    Compost

    Posted in Daily Life

Some weeks we have more food scraps than our worm composting bin can handle and our garden has no more room to compost in it so....I had a friend that built this compost from pallets.

My father-in-law helped me today get some from a nursery and now we are going to try and build this.  It looks easy enough.

This is a great website for all kinds of things.

I will post pictures as soon as it is done!

    101 in 1001

    Posted in Daily Life

    Orginally posted August 29, 2009.

I saw this on Amy Blayliss' blog www.inpursuitofproverbs31.com She helped me design my blog and did a wonderful job!  I have been wanting to come up with my list for a couple of months now!

The following are the guidelines which I got from her site.  Please visit her at her blog.  She has a lot of interesting info and insight.

Creating your own 1001 Day Project
I started this list on August 24, 2008.  Here is what I have done so far....
    The Mission:

Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

    The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

    Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as new year's resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.

    Some common goal setting tips:
    1. Be decisive. Know exactly what you want, why you want it, and how you plan to achieve it.

    2. Stay Focused. Any goal requires sustained focus from beginning to end. Constantly evaluate your progress.

    3. Welcome Failure. Frequently, very little is learned from a venture that did not experience failure in some form. Failure presents the opportunity to learn and makes the success more worthy.

    4. Write down your goals. It clarifies your thinking and reinforces your commitment.

    5. Keep your goals in sight. Review them frequently, and ensure that they are always at the forefront of your thinking.

    Thank You Lord....

    Posted in Daily Life

    Thank You Lord…

    Lord, thank you for this sink of dirty dishes;
we have plenty of food to eat.

    Thank you for this pile of dirty, stinky laundry;
we have plenty of nice clothes to wear.

    And I would like to thank you, Lord, for those unmade beds;
they were so warm and comfortable last night.
I know that many have no bed.

My thanks to you, Lord, for this bathroom,
complete with all the splattered mirrors,
          soggy, grimy towels and dirty lavatory;
          they are so convenient.

Thank you for this finger-smudged refrigerator
          that needs cleaning.
It has served us faithfully for many years.
It is full of cold drinks and enough leftovers

          for two or three meals.

Thank you, Lord, for this oven that absolutely
           must be cleaned today;
It has baked so many things over the years.

The whole family is grateful for that tall grass
that we all enjoy the yard.
My kids are healthy and able to run and play.

Lord, the presence of all these chores awaiting me says
You have richly blessed my family.
I shall do them cheerfully and I shall do them gratefully.

Even though I clutch my blanket and growl
          when the alarm rings,
Thank you, Lord, that I can hear.

There are many who are deaf.

Even though I keep my eyes closed against the morning light
          as long as possible,
Thank you, Lord, that I can see. Many are blind.

Even though I huddle in my bed and put off rising,
Thank you, Lord, that I have the strength to rise.
There are many who are bedridden.

Even though our breakfast table never looks like
          the pictures in magazines
and the menu is at times not balanced,
There are many who are hungry.

    Thank you, Lord, for life.

    I am hearing...my middle daughter's audio tapes...Johnathan Parks...

Around the house....since I was working this weekend, my husband has the kitchen looking nice and clean and shiny...I have ALOT of packing to do.

    Birthday!

    Posted in Daily Life

We have ongoing birthdays around here that last for a few days or sometimes even weeks....and several parties!  Birthdays are so fun!  We always use the special birthday plate for the birthday girl!  We took our family and some friends to the Constitution Week festival on her actual birthday.  I had found this so CUTE bear in red, white, and blue to remind her of that fun day!  She loved it!  We also had grandma and grandpa over and older sisters' beau over for a birthday lunch on Sunday. It was very fun and we grilled steaks and had baked potatoes, marianated fresh veggies, french bread, and peach pie with vanilla ice cream.  It was all yummy!!!!!!!!!  For co-op the next day, she got to take her class chocolate chip cookies and more ice cream!  Since one of her sisters' birthday is so close to hers and they are 19 months apart, they usually share their friend birthday party.  It works out very well because they have many of the same friends and they can just have one big party (with two cakes)...one year we had Strawberry Shortcake and StarWars...hard to combine those two!  We usually have the party sometime between both their birthdays which is sometime in October....they are planning for a spend the night this year!  Hmmmm...we better get planning!

    Outside my window...a breeze...blue skies...white clouds...

I am thinking...of what I am going to do with the tadpoles that have turned into tiny toads.

I am thankful for my friends that are in our homeschool co-op and all the efforts everyone puts into teaching their classes.

From the kitchen...lots of peaches that still need be cut up and frozen.

I am wearing a brown and turquoise sundress and my gold colored flip flops with nails painted hot pink.

I am creating...a lesson plan for the elections that I will be teaching in our co-op next month.

I am going to my husband's fitness boot camp tonight and take my fitness test.

I am reading...my Bible (Acts) and Six Secrets to a Powerful Quiet Time by Catherine Martin

I am hoping....that my hives have gone away for good!

I am hearing...my youngest daughter playing "house" in her playroom.

Around the house....looking pretty good today!  We had family birthday party here yesterday.

One of my favorite things....homeade peach pie with vanilla ice cream (Bryers)

A few plans for the rest of the week...middle daugther starting sewing lessons this week.

    Dates with my husband!

I love to go out and just hang out with my husband.  We like to go on different type dates.  Sometimes out to eat...to our favorite restaurants...out for coffee and the bookstore...sometimes just for a ride...or a walk....sometimes stay in and watch a movie and eat in our room (our favorite foods...brie, green apples, boiled shrimp, stuffed mushrooms, dark chocolate with raspberries and strawberries...or to the grocery store or shopping...sometimes for lunch.......a picnic...to the gym for a yoga class together and then to the whirlpool and then for a healthy lunch or protein shake ..sometimes for overnight hotel dates...and about twice a year...weekend long dates.

I love books!  I love to read all kinds of books except for fiction.  I like to read my Bible, spiritual growth and development books, study books, homeschool books, history books, marriage books, magazines and nursing journals and books of encouragment.  Right now I am trying to rearrange my books and have piles all over the house. ugggh!  Check out my Shelfari for books that I am currently reading.  My Amazon Widget has some of my favorite homeschooling type books.

I love the beach!  I love the smell of the beach and the fresh air!  I love the heat and the water!  I love to see the girls playing along the edge.  I love to build sandcastles and to write our names in the sand.  I love to sit and look over the beach and relax and read.  I love the food around beach towns!  I love shrimp, oysters, crab, and fish!  I love to look for shells and to walk up and down the shore.  I love to hear the crashing waves!!!!

I love old country churches and old hymns.  I love outdoor picnics and researching old family cemeteries and family reunions.  I love Magnolias and beautiful flowers and remember every Memorial Day my grandmother would cut fresh flowers from her yard and cover the graves of our relatives and tell me about family stories.  I love the open windows and the old wooden benches.

I love coffee and tea!  I love to sip coffee in the morning with my husband.  I love fresh coffee beans and I love to go to Starbucks get a cafe' au lait before I go into work my nursing shift.  I have to have my coffee really HOT and really fresh or I can't drink it!  I also like to drink tea.  In the school year, the girls and I drink tea from our tea cup collection in the afternoons and I read to them.  It is a fun time.  We love to visit coffee houses and tea rooms.

Best Friends Forever - BFF - Camp Barnabas

    Posted in Daily Life

Last night we had our end of the year co-op  moms night out/planning meeting at a local Italian Eatery.  It was a lot of fun!  We have such a connected group of moms and it is such a blessing to be part of a group of like minded ladies.  There is so much talent and uniqueness and creativity and it is wonderful to just sit around and chat and share thoughts and ideas.  We had been publishing a co-op newsletter this past year with different students taking turns being editor and the other students and moms writing articles, news, poems etc... Somehow we went from planning that to planning a year book for our co-op.  The funny part about this was that we started reminiscing about our own year books and especially the autographs..."You are a nice girl! "  "Stay Sweet! " " BF4ever or BFF - best friends forever"

It so happened that I had just got off the phone before coming with my "BF4ever" from elementary school!!!  We are still wonderful friends all these years later.  I have found that not many people have a good solid friendship remaining from their elementary years!  We met in a funny way.  We were both on our way to a christian camp in MO...Camp Soaring Hawk...We were both from MS and our parents had driven us to Memphis, TN for the camp bus to pick us up.  I was going alone and did not know anyone.  My mom was worried about me and she happened to see a station wagon with some trunks in it that pulled into Krispy Kreme...we were heading to Krispy Kreme ourselves (ah...the good ole'days when we actually ate doughnuts)  and my mom asked them if they happened to be going to Camp Soaring Hawk.  They said "yes".  It was God's great providence working in our lives and we became BFFever...ever since...!!!!!!!!!  We share many, many memories together and have seen eachother go through joys and trails.  We lift each other up in prayer even though we rarely get to see eachother anymore and we are always there for eachother even when we don't have a chance to talk to eachother for weeks or months.  We ended up going to camp Soaring Hawk for years after that and we have remained friends now for almost 30 years!  Could that be possible??  We were laughing last night because one of our favorite college books is now listed in the "vintage" section.  I guess we are vintage now!

    New International Version (NIV)
    Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their work:

     10 If one falls down,
his friend can help him up.
But pity the man who falls
and has no one to help him up.

After we graduated from highschool, our most beloved camp was bought by a RN and her husband and they with God's help have turned into such a wonderful place.   It is now named Camp Barnabas  If you have or know of anyone with special need kids of any kind, this camp is a very amazing place.  It is a wonderful place for family or church missions as well.   www.campbarnabas.org .  Be sure to look at their promo video under the section (About Us) then (What We DO).  This camp continues to change the lives of so many people!  To God Be the Glory for the Thing He Has Done....

    Strawberry Yogurt Smoothies and Pops

    Posted in Daily Life
This is something we have been doing lately that is so fun and yummy.  We went to Target and bought some popsicles molds which we found in the summer section.  We have been using different juices and fruits to make some delicious popsicles.  We used Simply Limeade (no dyes or artifical ingredgients), Strawberry Lemonade from Fresh and Easy...yum...just like California Pizza, Lemonade Tea (one of my daughters always orders an Ice Tea snow cone when we go out for snow cones)...and now we are trying yogurt pops with pureed frut,  fudgesicles (choclate pudding and milk) and the possibilities are endless... Enjoy this great recipe I got from the Family Fun website.  Check them out at www.familyfun.com .
    Strawberry Yogurt Smoothies and Pops
    5 Stars

For a nutritious and easy after-school snack, serve up a round of these fruity shakes. Customize your smoothies to suit your children's tastes (you can omit the banana, for example, and add blueberries in its place). You can then freeze the smoothie into Popsicles that are fun to make and to eat.

KIDS COOKING SKILLS: Use this recipe as an opportunity to teach your children how to slice and puree fruit and how to operate a blender safely. Then use the Strawberry Pops recipe as an opportunity to teach your child how to make molded frozen treats.
    RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
    1/2 pint strawberries
    1 banana
2 8-oz. containers nonfat strawberry yogurt
    1 cup lowfat milk
    1. Ask your child to wash the fresh strawberries, hull them, and pat them dry. Peel the banana and slice it in half or in quarters, then place all the fruit in an electric blender.

    2. Spoon the yogurt into the blender, then pour in the milk. After sealing the lid, press the puree button and blend until smooth and thoroughly combined, about 1 to 2 minutes.

    3. Pour the shake into four 8-ounce glasses. For a creative presentation, have your child garnish each drink with a fruit kebob (a strawberry and banana slice threaded on a bamboo skewer) and a colorful plastic straw. Makes 32 ounces, or four 8-ounce shakes.

    4. TIP: An adult should always be present when children use a blender. Keep the blender away from water and make sure the lid is tightly shut before pressing the puree button.

    5. To make Frozen Strawberry Pops, pour smoothie mixture into a Popsicle mold or into small paper cups, cover with foil then insert a craft stick.

    6. Carefully pour the Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie mixture into a plastic Popsicle mold. Freeze for 4 to 6 hours. Dip the mold in warm water, then unmold the Popsicles. Makes 6 to 8 Popsicles.

    My first blog...

    Posted in Daily Life

I have finally taken the time to set up my blog.  I am hoping to have this as a place to relax and reflect on my days as a homeschooling mom and wife to my wonderful husband.  I hope it will be a way that I can stay connected with my friends and family.  It is starting to heat up in the desert in Arizona!  I am looking forward to a wonderful summer with my family even in the heat!  My husband and I started our vactioning a little early and went on a "24 hour" date.  It was so wonderful and much needed with our crazy, hectic schedules...first we started off at the gym/spa... then on we went for a movie and dinner.  We went to see Expelled (www.expelledthemovie.com ). It was great and I would recommend it highly.  It really reinforced a lot of my ideas of what is going on in America these days.  We decided to go to dinner Shabu Fondue...My husband is the ultimate in "tough guy"...so he was skeptical of course.  It was very fun and relaxing and he ended up having a great time.  You cook your own food in little fondue pots on a burner at your table.  It takes a while to get through all the courses so it gives lots of time to sit and chat.  There is another Fondue restaurant named the Melting Pot (www.meltingpot.com) that I actually liked a little better because you have your own little private booth with a curtain and the fondue is more swiss style than Japenese style.  We stayed overnight in a nearby city and went for breakfast and the bookstore (Barnes and Noble - one of my favorite places) and then back home to the real world.  Which is our favorite place to be...there's no place like home....
