Keeping Up

Jan. 6, 2006 - Painting planets

DS4 stayed last night with Gramma and Grampa (his regular Thursday night routine), and came home after going to the zoo today. The first words out of his mouth were "I want to paint my planets now!"  He worked very hard on it--his focus was amazing.

We also had another good science day.  When I pulled down all of the books (Sonlight K) for our "reading" time, he got so excited.  He said, "I want to do Chemistry!!" So after Bible, we went straight to chemistry.  After reading chapter 1 again, and part of chapter 2 (molecules), we studied the periodic table for awhile. Then he asked for a notebook and got a marker.  He wrote "ATOMS" on the front, and started drawing.  The book uses cartoon-ish depictions of the atoms, so he drew a circle with a face and lots of appendages.  He then wrote 82 LEAD on the page.  He did 4 more pages after that, and if they were in the chemistry book we talked about how many "arms" it had--nitrogen has 3 arms, so it can join to up to 3 other atoms, but not more.

My poor little one is sick.  We had to stay home this morning from Mother's Council (a fun mother's group at a local church) because he has a fever.  This afternoon it was even up to 104.  His highest fever yet.  But he was still (mostly) happy and playing well, so we went no-meds.  He also took a good nap, and is sleeping relatively well.  He's been awake several times to nurse, but I'm glad that he has, it keeps him hydrated.  We did have fun playing with E's marble run.  I would set one up for A, and he would drop the marbles, and clap and cheer if we got it right.  He also likes to build with the blocks--E was not much of a block builder, so it's cute for me to see.

So sorry to hear you little one was sick. I hope the fever has broken by now and he is back on the mend. Gregory runs high, spiking fevers every time he runs a fever. He never ran those mild 99.5s like the other kids in the family. Never a gentle bake - always a 'clean the oven' don't open the door setting. LOL. Once, when he was about 6, the doctor told us to put him in the tub to bring down his fever which toped over 104. That was such misery to him. He spent 30 minutes shivering and begging to lay down as he sat in the tub and we sponged him before it went below 104. Thankfully, he has not topped over 104 since then and he has not had to go through that again.

I loved reading about your young scientist. He sounds so on fire to learn. Isn't it wonderful to be homeschooling where we get to be a part of that and be sure it is never extinguished? :0) Chemistry is our favorite branch of science; though biology is a close second - especially when the creek has water.

He didn't want to get new glasses at all, but his prescription went up, so he needed them. BUt in retrospect, I think he thought that he wouldn't be able to see with the new glasses, because when we tried the frames on, of course there was no correction in them! After he found out he could still see with the new glasses, he said "mom, next time I want pink glasses!" LOL!

I do love watching him love chemistry. He really isn't into biology or nature, which has somewhat frustrated me. Aren't preschoolers supposed to LOVE nature walks? He is somewhat interested in animals, but not to learn more and more. He's just not pulled in. But chemistry... ahh. His love. (at least for now!)

Oh, and Anders still has a fever. I had to give him Tylenol today, as it was over 104 several times and he was really uncomfy. Hopefully tomorrow he'll be better? I actually think he may have roseola. At least, that's what Erik had the time he ran a high fever for several consecutive days.

sounds like E is doing great -- i have flashbacks of college chem (i had to take 21 hours of it. yikes!) -- however if i'd have had a teacher like you, perhaps i'd have grasped it better than my mad science looking prof who was not gifted as a teacher!
praying for A today that he is on the mend physically. big hugs to all of you. T is excited to start "pen-pal'ing" with E. He'll likely get the first letter out sometime this week!

My son and I are absolutely amazed at how much your son looks like our Louis. In fact, I fooled Stanley by asking him "who is this in the picture" he really thought it was his brother.
