Thinking of something clever

• Mar. 11, 2008 - We're offical letterboxers!
So, we are now letterboxers! We had a ton of fun on this hunt! It was really easy and didn't take long to find it! K was really impressed and excited to see what was in the box. Inside the box we found a small picture album with cards inside for us to stamp with our stamp. There was also a stamp in the box to stamp our own journal. It was neat seeing where people were from who had signed the book. I wanted to take pics of theme but my batteries died. Here are the pics we managed to get.
Some of us were not as excited as others.

DH & K next to one of the clues in the hunt.

Its fuzzy because the batteries were dying, but here we are with our first letterbox find!!

• Mar. 11, 2008 - A Hunting We Will Go
| Have you ever heard of Geocaching or Letterboxing? I first heard of, or read actually, about geocaching here yesterday. I am completely amazed by this idea! What a fun way to spend a warm, sunny afternoon. Here is where the trouble begins ... we are not techies. We own very few high-tech gadgets and a GPS navigator is definitly not on the list of things we own. I called my wonderful friend (whose daughters blog here & here) to see if they owned one. I am not sure what it would have benefited me if they did, but they do not and she told me they had been letterboxing. Letterboxing is much more up my un-navigator -equipped alley. All I need is a compass and some sense of direction. I googled letterboxing and there are quite a few letterboxes hidden in our area. This afternoon we are headed for our first letterbox hunt. I am so excited! I will let you know what we find. In the meantime, tell me if you're a geocacher or letterboxer :) |

• Mar. 10, 2008 - Children's Books
Oh, I had this super long post all typed out and ready to go yesterday and then it all disappeared!
Anyways, I love children's books! A couple weeks ago we happened upon our local library book sale at the mall. We found several great books. My favorite purchase would have to be The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash. I loved this book as a child and much to my delight, K enjoyed it too! Her favorite purchase would have to be Curious George Goes to the Hospital. She has had several doctors' appointments and a couple trips to the lab for blood work the last couple weeks. She remembers how brave George was and it encourages her to be brave too! We also picked up If I Ran the Zoo and a Thomas the train book.
Probably my most favorite books are from Usborne. They have such great quality children's books and my kids love them as well. I am hosting a party on March 20th and have a wish list a mile long! I can't wait to pick up some new books!
So what are some of your favorite children's books and where do you buy most of them? I'm always looking for new titles and new places to shop! |

• Feb. 19, 2008 - Umm, Apples Aren't Purple
|
The winner of the contest is picture 1. Those two very lovely pictures were colored by my husband and myself. We like to play games after the girls are in bed, usually Boggle or Scrabble. However, last week the flu had attacked us and our brains were not up to par. Wanting to have a contest of some sort I suggested having a coloring contest and letting K pic the winner in the morning.
Most of K's pictures look like this ....

As I started my picture I had the fleeting thought that I should color in bold bright colors. But fleeting it was because I might have had a panic attack had I followed through on that thought. In my world everything should be the way it is ... reindeer are not black & orange with blue highlites. DH though followed his instinct and colored his picture the way he thought K would. He thought he had the contest in the bag. I thought he did too. I was actually very nervous. She picked mine though! I won! Na-na-boo-boo.
All joking aside, I realized something rather profound this week. We spent alot of time coloring as we tried to fight off our bug. When I taught at a pre-school before I had children I was required to attend workshops. At one of these workshops they told us to never tell children "apples aren't purple." Doing so would stunt their creative growth. Humph. Creative growth. By allowing them to color an apple purple or a monkey 15 different colors they were boundariless. If they colored that apple purple they would grow up defying authority all based on creative growth. My kids would not color apples purple. No siree.
That is until I had kids. The thought crossed my mind the other day, in an OCD kind of way, to tell K that trees are not orange, green, purple, blue & red. Look out the window ... do you see any trees that look like that? But I stopped myself as I realized that she knows good and well that she will not walk out into the world and see a tye-dyed tree. She knows that monkeys are not tye-dyed nor are apples purple. But in her world, where her mind is learning to explore and work things out apples can be whatever color she wants them to be. She will not challenge my authority over the color of a tree. She's just being a kid and there will come a time when her trees are all lovely shades of green. For now she is exercising her right to creative growth.

• Feb. 13, 2008 - Mod*Mom Giveaways
• Feb. 12, 2008 - My Love Story
I'm excited about entering my first contest from SmallWorld. Here is the love story of Adam and I.
I met Adam our freshman year of college while participating in Judgement Day 7. I had been an extra in the same scene the whole week and on the last night this sexy (can I say that here??) soccer player and his brother came in to help the last hour or so of the last night. We were in a mall scene so on one of the run-throughs Adam and I pretended to be a couple shopping. We were sitting on a bench with bags resting around us chatting. That was where we stayed. On that bench, chatting, for about 3 hours. That's odd to think of now because he is so not a talker. Anyways, at the end of the night we parted ways. I didn't see him for 3 more days until I realized he was in my english 101 class ... how had I missed this guy for half the semester?? Still didn't talk to him. About 2 weeks later he sent me an instant message and asked if I would be interested in going to the "library" with him. I was baffled .... what guy asks a girl out to the library for their first date?? He called me to clarify ... he meant the movies (a no no at our college). I said yes! We went out with about 8 other people to see the movie Teaching Mrs Tingle. All the girls loved it, the guys thought it was the dumbest movie ever brought to the big screen. Afterwards we went to Chilis and had bottomless chips and water. Yep. Thats it. Total bill for the whole table ... less than $5. That weekend was homecoming at our school. I sat at the game with him and his family invited me over for snacks and games. I went and I think he was a bit suprised to see me there. We went out a couple more times before Christmas break. I think I fell in love when he called me over that break. We became "offical" after we returned to school.
There was a major catastrophe that nearly ended our relationship during our sophomore year. I could have easily walked away, but I stayed. I am very glad I did. I know that I married the absolute best person on this earth for me despite the way I sometimes act. He is a wonderful husband and a great father. He is a very hard worker and well respected at his job. We have been married for almost 6 years. We have two beautiful daughters here with us and one daughter that went to heaven half-way through my last pregnancy. There is absolutely no other man I would want to be on this journey with.
This is the worst wedding pic I could come up with.
**Update** I am having some trouble with the disc my wedding pics are saved on. I will hopefully have a pic posted before the close of the contest. |

• Feb. 11, 2008 - Where we are with school
K has become very interested in letters and in writing. She loves to watch the show SuperWhy on PBS and I have to admit that I like it too. She is learning alot from watching it. Since she had started writing some letters on her own I decided to take the opportunity to start working with her more. Our schooling now consist of working in a preschool workbook from wal-mart (learning/reaffirming things such as behind, above, beside, etc) and then writing letters and working on their sounds. So far we've done Aa & Bb, this week will be Cc. She is also learning a verse with each letter. Most days she does very well and enjoys it. Some days, well that's another story for another day. I think once we master letters we will start Learn to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. At the rate we are moving we would start in the fall. If you've used this please give me a short review .... what did you like, what did you not like, etc. |

• Feb. 10, 2008 - I'm Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!
Finally, over a year later, I'm back! I have a new computer that works!! I've been trying to keep up with everyone's blogs and though you may not have known it, I've even commented here and there. I am glad to be part of the homeschoolblogger community again!
Well, I was on the path to intoductions and re-introductions but apparently an alien came and took my words. They were here, and now they are gone ... mid-type. I hope he enjoys them. I must get to packing, we are heading to Nashville in the morning! |
