one more for tonight
|
Now that I have figured this out, I'm going to keep going.
My mother-in-law is a homeschooling mother, she's one of the eleven oreos. I recently had the pleasure of homeschooling my girls with her kids, which was wonderful. I never realized how hard it was to homeschool though. I loved getting to be the one who got help to teach my kids and I loved getting to spend most of my day with her and her family. Shurleen and I are just to peas in a pod.
Until I met Shurleen, I've never known anyone who homeschooled. To be perfectly honest, I never really agreed with the whole idea until maybe a year ago. I always thought that homeschooling was sheltering your kids way to much, keeping them from reality. But after meeting Shurleen and seeing how great she does with her kids, I thought I would give it some more thought. Then I was given a chance to experience it, and I have to say it is wonderful. I only have a couple issues that are keeping me on the fence of whether or not to homeschool my son. Thankfully I have a lot of time.
Emilee and Zoe have to start public school again next week and I have to say, I'm going to miss going to school with Shurleen and her kids.
Even though my girls are going to public school, I still have my son who I am still thinking about homeschooling, so if anyone wants to comment on the pros and cons of homeschooling I would love any information you could give me.

I do not know of any cons to homeschooling, except maybe for children who were previously in school. They miss their friends. But you can make sure that they still have plenty of time for those friends.
There are so many pros...it would take to long to list them all. Here are just a few:
you will have a closer relationship to each child
your whole family will be closer
they will be better "socialized" (I really do not care for that term, but I have to throw it out there for those who think otherwise.)
a better education, tailored to each individual child
one-on-one time with each child academically
Hope these help you make your final decision.

Hello! my name is Heather...nice to meet you. When I firs theard of homeschooling, I was one that thought just like you-sheltering, that is what the public school is for, etc. that was before I met my hubby...well, actually, his mother told me and was instrumental in convincing me that homeschooling is the best. ..and now i am married to her son and won't even ever consider sending my children away to school! I am so looking forward to homeschooling...(my oldest is only 3 :))
Anyway, I really enjoy reading your MIl's blog...she is a funny, down-to-earth, truthful lady. I admire her transparency and honesty...you have a neat family.

Mar. 29, 2006 - second generation Home schooler

Welcome to the world of blogging. I have enjoyed reading your mother-in-law's blog, and look forward to yours as well. As a second generation home schooler, I can say the pros far, far, far outway any cons there may be. I was (and am) better prepared for life (I got real life experience, not isolated classroom experience), able to obtain what I need (I learned how to learn, not how to pass a test), have fewer regrets than most (that's where the sheltering came in making things like drugs, alcohol, pre-marital sex much less of an issue), and a deeper commitment to my faith than I would have if I had stayed in school. Now that I am a dad, I love being as much a part of homeschooling as I can. It is truly a blessing.
