Hollylooyah: A Homeschooling Adventure

• Oct. 3, 2006 - Literacy takes time and hard, hard work.

Sept. 25-30

What a fantastic week!  Both boys have been working on pre-reading, pre-writing skills, singing songs, listening to stories, playing computer games, playing with the neighborhood kids, making art (together even).  We had a really nice week.

Noah went potty 13 times !!!!!  Andy is learning to use words to say how he feels, how to ask for help, and to explain things to us instead of angry outbursts.

I have been reading some homeschooling books.  I would like to keep a bibliography for myself for future reference.

This year I have been using:

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons

The Big Book of Home Learning

Slow and Steady, Get Me Ready

What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know.

The Well Trained Mind:  A Guide to a Classical Education at Home

The Educated Child

More Charlotte Mason Education

The Ultimate Book of Homeschooing Ideas

Various Preschool Workbooks

I have been consulting Phonics Pathways

A set of Kindergarton prereading/reading textbooks and workbooks

A math set of textbooks and activities with manipulative cubes

Various children's books that I will posts as we use them:

So far we have used:

Today is Monday

The Big Sneeze

The Greedy Triangle

How Are You Peeling:  Foods With Moods

I Spy:  An Alphabet in Art

Pigs Will Be Pigs (this is a math book about money-- cute)

Books and CDs

Andy has listened to Part 1 of The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling

He is currently listening to Charlotte's Web by E.B. White

Noah is listening to Mary Engelbreits Mother Goose, 100 Best Loved Verses

The kids camped out in the back yard with Scott on Friday night and we went to the farmer's market on Saturday.  We had a great time at church on Sunday... Noah sat through the whole thing including coffee hour!  And then we went on a wonderful hayrack ride Sunday afternoon.  All in all a full week.

About Me

This is a journal of one families adventure into the crazy, mixed up, but amazing LIFE of homeschooling. You can see the fun, the difficulties, the personal story of a family homeschooling two wonderful boys-- one autistic six year old and one high energy preschooler. We've been to school and now we are returning home to see how we fare.
