    Elections Unit Study - Co-op

    Posted in Homeschooling

    Elections Unit Study

We had a lot of fun this week in our co-op class as we expanded our study from Presidents into Elections.  We are adding to a lapbook that was started with the Presidental study as well.  We started out the day with "Start Student" and then had our devotions.  We went into the sanctuary and discussed the need of each family and person praying for our country...not only in these times...but in all times...we discussed some ways we could pray for our country and read over some Bible verses with justice as the theme and then each child pasted a Bible verse to a flag which they colored to remind them to pray for our country.  We discussed that the Bible is very clear that we should obey the government and keep its laws, pay taxes etc...  We learned that in Romans 13, God tells us that all authority comes from God (good or bad) and the we are to be in subjection to it.  We also learned that that Paul encouraged us not only to obey our government, but also to pray for it...(1Timothy 2:1-2 states: First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quite life in all godliness and dignity.)  We learned that it was especially interesting for Paul to be writing this because during the time of his writings, Nero, was the emperor and he was famous for killing Christians.  We learned that even though we are to have an allegiance to our country and obey our laws...ultimately our home is home is in heaven and our king is the KIng of Kings and Lord of Lords and there is no other allegiance as important as our commitment to God.

We then made a booklet to go on the back of our lapbook that had many of the American symbols in it.  www.bensguide.gpo.gov The kids sang the National Anthem several times while they were working away on their books.

I had several books on the tables which worked our great.  If someone got finished a little early they just sat back and read a book and seemed to really enjoy that.  Here is a list of a few of the books we are using:  A More Perfect Union: The Story of our Constitution by Betsy and Giulio Maestro, Duck for President by Doreen Cronin, The U.S. Constitution and You by Syl Sobel, The Voice of the People - American Democracy in Action by Betsy and Giulio Maestro, This is America - The American Spirit in Places and People by Don Robb,  If I Ran For President by Catherine Stier, America: A Patriotic Primer by Lynne Cheney, How the US Government Works by Syl Sobel and The Story of the White House by Kate Waters.

I read aloud the Dr. Seuss favorite, Yertle the Turtle, which was suggested as a simple reminder of power and balance and a good analogy for children of all ages.  It is a good example of the concept of dictatorship and how it affects others.  They loved it!

Next we did some exercises and stretches from the Presidentals Physical Fitness Challenge.  www.presidentschallenge.org

We then went outside for some free play and ate red, white, and blue rocket bomb popsicles!

We then moved on to some vocabulary words and made some cards and wrote out definitions and put them in a little book in our lapbook.

The older class came into our class and did some campaign speeches and we had a chance to do some voting.  That was fun!  We will do more with in the next few weeks.  We also voted on a secret ballot for our drink for next week: milk or juice!

After lunch, we shifted to our book club ... which this month we are basing off the book:

Teaching Art with Books Kids Love: Art Elements, Appreciation, and Design with Award-Winning Books by Darcie Clark Frohardt (Illustrator), Darcie Frohardt (Author)

We will be learning some cartooning techinques next week.

All in all we had a great day!  We are looking forward to next week!

I used material from the elections unit study I purchased from:

    www.currclick.com and www.handsofachild.com

What's For Dinner Wednesday - Banana Boats

    Posted in Adventure

    Camping Recipes

    Banana Boats

     Makes 1

    Ingredients

    • 1 banana
    • chocolate chips
    • mini marshmallows
    •

    Directions

Slice unpeeled banana lengthways. Insert desired filling, chocolate and mini marshmallows are always a a favorite. Wrap in foil and cook over hot coals or on a grill for approx. 10 minutes open up and eat with a spoon. Yum! Yum!

We are planning an upcoming camping trip.  We haven't tent camped in several years and so everyone is so excited.  This was always a favorite recipe for me when I was growing up and camping with my family or in Girl Scouts.  It is so easy and sooooooooo good.  If you have a fire pit you could easily do this in the backyard.  I found some other really great camping recipes at www.koa.com under the "kidzone" section.  Many are ones I remember from my childhood like Hobo Stew...that was always my favorite meal.  There were also some other great tips and ideas and a good "checklist" for tent camping.

    The Mystery of History........Creation

    Posted in Homeschooling

We have decided to start anew with our Mystery of History curriculum so everyone is in on the fun and learning....we are going over a quick review of where we left off last year.  (which was about 1/3 of the first book).  We are reviewing creation and made these creation mobiles today.  Thanks Lori..... www.homeschoolblogger.com/pearcefamily

I read the creation account from the Bible as the girls were working on their mobile this morning and then printed them a copy of the scriptures for their notebooks.

Tomorrow we are making creation books with the actual scriptures and will place in a 3 ring folder.

    Birthday!

    Posted in Daily Life

We have ongoing birthdays around here that last for a few days or sometimes even weeks....and several parties!  Birthdays are so fun!  We always use the special birthday plate for the birthday girl!  We took our family and some friends to the Constitution Week festival on her actual birthday.  I had found this so CUTE bear in red, white, and blue to remind her of that fun day!  She loved it!  We also had grandma and grandpa over and older sisters' beau over for a birthday lunch on Sunday. It was very fun and we grilled steaks and had baked potatoes, marianated fresh veggies, french bread, and peach pie with vanilla ice cream.  It was all yummy!!!!!!!!!  For co-op the next day, she got to take her class chocolate chip cookies and more ice cream!  Since one of her sisters' birthday is so close to hers and they are 19 months apart, they usually share their friend birthday party.  It works out very well because they have many of the same friends and they can just have one big party (with two cakes)...one year we had Strawberry Shortcake and StarWars...hard to combine those two!  We usually have the party sometime between both their birthdays which is sometime in October....they are planning for a spend the night this year!  Hmmmm...we better get planning!

    Constitution Week

    Posted in Homeschooling

Did you know that Sept. 17th - Sept 23 is Constitution Week?  Our town celebrates in a great way.  All week they have volunteers that go into the schools dressed in period clothes and educate the students on the Constitution.  We had a wonderful lady visit our co-op and do a presentation.  We found out she was a homeschool mom and Christian.  On Saturday, they hold a big festival with games, music, food, campaigning, characters dressed in historic attire, replicas of some of the buildings in Washington, fireworks...and the list goes on and on... I am planning to volunteer at this event next year!

Maybe I can dress as Betsy Ross!  We took our girls and two of their friends.  We also made it a mini birthday celebration for one of our daughters!  It was so much fun!  We have been to this several times before and it always such a wonderful patriotic experience.  We had hamburgers, hotdogs (which they only get on rare occasions) and apple pie!  Yummy!  Later that night we stopped by Sonic and got mini banana splits and sang "Happy Birthday" in the car!

I also met a very good contact for the DAR (to join DAR is on my list of 101 things to do in 1001 days) and the Children of the American Revolution.  I am very excited about that! The Children of the American Revolution has a wonderful program here in our area that I wasn't even aware of!  www.dar.org

The website is www.constitutionweekusa.com.  It has specific details for the event in AZ but it also has a great family lesson plan that you can download for free and some other really good resources.

We are studying the presidents and the election over Sept. and Oct. in our co-op so this just fit in perfect with their learning.  We are working on a lapbook in co-op.  Some of the sites we are using are... www.whitehouse.gov , www.notebooklearning.com (a great free downloadable lap book on elections) and www.handsofachild.com .

Here is another good site: http://www.usconstitution.net/constkidsK.html and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_TXJRZ4CFc

What's For Dinner Wednesday - Roasted Chicken with Lemon Rosemary Rub

    LEMON AND ROSEMARY CHICKEN

    1 lemon
    Several sprigs of rosemary
    Salt and pepper
    1 tbsp. olive oil
3 lb. chicken, cut into serving pieces

.Rub chicken with olive oil and lemon juice mixture. Sprinkle individual rosemary leaves over top of chicken or stuff whole sprigs under the skin of the chicken.  Place thin cut slices of lemon on top of chicken and place in roaster and roast for about an hour.

This is one of the meals I am making this month for my OAMC club.  I made it for our family a few weeks and it was great.  Along with the chicken I roasted garlic cloves, onions and mushrooms.  You could add any vegetables you like in the roaster.  It turned out really good!

    A servant's heart....

Every morning we start our school off we devotions, prayer, a book pertaining to something we are learning and our family read aloud book.  For example...Our devotional reading right now is Discovering Jesus in Exodus by Susan Hunt and Richie Hunt (we are near the end of that book and will be starting something new soon).  We have a memory verse that goes along with this book.  We read from the Bible according to the suggested reading from the lesson.   Our read aloud library type book this morning was Through Granpa's Eyes by Patricia MacLachlan since we have been celebrating Granparent's Day and then our family read aloud book is Making Brothers and Sisters Best Friends....How to Fight the Good Fight at Home by Sarah, Stephen, and Grace Mally.  This is the second time we are reading through this book!  We read a few pages every day.

Today there was a list of characteristics of a true servant that I thought I would share:

    A true servant:

Knows that all assignments are actually from God

    Will be quick to volunteer

    Considers his assignment important

    Takes orders

Does not desire to have authority

Will do what others do not or will not do

    Enjoys meeting needs of others

    Doesn't need recognition

    Will voluntarily serve without pay

    Doesn't seek higher status

Will do more than is required

Does not have his own selfish ambitions

Will serve anyone - even those whom others don't like to serve

Is willing to be treated like a servant

Does not seek the "big" and "important" jobs or assignments

Will serve with a joyful attitude

Will put his whole heart into each task

    Thinks of others before himself

Desires that his master receives the credit

Desires that God receives the glory

The bottom line of our study today was that God has given to each of us the perfect place to learn to be a servant - at home!

You can see more about these books on my red Amazon widget.

Music Monday - hymn of the week

    Posted in Music Monday

This is something new to our homeschool this year - a hymn of the week.  We always start our school with devotions, prayer, Bible reading and a read a loud (right now we are reading Making Brothers and Sisters Best Friends).  (again!)  We are going to add in a hymn on a regular basis.  This is our first one:

Nothing But the Blood of Jesus

    Robert Lowry

What can wash away my sin?
    Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

    Refrain

    Oh! precious is the flow
    That makes me white as snow;
    No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

For my pardon, this I see,
    Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

    Refrain

    Nothing can for sin atone,
    Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Naught of good that I have done,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

    Refrain

This is all my hope and peace,
    Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
    This is all my righteousness,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

    Refrain

    Now by this I’ll overcome—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus,
Now by this I’ll reach my home—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

    Refrain

    Glory! Glory! This I sing—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus,
All my praise for this I bring—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

    Refrain

Hebrews 9: 15-22 (New International Version)

15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. 16In the case of a will,[a] it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. 18This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood. 19When Moses had proclaimed every commandment of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people. 20He said, "This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep."[b] 21In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies.

(Key Verse)  22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

    Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

Hebrews 9:15-22 The solemn transactions between God and man, are sometimes called a covenant, here a testament, which is a willing deed of a person, bestowing legacies on such persons as are described, and it only takes effect upon his death. Thus Christ died, not only to obtain the blessings of salvation for us, but to give power to the disposal of them. All, by sin, were become guilty before God, had forfeited every thing that is good; but God, willing to show the greatness of his mercy, proclaimed a covenant of grace. Nothing could be clean to a sinner, not even his religious duties; except as his guilt was done away by the death of a sacrifice, of value sufficient for that end, and unless he continually depended upon it. May we ascribe all real good works to the same all-procuring cause, and offer our spiritual sacrifices as sprinkled with Christ's blood, and so purified from their defilement.

    Happy Grandparents Day!

    Posted in Holidays

Today we celebrated Grandparents Day after church.  It turned out really fun and nice.  The girls made this strawberry trifle. Yummy!  It was two angel foods cut up in bite size pieces.  Layered with vanilla pudding, fresh strawberries and raspberries, and then topped with Cool Whip!

We also had roasted  lemon rosemary chicken with roasted onions, garlic, artichoke hearts, and mushrooms and green beans and whole wheat french bread.

The girls made cards, pictures and certificates for their grandparents.  We also had some family tree forms for the girls to fill out to with their grandparents and hear some family history and some of their heritage.

My parents and my granddaddy live out of state and so for them we sent e-cards today and the girls are making special gifts including books and placemats!  The books we found were from www.enchantedlearning.com (search under grandparents)  Here is a description of the books:  A short book for early readers with phrases to finish, questions to answer, and pictures to draw.  We will be going to visit them soon and we are planning to do a grandparents lapbook when we are there.  I found it at www.currclick.com and it is listed under "Grandparents Interview Package".  Also, my mom is planning on doing the Sugar N' Spice unit study by Marmee Dear and Company with the girls when we go "home" over the holidays.  I am so excited about his unit study with Nana!http://www.theoldschoolhousestore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1269

We also will be reading about grandparents this month.  We are reading Through Grandpas Eyes by Patricia MccLahlan and Song and Dance Man by Karen Ackerman.

The website for the official Grandparents day is found at: www.grandparents-day.com .

Here is the site where we got most of our ideas for activities:

    http://www.education-world.com/a_lesson/lesson/lesson136.shtml

We also enjoyed Annie's Grandparents Day page at www.annieshomepage.com and we found the ecards at www.akidsheart.com .

But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon those that fear Him, and His righteousness unto children's children.  Psalm 103:17.

Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.  Proverbs 17:6

What's For Dinner Wednesday - Southern Bread Pudding with Bourbon Sauce

    Crockpot bread pudding:
I made this week for Sunday lunch.
This cinnamon and nutmeg spiced bread pudding is made in the slow cooker, with bread cubes, eggs, milk, and optional raisins.

    INGREDIENTS:

    • 4 cups French bread cubes, toasted (You can use loaf bread)
    • 2 1/2 cups milk, scalded, cooled slightly
    • 2 eggs, beaten
    • 3/4 cup sugar
    • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
    • dash nutmeg
    • dash salt
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 2 tablespoons melted butter
    • 1/2 cup raisins, optional
    • Bourbon sauce (recipe follows)

    PREPARATION:

Lightly butter the slow cooker then add bread cubes. In a small bowl, whisk together the scalded milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, vanilla, and melted butter. Pour milk mixture over the bread cubes then add raisins, if desired. Gently, using a large spoon or spatula, press bread cubes down into mixture so all bread pieces will soak up milk mixture. Do not stir. Cover and cook on LOW setting for 5 to 6 hours, until bread pudding is set.
You can top with a bourbon sauce to make it extra special!

    Bourbon Sauce

1 cup granulated sugar 6 tablespoons butter, melted ,1/2 cup buttermilk 1 tablespoon (or more!) Bourbon , 1/2 teaspoon baking soda ,1 tablespoon white corn syrup and 1 teaspoon vanilla .
In a sauce pan mix all ingredients. Bring to a boil for 1 minute. Serve warm.

    Our Nature Journal

    Posted in Homeschooling

Here is some of our work we did this week with our nature journal.  We are having issues getting our irrigation just right with our lawn.  Now we know we are over watering due to the large amount of mushrooms which appeared in the back yard.  But it made for a fun nature study.  The girls took their blankets, towels, papers, markers, pencils and notebooks out on the lawn and studied the mushrooms and then drew them for their nature journal.  I always have loved mushrooms...they are just so cute looking!

The next day one of our daughters spotted a large amount of tadpoles in a mud puddle near our house.  So early this morning, we all made our way out there and  collected some.  We have been researching the best way to care for them.  Hopefully, some will make it to frogs.  The poor other guys I guess will die when the mud puddle dries up which will be soon out in the AZ heat.

Here are some samples of their work.

Our worm compost system is coming along very nicely.  At the bottom is a spout where we can get the liquid worm compost fertilizer.  We used it on our rose bush this morning.  We have been recycling all of our glass jars by filling them with the "compost tea" and using it on all of our plants and sharing with neighbors.

This year we took the girls on a back to school "staycation".  I love the idea of the "staycation" and have been keeping my eye out for some really good deals around our city.  This turned out to be great!  The resorts around the Phoenix/Scottsdale area always drop their prices way down in the summer... usually between Memorial Day and Labor Day.  It seems it is soooooooooo hot here no one wants to visit in the summer?  This hotel has its own water park with a kiddie pool, wave pool, 3 water slides, lazy river, hot tub for 25!, pool for volleyball and basketball, a family pool and an adult pool and splash fountain pad!  Something for everyone!  We stayed a couple of nights and had a great time! The rooms were beautiful and very spacious.  We took a couple of coolers full of food and we ate out at the hotel two times.  Once for breakfast (The Phantom Horse) and once for lunch (poolside).  It was an affordable trip and really good time!  We counted up a total time of 24 hours at the water park...whew...I found these swim suits from Disney Outlet online.  They are great just as swim shirts or with the pants too!  If you don't live in AZ...this would be a fun family vacation in the summer at more of an affordable rate...check out www.arizonagrandresort.com .  The rates have gone back up now.  I had found a coupon in the www.azparenting.com magazine for $99 a night in the weekday.  There is also hiking, horseback riding, a halfday kids program at the hotel, a full size gym, a spa, and exercise classes.  We will defintely be going back!

    101 in 1001

    Posted in Daily Life

I saw this on Amy Blayliss' blog www.inpursuitofproverbs31.com She helped me design my blog and did a wonderful job!  I have been wanting to come up with my list for a couple of months now!

The following are the guidelines which I got from her site.  Please visit her at her blog.  She has a lot of interesting info and insight.

Creating your own 1001 Day Project

    The Mission:

Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

    The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

    Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as new year's resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.

    Some common goal setting tips:
    1. Be decisive. Know exactly what you want, why you want it, and how you plan to achieve it.

    2. Stay Focused. Any goal requires sustained focus from beginning to end. Constantly evaluate your progress.

    3. Welcome Failure. Frequently, very little is learned from a venture that did not experience failure in some form. Failure presents the opportunity to learn and makes the success more worthy.

    4. Write down your goals. It clarifies your thinking and reinforces your commitment.

    5. Keep your goals in sight. Review them frequently, and ensure that they are always at the forefront of your thinking.
