At Home with the Hobbs
Jun. 25, 2009 - Can I Change Curriculum???

I can't believe I'm thinking about doing this, but I'm probably changing history curriculum.  Yikes!  My children still in this home school balked loudly when they first heard me discussing it.

But I feel like time is flying by.  I want to sew with Hannah and teach the boys how to draw some and appreciate more art and music and learn more Scripture and visit more needy people.  I don't want these years to go by without doing what matters most..  AND probably most importantly, I want to reach the hearts of my children in ways I haven't before.  I want to hear from God and obey in ways I haven't before.  I want more relationship with God and each other and maybe not so much academics.

The only thing that stays the same is change.  I feel old.

May I ask what you were using and what you will be using?

Thanks

Jun. 25, 2009 - I was using...
Posted by His
Tapestry of Grace. I have used it for 7 years and have really loved it but it is very intense. I am going to keep some of the same techniques but am going to change to a more Charlotte Mason method emphasizing Scripture memory, Bible study, art and nature study, etc. I also want to spend more time teaching diligence and excellence in work to my children; Tapestry has been more in volume of reading and writing. I guess I am wanting to slow down just a bit. You can check it out at www.simplycharlottemason.com. I am not going to go strictly by this site's plan, but will utilize a lot of their suggestions.

Hey, I enjoyed seeing you and visiting with you yesterday!

I've so enjoyed talking to you every time we talked, and at the book sale was no exception! Oh, if only it was longer or more often...

And we're going to be doing more of a Charlotte Mason style, too. I haven't gotten it all worked out in my head just yet. Thanks for the link! I will definitely look at it. I've been reading A Charlotte Mason Companion and really enjoy it, but I'm not sure how to "do" it all just yet. I've also recently read Teaching the Trivium, which I really liked. I'm hoping to be able to combine the ideas and methods and find a way that works for us (and me).

Oh, I bet you're sad to quit tapestry. it's such a neat curriculum, I really liked it the year we did it.

but it is time-consuming. I'm sure your switch will be good.

Speaking of history I have been wanting to go through the Rhetoric stuff, at least the readings (probably not the assignments) for every 'year' of TOG - there's so much of history that I don't know that well and so much I haven't read... you aren't gonna get rid of your books, are you? I could borrow some, right?

I don't make much time to read right now, but I could make more, and I want to read more :)
