Eastern Tent Caterpillar

MOM!!!!!   MOM!!!!!  came the screams from the back door.  Then I heard my two youngest running breakneck through the house to find me.  "Come quick!!  Come quick!!  You gotta see this!"  My second son and I went out to see what all the fuss was about.

It was a silken nest made by a mass of Eastern tent caterpillars.  Apparently they had never seen one before.

"Oh, wow!" I exclaimed, because they really were excited.  I felt more like taking the thing down and destroying it.  Instead, I took a picture.  The caterpillars have built on a wild cherry tree that we are going to be cutting down anyway.

When we got back inside my older son looked at me and said, "Gee.  I fully expected to see something like a big family of snakes in the backyard.  That was all?"
