• Jan. 21, 2008 - Children's Book Monday: George Washington

As we've been studying American History, we have just fallen in love with George Washington.  All thanks to Ingri and Edgar Parin d'Aulaire.  They wrote and illustrated a beautiful picture book, entitled George Washington.

We've been reading it over a few days and my kids didn't want me to stop.  When we finished, we made tricorn hats--the three cornered hat popular in Washington's day!  On their own, they also decided to make the General's suit out of a brown paper grocery bag, ride on a stick horse, and bring out their swords to fight the "redcoats."

If a picture book can help your kids enjoy history and then want to re-create it, then I won't mind if our American History text continues to collect dust on the bookshelf.  I'm all for instilling a love of learning and what better way than using "living" books, rather than textbooks.

FInd more fantastic d'Aulaire books at your local library or from Beautiful Feet Books.  You won't want to miss out on these other American hero titles:  Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Buffalo Bill, Columbus, Leif the Lucky, and Pocahontas.

How fantastic! Kev does history with the boys, and we don't actually use a curriculum/text- just books! And these look like our next study- thanks!

I love that history is coming alive for your kiddos. It is my favorite subject to teach. I have bucket loads of trade books for American History. If you would like the names of some books my students have especially loved, feel free to e-mail me!

I love d'Aulaire books! And what cute little soldiers you have! I'll have to keep this in mind for when we get to Washington! We're still on Ben Franklin!

We love teaching history from "real books", too. When there are so many good ones out there, why do it any other way? It only makes sense to combine history & lit together, and it really does make both so much more interesting. Altho most of our reading now is at a higher level, I still occasionally do historical "picture books" w/my youngest two who are 9 & 12! When the illustrations are fabulous and the text tells the story well, why not? When we studied Washington last yr, we read one we've had since my olders were little called *George Washington : a Picture Book Biography*, by James Cross Giblin. All the illustrations are oil paintings and the book is very well done.

Here are the ones we've enjoyed this year, for future reference:
*How We Crossed the West* (Lewis & Clark), by Rosemary Schanzer
*By the Dawn's Early Light*, by Steven Kroll
*The Amazing Impossible Erie Canal*,
*Tree in the Trail* (Santa Fe Trail), by Holling C Holling.

The latter, as you may know already, is part of a wonderful series by Holling which feature great storylines and illustrations while incorporating much history, geography, and science. Do look them up if you are not familiar with them. If you ever need a break from straight chronological history, these books are a great choice, and you can even buy a $10 study guide from Beautiful Feet. (I haven't used it but have looked at it.)

Keep lighting those fires of learning! It is so much more enjoyable than trying to "fill the bucket".
