turn their pretty faces down,
surprised by the snow.

We have put a cute math video on our math page. The video is called The Land of Gallon. We just wanted to share. The video is in the middle of the page. (Forgive the backwards "G"!)

MOM!!!!! MOM!!!!! came the screams from the back door. Then I heard my two youngest running breakneck through the house to find me. "Come quick!! Come quick!! You gotta see this!" My second son and I went out to see what all the fuss was about.
It was a silken nest made by a mass of Eastern tent caterpillars. Apparently they had never seen one before.

"Oh, wow!" I exclaimed, because they really were excited. I felt more like taking the thing down and destroying it. Instead, I took a picture. The caterpillars have built on a wild cherry tree that we are going to be cutting down anyway.
When we got back inside my older son looked at me and said, "Gee. I fully expected to see something like a big family of snakes in the backyard. That was all?"
If you want more information about these, ummm, pests, you can go here:

Tonight I made a soup that turned out really good. I had boiled a whole chicken a couple of days ago. Whever I do this, I always save the broth and some of the chicken for casseroles, soups, etc.
Here's what I put in the soup:
- Several cups of chicken broth
- A cup or two of cooked chicken cut into pieces.
- One can of cream of celery soup.
- One can of cream of chicken soup.
- One can of carrot slices drained.
- A large handful of greens from the garden--torn into pieces.
- A bunch of garlic chives from the garden--cut into pieces.
- One cup of brown rice.
- Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

I let this simmer until the rice was done. Note: I added the greens towards the end of the cooking (about the last 20 minutes) so they would not overcook. I also added water towards the end as my soup seemed a little thick. I am not even sure what kinds of greens I have had growing all winter.
I think it was kale and mustard. Anyway, we could really taste and smell them in the soup!
It was pretty yummy!

I have been watching the ootheca closely, because it has been SO warm. I knew the praying mantises would hatch out soon. Well, I walked by it today and bent down to take a closer look. There were dozens of praying mantises falling from the ootheca. They seemed to be crawling on close-by branches and then just letting go and falling into the grass on the ground.
I ran in and got the digital camera.

In this one, you can see one mantis clearly on the left, and the silouette of one in the background on the right (hanging upsidedown), and the head and front legs of one in the center at bottom.

In the picture above you can see how small they are. Here's one on the tip of a blade of grass.
They were literally going everywhere. I wish I could have gotten more pictures! It was hard to even bring them into focus. They really jump around a lot when they first hatch out!

Yes, that is the name of the egg case in which the baby praying mantises are growing. There is one in our yard right now and hopefully we'll be lucky enough to see the baby mantises when they emerge.

This is the ootheca in our yard. If we are lucky enough to see the babies, I'll post a picture.

Isn't our Guinea pig cute all wrapped up in his towel? We bathe him in barely warm water, very shallow, and rinse him well. Then he sits wrapped in a towel in someone's lap until he is dry enough to go back in his cage.

It may be just deadnettle, but it still made me smile with joy! My little daughter stopped her playing long enough to pick me a deadnettle bouquet from the yard. She brought it to me while I was working on a mosaic project.
"Mom, I know you love pink flowers, and this was the closest I could find right now."

I used my Lowes Foods card today and bought seven boxes of Kellogs cereal. The cereal was on sale for anywhere from 2-something to 3-something a box. They were decent sales. When I checked out and used my Lowes Foods card, the register printed me coupons for THREE FREE gallons of milk. If you shop at Lowes at all, you may want to see if your store is running this special.

Last week I bought a new book for my home library. I opened up to page 1 and was not able to put it down. A couple of hours later I had finished the 179 page book. I cried.
Anyone considering not vaccinating for polio should read
Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio.
It is a true story, written by Peg Kehret, and she cried real-life tears of joy for her own children when a polio vaccination was made available to the public. Her struggles and fears while facing polio will really make one think about not vaccinating a child against this horrible disease.
It's worth the read.
