Nov. 1, 2009 - History Update

Posted in Homeschool

Well we've plugged through Mystery of History and I'll tell you, its not good.   No one is enjoying it. I truly think the material is just over their heads so I'm putting it away for a few years...but now, what to do???   I dug through a box of books (my stash), to see what I had left for history and I came across two gems from Abeka Book Publications that a dear friend had given me that I had completely forgotten about!  They are entitled "Of America, Vol's 1 and  2. " It is a US History study / reading program and it covers famous American citizens, and what it means for us to be citizens of the greatest country ever!   They are all "stories" so I can sit and read them to the kids, there are famous poems in there too, like Paul Revere's Ride.  What I will have them do is draw a picture of every story and compile a notebook of sorts. Also, Emily and Tyler will copy the vocabulary words as well.  I'll keep ya posted on how it all goes.  I'm so excited!

Nov. 1, 2009 - History was always fun...remember this...

Posted by Aunt Cher
Hi Lori,
I like how you are going to do history with the kids. Remember Mr. Duram? History was never as much fun as his classes. It's important to learn about the history of our great country...Way to go!

PS: Love the Halloween pic!

Nov. 2, 2009 - We also did Mystery of History

Posted by Diane Blestx7
I had mixed feelings about it.. MY children liked it to some degree because the lessons were simple and short. But since I have some that can't note book it was bad in that respect.
We did about 9 lessons and then have picked up info from other programs as well. And I probably won't buy the second one in the series. I do think it was above their head.
And we need American History this year. I have yet to find any really neat American History programs.. I want to do study more about American beside wars and space programs... :( I want things like the Orphan Train, and some positive other beginnings... We are kind of winging it through the time line and when we find something interesting we stop and research. I also have allot of Historical Fiction books like Johny Tremains I read aloud. Jonnny Tremains does have a few words in it I had to add lib ... ha ha But over all it was a book my children enjoyed as a read aloud. Keep me posted about your history .... If you come across something you really like tell me about it ! Blestx7
