Wanderings Along the Way

I spent May changing up the way I work out.  I heard tell that you should do a 5 minute warm up then do your weight or circuit training.  Then follow that up with cardio so that by the time you get to it you are completely in fat-burning mode.  Sounded good to me!

I really did see some improvement in my workout and I plan to keep with that for awhile.  I am on a month-to-month at my Curves-like gym and I want to see if that will get the scales moving before I consider going to a complete gym like Golds.  I am so tempted to go back to regular weight training to get the really great results I saw in the past.  But this place is SO close to my house and I love the women I work out with.  So my plan is to stay here for June since I will be gone for part of that time.

Well....that was the plan.

I got a terrible case of strep throat on Memorial Day weekend.  Which irritated my asthma.  Normally I don't have any asthma problems, except when I have some sort of respiratory problem like a cold or such.  But this time, it took me down.  It put me in the hospital last weekend.  I had round-the-clock meds and they let me out when I showed some improvement.  But I eneded up at the doc's office yesterday in distress again.  But I guess they gave me some sort of wonder steriod shot and by the time I was in the car I could breathe again!  I am so much better today!  Wooo Hooo

So for the time being, excercise is out until I go back in for a full battery of breathing tests and such at the end of the month.  And just to make things worse, the steroids cause temporary weight gain.  I was up 8 pounds at the doctor's office.  Eight pounds in one week!!!!   They told me not to worry about it.  Like that would work!  LOL  I will get over it and just try to keep to my healthy picks and move on past this month.

I have to remember that I am on a life-long journey and sometimes we get stuck in detours and traffic jams.  This is just one I will have to weight out!  LOL

I am an athlete??

My husband says I am an athlete.  I think he is being generous.  But I am in training for the road race, so maybe I am.

So I guess it is only fair that I start to feel like an athelete.  As in aches and pains!  This morning while running (yes, I said running) I got a cramp in my rear.  And then down the back of my leg into my knee.  Sciatic nerve!  ACK!  I had to stop and stretch.  It didn't really stop hurting but I finished my miles walking much more slowly.

So I guess tomorrow I take a couple of Advil and go on.  I am an athlete.

Tennis Anyone?

After dinner we went out to the tennis courts to practice and play a little.  My oldest son is playing tomorrow night and he likes to get in all the practice he can with Dad.  Even though I had already worked out this morning and showered for the day, I put on my tennis shoes and joined them.  It is a lot of fun and I am actually getting better.  I also noticed that I wasn't as worn out as I used to be.

But I think the biggest change in me that I am seeing (and feeling!) is how much I am actually starting to enjoy exercise!  It feels good to move.  It feels good to get a muscle spasm!  Ok...that is taking it a bit too far, but I would rather hurt because I got moving than from sitting too long in one spot!

Walking Plan Update

Today I started on the 3rd stage of my training schedule for the Peachtree Road Race.

I decided that this year I was going to run/walk the Peacthree.  For sure this time!  I mean really, I am going to send in the application.  I mean it.
And I actually did!

My husband is the active, athletic kind of guy who can run it with no training each year.  His idea of training is to put on his running shoes.  I'm serious!   I told him he has to stay with me the entire time.  This time it is all about me!  The plan is to complete the 10k in 90 minutes or less.  That is an average of 4 miles an hour.  So I found an 12 week training plan and I got started.  I had already been walking for two months, so at least it wasn't that difficult to get going.

Weeks 1 & 2 - Walk briskly for 30 minutes. 7 days a week.
Weeks 3 & 4 - Walk briskly 6 days a week.  Go for 45 minutes on 3 days and 30 minutes on the remaining 3 days

Today I started week 5.

Weeks 5 & 6 - Walk for 45 minutes 3 days a week.  Two days a week, do a 5-minute walking warm-up, then 45 minutes of intervals: 3 minutes of walking and 1 minute of running.  Rest 2 days out of the week.

It wasn't too bad!  I can do anything for a minute right?  Actually it was a little more fun than just walking.  But my knees are feeling the effects tonight.  Too much weight pounding down on those poor babies!  But tomorrow is just walking so they get a little break.

I think I can.  I think I can.

Entry from April 3 - My Enemy - The Scale

In spite of my best efforts, the darn scale just isn't moving. Now my brain knows that since I have beefed up my workouts and added weight training that I am gaining muscle and losing fat. Sometimes that works out to be a draw in the scales department. And I have put three pairs of pants in the too big to wear anymore pile. And when I put on my shorts for the first time last year, I found them too big. And my 8 yo son said, "Mommy, your butt is smaller."

But, the darn scale hasn't moved this month. And somehow I allow that to mess with my brain. But in truth I do know that I have been slacking up with my healthy picks in the last few weeks as well.

Therefore, I make a commitment to myself to journal my food everyday for the month of April. This commitment should pay off by making that darn scale quit laughing at me!!

A New Beginning

Although I started this journey in January, I am just now starting my blog.  I want to have a visual record for myself of this journey.  I will try to record some of the events and my thoughts of the last three months as I add new entries.
