Henry whistled as he led the poor dejected cow around all of the mud puddles. It was raining full swing now, and he was soaked. He had started to whistle to cheer himself up, but after awhile the happy little tune he had been whistles melted into a sad melancholy one.
Sydon and Thorton sat atop the cows back, and they did not look pleased. They were also soaked and both of them had their ears plastered back.
Henry looked back at them and in the most cheerful voice he could muster said, "Not too long now."
Thorton humphed.
The cow seemed to be the only pleased one of the bunch, it was almost as if she knew she was going to be leaving for good, and was glad of it.
So the dreary party moved along the road, hoping to see the village over the horizon soon, but not really thinking they would ever get there.
Henry bagan to sing a slow little ditty about rain in his head, and after he had finished it, sung it again, only backwards so Sydon and Thorton knew what he was saying.
He had just started singing it again when ahead of him he saw a road leading off to the left.
"I wonder where that road goes to?"
"Looks strange to me." Sydon replied.
As they grew closer Henry really began to get curious, the road went a short distance then went down a hill so you couldn't see where it led to.
"It looks a little eerie to me." Thorton said as they stopped in front of it.
Henry shrugged.
"Let's go see where it goes to."
"I don't think that's a good idea, something's telling me to say no." Sydon growled.
"Oh come on, what could happen? Let's just go to that hill, and then I bet will be able to see where it goes."
"I'd say no, but I know you'll just do it anyway, so it really doesn't matter."
"That's the Spirit!" Henry said excitedly, then trotted off down the road.
Not liking the bouncy ride on the cow the cats jumped off and followed behind.
As Henry reached the top of the hill he stopped and waited for the cats to catch up.
"I didn't know there was a forest around here." He said.
Sydon shook one of his mud covered paws.
"You don't know a lot of things. You've seen what you came to see, can we go back now?"
Henry thought for a moment,
"The road keeps going, it's got to go somewhere."
Thorton laughed.
"Every road goes somewhere Henry, it's just if you've never been on that road before you don't know how far somewhere is, and your mother wants you home by supper time."
"She also wants you to sell a cow today," Sydon added.
Henry shook his head.
" I have a feeling wherever this road leads, it's not far. Come on, those trees will give you shelter from the rain."
Henry looked out over the forest one last time. It was not a big one, he could see where the trees ended on the other side, but it would definitely be classified as a forest.
"Henry I really don't-"
He didn't wait to hear what else Sydon had to say, he ran off down the road, the cow trailing behind him, and hoping the cats would follow.
"Henry, haven't you seen enough? It's just a wood." They had been walking along the road for quite sometime now and Sydon had already had enough.
"This probably just leads to some town miles away from here."
Henry glanced up at the trees towering above him. There were not a lot of trees near where he lived, and the trees that were there were not very big.
The cow was still happily following behind him, stopping every now and then to grab a bite of bush, or tuft of grass, to chew on.
Up ahead Henry could see a bend in the road, and hoping there would be something around it started to run.
Sydon looked at Thorton
"He's going on a wild goose chase, a 'feeling'. We could be walking for days."
"He stopped." Thorton grunted.
Henry had stopped short causing the cow to smack into him from behind.
Up ahead was a girl, who looked to be about Henry's age. She was carrying a basket, and was in the midst of picking a weed. She was wearing a cape with a hood, and even though the hood was pulled up over her ears, Henry could see a few wisps of blond hair falling forward towards the weed she was inspecting. She plucked the poor plant, and added it to a bouquet of weeds she was holding, then continued on down the road in the same direction Henry was going, so her back was to them.
What do I do? Henry asked Sydon
Call to her so you won't scare her.
No! You call to her.
Sydon rolled his eyes,
not every body had a magic ring.
Henry, aftering realizing this was true, shouted,
"Uh... hello... little girl?"
The girl turned and looked at them then shouted right back,
"I am not a little girl. Who are you anyway?"
Henry looked down at Sydon.
Tell her who you are!
He looked back at the girl,
"my name's Henry," he shouted. She ran up to him and stuck out her hand.
"Nice to meet you Henry, my name is Polly, but everyone calls me Little Red Riding Hood."
"I thought you weren't little."
"I'm not! Just call me Polly."
"Nice to meet you Polly." He shook her hand.
"Why are you going to grandmothers?"
Henry looked down at Sydon,
"I don't know who that is."
Polly rapidly blinked her blue eyes.
"Shes the old lady that lives at the end of this road."
Henry shot the cats a told you so look, and they glowered at him.
"I didn't know anyone lived down here, I was just following the road to see ware it goes to."
"Oh. You want to walk with me?"
Henry received Sydons warning glance,
don't you dare.
"Sure, I'd love to."
