Herb Garden Questions and Answers

Several people have had questions about my fruit and herb gardens so I will try to post a few
short  answers today.
We grow raspberries, blueberries,  and blackberries.  We never do well with blueberries, but we collect over a gallon a day of blackberries for a month to six weeks. That's a lot of berries!

I have around thirty-five to forty different types of herbs, including four types of mint--chocolate, mountain, pepperment, and apple. Here's a row I have growing near our house.  If you are looking for an easy herb to grow, this is it. You just can't kill this stuff.

I also grow herbs in pots. This is great for invasive herbs (like mint!), cooking herbs, or herbs that won't survive in our climate in the winter.  Here's some pots of mint, lemon verbena, and apple scented pelargonium.

Finally, I won the Mother's Day contest from School in R Home. !  I recieved these lovely gifts today-- a journal, a Cooking with Kids CD,  and a God's Little Devotional Book for Mom's.  Thanks School in R Home!

Join our sweet host, Mary  for more show and tells.  Also, my son, "Ash", is hosting his first show and tell. If you have a chance, click over to his blog and leave him a comment.  I am trying to encourage his writing skills, and he is disappointed because he doesn't get many comments.

Whoa!!! So gardening is a major hobby for you! I am speechless! Wow! Blackberries are one of my husband's favorite fruits, and he thinks nothing of devouring a large container in one sitting. But a gallon a day?? I'm speechless again!

I Love chocolate mint! I need to find it again and replant. We lost it a couple of years ago. ( odd for mint!) It makes a wonderful air freshener. Blessings.

I just LOVE your garden. I have always wanted to plant the chocolate mint. Is it a nice one ?

This year we are enjoying starting a new garden in our new land. My MIL has been here for over 30 years but we are planting in a area she didn't tame. We made a raised bed up by the front of the house. We will terrece off the slope between our house and the fruit orchard. I also hope to put in some raised beds infront of the house after the siding goes up. Still waiting on that.

Sending blessings and ((HUGS)) my SSiC

VERY lovely! I was disappointed that our nursery didn't have much in herbs this year - I guess I will have to start them myself.

Congrats on winning!!!

Hey, I wish I'd known that about the mint before I put some chocolate mint from a friend in my bed in front of the house!
And why do you suppose the blueberries don't do well? We're putting in some bushes.....they seem to do well at the blueberry farm nearby. Hmmmm.
I've heard that before, though.

Ok so what do you do with all those herbs?! Are they jsut for looks or do you use them?
My dh would never leave your garden with all those berries!! He loves berries of any kind. Wow, we're coming to join you in picking them. What a neat experience for your children. My dh has stories of picking wild berries around his home in OR when he was a child. I wish my own children could experience that as well. I wonder if we could get them to grow here in CO? Probably too cold.

:) Blessings on your weekend!

Congratulations on your Mother's Day gift. :) Pretty neat.

When you grow your herbs, do you start from plants or seeds? I've tried seeds because they are cheap, but we don't have a lot of luck with them. :( Herb plants aren't too cheap here, so I don't want to waste the energy and money on things I'll probably have trouble with.

Just had to ask. . .

Oh, and BTW...aren't you happy it's a Davids Showdown?

RYC ... the funny thing about the story though, is that my son is not really that close with that kid, but obviously any friendship they did have was memorable! Our little guy has a big personality, so it just makes us laugh! :)

I really want to expand our herbs - I would love to grow mint! I found a few new things (packs of seeds) at Home Depot so I'll get those going this fall.

The guy they arrested they got on probation violation charges. He was seen trying to set a fire at 4am Tues. (?) morning and then tried to set more fires as he was running from police. The last I heard, he hasn't been charged with any of the other fires though. They have arson investigation teams here sifting through everything for clues. Hopefully they will find all the guilty parties soon.

Your herbs are an inspiration. I've had a couple of pots on my windowsill, but I'm ready to 'dig deeper' now! You'll have to do a show & tell on harvesting and drying them too!

Blessings,
Laurie

Hi Pam.
Sorry I haven't been here in a while. Had some computer issues, and a very busy couple of weeks. Thanks for the vinegar and baking soda tips! Some of them I knew--some I didn't. I love the pictures of your gardens! My mom would love those too! I hope you and your family are doing well. My girls are great, but hubby has a severe ear infection--he's getting better though. I hope you and your family have a great week. Did you have a good Mother's Day?

First of all, thanks for stopping by and commenting on my page. It's encouraging to know there are others who feel the same way as I do.

Second of all, this is my first year to have a garden of any kind. I've got a vegetable garden started and I planted some mint, lemon, and cinnamon in pots that I have on the deck. I didn't know there was a chocolate mint; I'll have to try and find some for myself. It sounds wonderful!
