Inside Pocket 1
- Mini-book about making an at-home zoo (The Timbertoes story from Highlights magazine).
- Dolphin booklet written by Sophia with two pictures of a dolphin skull.
- ABCs by the Sea booklet (matching letters with pictures - phonics activity).
Pocket 2
- Colored picture of a tiger (talked about camouflage).
- Outline of a tiger cut out of black construction paper and then cut into strips. Glued onto orange paper.
- Pictures drawn of fish at the Minnesota Zoo.
Pocket 3
- Mini-book written by Sophia about star fish with pictures of her looking at and touching a star fish at the Minnesota Zoo.
- Coloring and fact page about komodo dragons.
- Graphing worksheet using sealife as the subject matter.
- Solid shape worksheet using an octopus and treasure box as the subject matter.
- Math problems using a picture of zoo animals.
- Animal riddles.
- Fill-in form comparing animal families with our family.
- Community Services worksheet (from the Minnesota Zoo). Matches services in nature with services provided within our community (e.g., "monkeys groom each other" is paired with "beauty parlor").
- List of books that we did and can read regarding zoos, animals, and nature.
Pocket 4
Two games provided by the Minnesota Zoo as part of the educational materials available via the internet:
- Animal Cover-Ups Card Game.
- Animal Cover-Up (an information and identification activity at the zoo).
Back Cover
- Collage of different photographs of animals that we saw at the zoo plus pictures from the Minnesota Zoo's brochures. |
