Jul. 22, 2008 -

Well, as some of you know, last week my family drove up to Colorado.
We left on Uhmmmm, last-Monday-I think. We got to where my grandfather lives around 5:00 Pm, went out to eat, then all of my brothers and me, went home to our grandfathers house, when we got there it was still light. After un loading everything, I went and grabbed my new pellet gun. (See, they have a problem with Voles (a type of rat) and my grand parents and they’re neighbors Love for us to shoot them) After about 5minutes I saw what I was looking for- A huge fat rat crossing the side walk in they’re garden. And, I immediately shot it, first shot hitting it to far back, so it took another. After removing the pest, my brothers and I continued searching out side of they’re yard, near a dry creek bead. (30yrds away from they’re house) which was where they were coming from. I shot 3more before it was dark, all of which only took one shot.

This is what they look like.
That night we watched a movie until 11ish, then went to bed. Didn’t sleep a bit. So I got up at 06, grabbed my pellet gun and went out to shoot more rats. Before my brothers we even up I had shot 3 more. And then my brother Sam got up and we went and shot 3 more between the two of us. On shot I made was at about 40yrds, shooting off handed. It was really cool, because we say the rat way off, and I was using my brothers shoulder to steady the rifle, but before I could get a shot a bunch of quail can tromping right behind the rat, and I knew they would scare the rat away, so a quickly took a step away from my brother and shot the rat. It took a second or two for the round to reach the rat and when it did it just rolled of the trail and the little quail, passed safely by. Before 11, I had shot 12rats and my brother had shot 3.
Then, when I had come back form rat hunting, still gun in hand. I was looking around a lumber pile next to the house, when I saw the back of a snake, and stood still for a second, I had just barely set my foot down when it sprung up, scaring me half to death!
Then he struck at me as I jumped back. After that he stood there Just like this
only, he stood higher then my knee and he struck at me. My older brother heard him rattling and came over when he saw I said, "should I shoot i?" and he said he said  said “SHOOT IT!!!!” so I did. It took a few shots actually. But we got him.

We skinned it and saved the pelt.

Here it is it is. it was about 4.5 ft long. (This picture is mine, the other too are not)
Well, that’s all that was "exciting"
We worked on our house, caught guarder snakes, attended our grandmothers 70th birth day party, and drove hours and hours, and on and on.

(About getting pictures, for my last post. Sorry, I haven't seen my neighbors since, but I'll ask them to e-mail me them when I do see them)

Until then.

Wow. those are some pretty ugly rats!!
And the snake! Wow, now me(being a GIRL) Probably would have screamed like no tomorrow and either ran, or just stood there and probably died!! lol
Cool pix. My Little brother went out to do the chores the other day and a snake about 4-5ft long came slithering out between the geese and chicken coupe! We tried shooting it , but it got away. =[
Well, I'm Mandie! Nice blog!

The only snakes we have around our place are rat snakes, a black kingsnake or two, ring-necked wormsnakes (I found one when I was weeding my fower garden a couple of weeks ago. I caught it and gave it to Will and Nate.), and the odd copperhead (Drew has skinned most of those that we have found). But we mostly have ratsnakes.

I'm a bit disappointed that you had to be TOLD to shoot that rattler. I mean, a person would think that you would say to yourself, "Cool! Big poisoness snake! And I've got a gun in my hand!! I'd better shoot it!!" At least that's what would have been going through my head. (except for the "Cool!" part)
I guess you can turn a little less manly when you don't hang around us North Carolinians enough. :-) :-)

Hannah,
it sounds like you’re saying you would just freak out and kill and with out a thought killed it. That’s OK, and all. But, I’ve been to my grandfathers house many times, and nearly every time I’ve been struck at by a rattle snake. And what has kept me from shooting the snakes all those other times was the fact that in many “Western States”, it is sorta, kinda, a lil’ bit, Illegal! to kill one out of season. And, my goal is to eliminate nasty rats. And, it just so happens, that Rattle snakes are some of the best rat traps created. See Hannah, seeing a rattler was no surprise other than the initial startle of it striking at you and standing up. The size of the snake was quite impressive, and if it were out in the field away from the house we probably would have let it live like all the others. We usually throw pebbles at them or put them in a bucket LOL.

Unfortunately I can’t say that you think less when you hang out with you “North Carolinians” enough; because that’s just not fair to Old NC.

Hey, thanks for stopping by!
Lol, yeah, I only tried to try one once, and lost my Hype when the time came!! lol
Really? Awesome! Likely isn't it? They scamper away before you can get them! We haven't seen anymore...alive, in our yard, just on the road(we live WAY out in the Boony's).

Ok, I will!!

I thought I would post a comment. =D lol

That whole rattle snake thing sounds like fun!
I remember when I lived in Arizona I was little and we had a baby rattler in our back yard.
My older brother was fascinated! lol

They are cool animals.
Well I should go now but I'll talk to you later.

Yeah, I know, but I still think it's kinda gross! Though it's not cause I'm a girl, cause I helped my dad skin a deer and I was fine with it, lol. I don't know. I'm weird, I guess. :p Or maybe because I think rattlers are cool and I'm sad you had to kill it. Lol.

sounds like fun! I've never been rat hunting before, but it seems like you had a good time!
I'm not really afraid of snakes, but if I had saw that rattlesnake I would of been so freaked out! I mean, I catch gardener snakes in the garden, but never a poisonous snake!
