Tightwad Tuesday----Uses for Baking Soda

Baking soda is economical, nonharmful to the environment and can be used in many ways around the house. Where else can you get this much value for around half a dollar?

Use Baking Soda for cleaning:
To clean your microwave: Place a (microwave safe) cup of water mixed with a teaspoon of baking soda  inside your microwave. Microwave  for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove cup and wipe out inside of microwave with a damp cloth.
To aid in dishwashing:, add a tablespoon of baking soda to your soapy water - it softens hands and cuts grease!
For cleaning surfaces: use ¼ cup baking soda, mixed with 2 tablespoons water, to create a thick paste. The  mixture can be applied directly to the surface or a wet sponge for cleaning and deodorizing.
If applied and left for a while on stains and stuck-on food, it will whiten and remove stains and any hard-to-remove food.

Use for deodorizing:
Sprinkle it on carpets and vacuum, in shoes, in the laundry basket, or  the pet’s bedding.

Use to Unclog Your Drain:  If you need to unclog a drain, or just want to help keep them clear, place 1 cup of baking soda down the drain. Pour 1 cup of vinegar down the drain. Let sit for 15 minutes. Pour hot water or boiling water down the drain.

For Bug Bites or Bee Stings: Combine baking soda & water or baking soda & vinegar and place on bug bites or bee sting.

For A Skin Exfoliator: make a paste by mixing a small amount of baking soda with a little bit of water in your hands for an excellent skin exfoliator. Great for dry skin on face, feet & elbows.

I also use baking soda for many things around our home. My main use is in my homemade fabric softener. It really makes the clothes smell fresh!

I was trying to buy some of those refrigerator boxes of Baking Soda at Target the other day; and I couldn't find them anywhere! I love to buy the great big box for cleaning. I usually only find that at Wal-mart or the grocery store. Thanks for the extra ideas!

Hi Pam
How is your father doing? I prayed like you asked and still pray when you come to mind. Let me know. Be strong in the Lord my sister.

You asked about where to get the Wallaby yogurt and where to buy organics. This is a store locator for Wallaby - http://www.wallabyyogurt.com/html/faqs.htm#whereBuy Just below that is a link for for a printable request form (fill it out and take it to your store to request they stock it).

As far as organics, there is a health food store in Chattanooga but I don't know where or the name. Publix carries some and also has their own line of organics and natural products called Greenwise. Kroger has a few things (it was very few when I was up your way 3 years ago) and Ingles has a ton of stuff (we went in a couple when in northeast GA last year and were floored at how much organic stuff they had). There's also Whole Foods and Trader Joe's in the Atlanta area. Target/Super Target has a decent selection and of course there's always the dreaded, horrible WalMart.

Amazon sells a lot of organic and natural items in their grocery section, but everything has to be purchased in case quantity (not a bad deal if you find something you really like and use, but not helpful for refrigerated and frozen items).

I always love seeing that I have a comment from you. The recipes on your other blog look delicious! I'll have to try out a couple of them. I've specifically been looking for something to do with the round steak I have in the freezer.

The remodel is progressing. We are blessed we will be able to have a room set aside for school. Currently we do most of our school time in the den which doubles as dh's office. Living in the chaos of this remodel has really given me the desire to be much more organized once all is said and done.

As for the Math-U-See, I actually have and love Saxon for my ds, but dd just doesn't learn the same way he does. So I thought we'd try MUS. I've done it for a couple of days now. I'll let you know how it goes once we're more experienced.

Hope it's a beautiful day in Georgia!

terrific tips! I also learned today that a mixture of baking soda and peroxide will help clean up grout and keep it looking great!

We're going to try it out in our kitchen and see what happens!

I do enjoy your tightwad tips! I love it when I already do the stuff you do, and I love it more when I find something new to help! Thank you!
Thanks for popping over to mine again. Can't believe you've nearly finished school for the year. We don't finish here until late July. I talked to an American friend and she explained about snow days and and and until I think I kind of understand the US system! I hope you don't quit blogging til your new year begins?!

How many of those do you use it for? I'm just curious, because I read stuff like that and then never seem to implement it. LOL!
