I will be closing down this blog permanently and deleting the profile at that time. I believe most of my readers are already over at my newer/regular blog these days, but in case there are any stragglers that want to follow us through our homeschool/life/my occasional rants, (lol), you need to let me know by the end of the month and I will direct you to the correct location of the blog. Thanks! Well, I obviously won't be buying these books as gifts for Christmas gifts.

Apparently, the book Twilight is very popular amongst teens right now. It was not even on my radar as a book. I frequent this blog and her post and the ensuing discussion was very interesting.A Wise Woman Builds Her Home After this one, one of the commentors on the blog is right.

At this point, the question is no longer "Why do WE homeschool?", the question has become "Why on earth don't YOU?". And no, maybe, just maybe this particular thing is not happening in your child's school - but do you know it for sure? Are you willing to put your child at risk any longer?? http://regularthoughts.blogspot.com/2009/11/why-homeschool-part-29.html Shutting down the blog

Due to some bad behavior by "trolls" a few years ago, I had all but shut this one down and am at a point that I really see no need to bother with this blog any further. I will be totally shutting down this blog at the end of the month (or there abouts) and deleting this profile permanently. If you want to read my regular blog, let me know. I am pretty sure that most of you already have my blog address (I see your IP addresses pop up over there rather than here). But, I wanted to let the last few of you know that if you wanted the blog address to our mostly regularly updated blog (not as often as I'd like, but the baby keeps me busy these days), you need to leave me a note and I will get it to you. Thanks! M Thanksgiving Resources

Already preparing for Advent

After reading and totally enjoying Jotham's Journey last year during the season of Advent, we are anxiously awaiting Bartholomew's Passage to arrive in the mail. We fully expect to buy Tabitha's Travels when it is republished next year. Here is the description of the 1 we are waiting on:Bartholomew's Passage is an engaging story that guides families through the Advent season. Young Bartholomew's adventures start when Roman soldiers destroy his village and disperse his family, continue through his enslavement to a tyrannical master and his escape with his new friend Nathan, and end with a reunion with his family in Bethlehem. Along the way Bartholomew makes a new friend, a young boy named Jotham! When I had a chance at a good price at the end of last year, I bought a few as gifts for those I knew who had been looking for them, but had missed out on the great price I had paid for mine earlier in the season and a couple of others as gifts. One thing I should add, though, is that if you have very young children present for each nights reading, I would make sure you pre-read and potentially edit some of it as it could be potentially scary to very young children (I am talking about the 5 and under set here, in my opinion - but we read a lot of great literature that includes edge of your seat stuff - it could be different for your family). Anyway, for those of you reading and have read the series during Advent and enjoyed them, please add your .02 here for the books! Laughter

{updated} Apparently, there is another event happening next Tuesday - President Obama is going to speak to the students across the country! This was sent out to the schools in a local district:http://www.kmsd.edu/files/calendar/PresidentObamamsg1.pdf Oh and here is the news story that goes with the video posted below: Parents upset over 'leftist propaganda' video----------------------- From what I understand, this is being shown in the public schools classrooms. A bunch of celebrities stating they are pledging to do what Obama tells them - to be a SERVANT to our president. Specifically President Obama (well, until we see the real deal anyway). Before you get your back up and tell me that this is wonderful and that you voted for Obama (and of course, you hated Bush - don't get me wrong - I was not exactly thrilled with some of the stuff pulled during his 2nd term), what if the tables were turned - WHAT IF this had been shown to your children and it was pro-Bush (or any other conservative president). Being a volunteer is just that - voluntary. If it is "mandatory" it is no longer voluntary, it is simply working for free....

I saw them interviewing the author of this book on the television this morning while I was making the bed in my room (yes, I actually watched something, lol!). ANYWAY - while several books have been written regarding modesty, tastefulness, etc. from Christian point of view, it is a much smaller number that have been written from a secular point of view.I have not read this book yet (obviously - it is brand new on the market), but I hope to sooner rather than later. However, I was able to read a few sample pages on Amazon and it looks very fun and very interesting. If they can get this out in the front of bookstores and in bookstore windows, we might have a chance at not having to see everybody's personal pieces and parts (IYKWIM). Well - if any of them can tear themselves away from their texting before they walk into a pole.... How to be a Hepburn in a Hilton World by Jordan Christy

A challenging question

More often than not, we homeschoolers are asked why we homeschool and get the comment "I could never homeschool my children." after you tell them why.I want to reverse the question. If you send your child to a government (public) school or even a private school, why do YOU do so? A simple enough question, but I doubt the answer is as simple as you like to think. Then, after you answer the question, have a good look at your answer. How good are those answers? Are they solid, well supported answers or are the generic fluff. And if you were to tell me that your school is different/better than all the others, I would solidly challenge you on it to show me how/why. You don't really have to tell me, but seriously - turn off your television, turn off your phone and put away your gossip magazine and turn on your brain and really think about your decision to trust the government with educating your children (after all, there are a whole lot of us who do not necessarily care to trust the government with our healthcare...and this is the care and training of your children's minds). Just in case

Time does not wait for chores to get done anymore than babies wait to grow up while you get them done.--------------------------------------------------- Mother, O Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth, Hang out the washing, make up the bed, Sew on a button and butter the bread. Where is the mother whose house is so shocking? She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking. Oh, I’ve grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue, Lullaby, rockabye, lullaby loo. Dishes are waiting and bills are past due Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peek-a-boo The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew And out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo But I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo Look! Aren’t his eyes the most wonderful hue? Lullaby, rockaby lullaby loo. The cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow But children grow up as I’ve learned to my sorrow. So quiet down cobwebs; Dust go to sleep! I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep. - Ruth Hulbert Hamilton Top Five Reasons Not to Send Your Kids Back to Govt. School

{I am leaving parts of what I am writing about vague on purpose to protect people’s identity. I do not want it to be misconstrued that I am gossiping. I apologize in advance to those of you to whom it seems rather confusing – if you really feel the need to know what "rule" I am talking about, please email me directly, but I will not give you anything that would identify the time, place or person(s) involved. I should also clarify that I am not necessarily talking about "minor" aged children here. The failing I am discussing is across the board and has affected various age groups of "children" - keeping in mind that "I" am someone's child... I recently encountered an interesting attitude. It was something along the lines of “I appreciate your values”, but “our family values dictate this behavior”. It was something that many people in our current society would not consider a big deal – and sadly, I have to include today’s “Christians”. I put Christians in quotes because I am not convinced that all that call themselves Christians are truly saved. They may well have been “Christianized”, but not necessarily saved. You have met them. They say all the right Christian phrases and catch words, but if you were to hear them talking to someone outside of their church circle, you would not know to listen to them that they had actually had a change inside of them when they decided to follow Christ. Anyway, back to the attitude I mentioned in the first paragraph. The attitude is highly reflective of what is being taught not just to children, but to parents as well – in school, society and even in the workplace. The concept that each family has a different set of values and that is “okay” has been around for quite a while at this point, but to hear it being spouted out of a person in a “Christian” family was disconcerting. As a Christian, truly, my values should be the same as ALL other Christians. And yet, I from this same person who mentioned the “family values” (boy, this puts a whole different spin on that phrase, huh?!), came the comment (in regards to the topic at hand) that they did not know that this particular topic was addressed in the Bible, thus they were not sure that it was the real deal (seriously – it is one that most of us learned, or should have, as children….not the “obscure” one that Obama referred to in Romans Ch. 1). Another part to this conversation was that since they did not read their Bible and thus, did not know about it, it basically did not apply to them. I challenge other Christians to take this concept to heart and really think about it. How many things have you not learned about – because you have chosen to NOT read your Bible and expect that your pastor will teach it to you or that your children will be taught it in Sunday School (and this was one that would have been learned early on)? Obviously, if you have not read your Bible, you don’t know. I am not perfect - while I work on reading my Bible all the way through, I catch things that I have missed in the past all the time. BUT, does that excuse us from responsibility? After all, even the police will tell you that ignorance of the law is no excuse (for breaking the law). Why would the laws of the Bible applying to Christians be any different? I guess what makes me the most upset was this person was obviously never taught this particular rule by parents who absolutely knew better and the ramifications of it are so far reaching that it is incredible. I suspect we are looking at a truly lost generation in today's children and even their parents. Shame on the pastors of such churches that cannot be bothered to teach what is actually in the Bible. If people are no longer reading their Bibles, then how on earth can Pastors expect their parishioners to be able to "apply" the Bible to their daily life?? That dangerous place, the internet

Sometime within the last couple of months, someone commented to me that you have to be careful on the internet because people can find out a lot about you. Who? I simply cannot remember – I have not slept long enough in recent weeks to have that fact filed in my brain. If you are reading this and made the comment and think I am using it to be mean to you, please do not think so. Your comment actually comment made an impact on me and has been running around in my brain until finally, I thought I would write a bit on it and the thoughts swirling in my brain with it. Yes, the internet can be a dangerous place, especially if people have malicious feelings towards you and act upon them or you are hanging out on websites with lots of weirdos. Yes, people can find out lots about you (especially if they know where to look for you). But, I think the opposite can be true as well. Sometimes, on the internet, you can find out a lot about yourself – and sometimes, it might not be very pretty. Oh, I am not necessarily talking about people gossiping about one another, although that does happen with amazing frequency (and you might find out the ugly truth about what others think of you). If you peruse the right places on the internet, you might find that there are things that you do not like about yourself and want to change them. I have found some of the most wonderful blogs and other websites written by wonderful, godly, Christian women. Many are extremely edifying – and can be very convicting. I have discovered things about myself that I did not care very much for in reading through them. Talk about a chastening of spirit. More often than not, it sent me to my Bible and then to my knees. No, I am not perfect, by any means. But I am striving to be a more godly woman each day. Yes, the internet can be a dangerous place to do so – you might find out that you are not necessarily living your life right or that your walk with Christ is not what it should be. And, of course, that requires one stepping out of their comfort zone and doing something about it. Interesting observation with the "newer" baby snacks

I learned something interesting watching my little guy last month as he was introduced to finger foods (well, as much finger foods as a 7 or 8 month old cares about, lol). Baby G had gotten a container of the new flavored "puffs" from Grandma in his Easter basket. When I felt he was ready to try picking up food, I tried a few of them on the high chair tray. As I watched over the next few days, I grew a little concerned. It seemed as though something was lacking from his small motor skills. He could not get those puffs into his mouth for some reason, but was fine if I stuck them in his mouth for him.So, I watched him closer (learned to watch processes closer when there are problems as I taught my sister to drive my standard transmission car forever ago). I realized it was not necessarily that he could not pick them up or that he was not getting them to his mouth. The issue was something wholly different - the "puffs" are made to disintigrate into baby's mouth (to prevent choking, I guess). But, that was a problem here. Baby G's fingers (and hands) were damp often (teething) or got that way trying to feed himself. The "puffs" would start to disintegrate on his fingers and stick there - making them unmanagable for him. What to do about this interesting situation? I went back to the old, non-sticky standby - Cheerio's! And Baby G learned how to handle those much, much easier. He has not choked on them yet (neither did his older siblings). And so, Baby G has developed those, oh so important small motor skills that he needed. He now can manage those "puffs" with ease. So, my lesson learned to pass onto new mom's - rather than start with the "puffs", start with the Cheerio's - they are better for your baby, lol! { Last Page } { Page 1 of 2 } { Next Page } |
