Aug. 29, 2006 - Pickles and Waffles

Yet another wild tale of my pregnant mommy cravings...

My watch read 12:30 PM as I pushed my shopping cart through the Wal-Mart aisles, just as quickly as I possibly could.  Unfortunately, that wasn't very fast considering I was doing my best to avoid preoccupied little children and slow, yet sweet elderly women who kept stopping in the very middle of the aisles in front of me.  Each time it happend I smiled sweetly and uttered an "Oh, I'm sorry - excuse me," as I politely manuvered around them, telling myself there was no need to grow impatient.  However, I could feel my stomach growling and churning with hunger, and our little baby boy was squirming around quite a bit inside me...no doubt as hungry as I.  With each pain of hunger, I could feel my nerves slipping a little bit more.
As I tried desperately to hurry and finish picking up the last few items on my grocery list, my mind was racing with succulent visions of what I might eat for lunch just as soon I could get home.

I don't usually shop for groceries when I'm hungry, but I thought I could make a fast run since I had just finished my first class of the semester over at the college, and Wal-Mart was just a hop-skip and a jump away.  But alas, my quick little shopping excursion had been plagued with many tiny little obstacles at every turn, and time just didn't seem to be going in my favor.

With each passing minute I grew more and more desperate with hunger.  For once I had actually forgotten to bring a package of my precious peanut butter crackers with me in my purse, but had left them in the car.  "Just finish with your groceries and then you can make it back to the car," I told myself.  "You can eat your crackers there, and then you'll be able to go home and eat a real lunch."

With that reassuring thought in my mind, I picked up my pace a little as I went down the last couple of aisles.  I was on my way to grab something else when I walked by the pickles display.  There were jars and jars of every kind of pickle you could possibly imagine.  My hunger pains took over and I suddenly wanted to eat the largest jar I could find, right then and there!  Without a second thought I grabbed the biggest jar of dill spears I saw and placed it in my shopping cart.  "Ohhh, who cares if they weren't on my list?"  I thought.  I couldn't describe it, but something very deep within my soul told me that I simply needed those dill pickles.

Blowing down the last aisle past the freezers, I saw the frozen breakfast foods section out of the corner of my eye.  Once again, without a second thought, I wheeled my cart around, stopping in front of the shelves of pancakes and waffles.  Ahhh, there they were, for only one measly buck - a package of eight beautiful, mouth-watering, golden blueberry waffles staring up at me.   My eyes drank them in for only a moment, then I flung open the refrigerator door, grabbed them and hurriedly tossed them in my cart.  I could almost taste them as I spun my cart away, thinking to myself, "So, they're not to most healthy thing in the world... Oh well, I'm pregnant afterall - I'm supposed to heed my cravings."

Extremely content with my purchases, and hardly able to stand ripping the pacakages open and start eating them before I even checked out, I managed to make it through the checkout line and back to my car.  I unloaded my groceries and plopped down behind the wheel.  I hungrily devoured my snack crackers and guzzled down an entire bottle of water.  Then, feeling slightly less anxious and starved, I took my mountainous pile of groceries home.

Upon entering our house, my body suddenly felt as if I had been running a marathon.  My legs felt like the Cedars of Lebanon, and my feet were so heavy that it seemed like I was wearing the big honkin' shoes of Paul Bunyan himself.  I stumbled into the kitchen and threw my bags of cold groceries into the refrigerator (*ahem* yes, I'm emarrassed to admit it - bags and all), except, of course, for my beloved pickles and blueberry waffles that I had been dreaming about ever since Wal-Mart.  I tossed a waffle in the toaster, and while I waited, I eagerly proceeded to eat 4 whole dill spears straight from the pickle jar.  I moved right on to my waffles, savoring each bite like it were my last.  Until, finally...ever so slowly... I was no longer hungry.

My cravings were at last, satisfied

Now, all I could think about was sleep.

Sweet, sweet sleep...

My eyelids were drooping lower and lower.

I could feel the delightful voice of sleep itself calling my name as I staggered blindly into the bedroom, completely forgetting my other bags of non-cold groceries sitting neglectedly on the kitchen table.  I barely remember pulling the covers over me and curling up with a pillow clutched between my arms.  My mind was shutting down.  Before I knew it, this little mommy and baby boy had, at long last, slipped into a deep, peaceful sleep...thanks to our good friends, pickles and waffles.

the pickles, but not the blueberry waffles! Don't worry about having to grab a snack at the store! We do all the time with the 6 younger kids! And now mom too. Did you get my comment about my mom expecting? Well she is!
I think that your body knows when the baby is getting his share and maybe he just took more than normal and your body needed those snacks to compensate for it!
Maybe that is what cravings actually are: replenishing your body, because your little one has taken more than normal. I wonder......

Anyway...How are you? Hope you are having a GREAT week! You sure have posted and done alot since I was here last.

Just stopping by to say HEY……so……HEY!!

Stop by "The Daily Planet" soon! Read my lastest post: Water through a Sieve?

LOL Myklin...so funny! Although I've never craved pickles & waffles....I think most of us who have been pregnant before, have had those uncontrollable cravings and it doesn't matter if the food doesn't go together! You're totally giving into the stereotype of pregnant women though....lol...PICKLES?! I wonder what pickles has in it that the pregnant woman craves?

I just found your blog through one of my friends, In Beauty and In Grace. I love the story. You are due with your baby about week before I am. I have 4 children as of right now. My 5th is due in Jan as well.

I have added you to friends (I hope you don't mind.) I have 2 girls and will be following your blog. I am also looking at your website and materials.

Oh, I forgot to mention, we also live in North TX. I am in McKinney.

Thank you for the funny story. I crave things all the time but I am never in a position to indulge. Too many children to make excuses to. :(

God Bless,

Karen

I love to sleep anyway so when I 'm pregnant- oh boy. Especiall y those first couple months. I felt like I had been hit with a mac truck.......
