2009 Spring Learning Fair Extravaganza for Homeschoolers Starts Mar. 20th

Greetings,

I am addressing this to interested participating families
and to teachers and instructors who may know children
and families who would like to participate in this type of
fair. The information is extremely time sensitive.

In the past, your family has expressed an interest or has
been involved in the Spring Learning Fair  Extravaganza
Due to timing and circumstances beyond my control, I've
finally worked out most of the details for this years and it is
truly a Spring Extravaganza as check in is on the first day
of Spring, Mar. 20th.

So please take a look at the information immediately and
give me a call if you have any questions.  All the details
are attached in a Word document.

In short.
Check in is on Friday, Mar. 20th from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm.
at the campus where I teach.

Bryant Campus is 910 N. Ash, Spokane, WA.  It is at the
Intersection of Ash and Broadway, within the tri-angle
between the entrance heading south off of Ash onto the
Maple Street bridge.  (Come West of Boone and turn left
- south onto Ash.  Go straight in the middle lane rather than
merging down onto the Maple Street bridge. You'll see the
school on your left and pass the gym and park in parking
lot to the south of School.  The gym is the 2nd or 3rd door
on the left as you come down the hall towards the office.

Judging is Monday, Mar. 23rd from
10:30 am to approx. 2:30 pm. Closed to the public.

The Fair is open to the public Tuesday, Mar. 24th
from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm.

The Cooking Contest portion of the Fair will be held
at Mount Spokane High School Home Ec Kitchens
from 3:30 pm till approximately 7:00 pm on this day
(3-24)  To enter this contest you must get your entries
in by March 17th...so read this information right away.

The Fair is open to the public Wednesday, Mar. 25th
from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The Sewing Contest and Style (Fashion modeling)
Review will be on this day from
approximately 9:30 am until completed
if we have participants interested in this event.

The ribbons and trophies will be distributed and
the Fair will close down at 5:00 pm.  Entries and
displays should be taken down and removed by 5:15pm

This is an abbreviated event this year as we are
not calling for blanket prizes and a public recital,
but should still be a great place for the kids to
display their items and projects, receive feed
back from a judge and get recognition for their
work by other people then just their immediate family.

Please  email me for complete information in a Word
Document  and send your questions and request to me at
LylaatHome@asisna.com

Thank you   Lyla Gray at H.O.M.E.

JOIN THE GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT
Count for Fun, Count for the Future
February 13-16, 2009

Nature fans throughout North America are invited to join tens of thousands of bird watchers for the 12th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), February 13-16, 2009.

A joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, this free event is an opportunity for families, students, and people of all ages to discover the wonders of nature in backyards, schoolyards, and local parks, and, at the same time, make an important contribution to conservation.

“Anyone who can identify even a few species can contribute to the body of knowledge that is used to inform conservation efforts to protect birds and biodiversity,” said Audubon Education Vice-President, Judy Braus.

Volunteers take part by counting birds for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the event and reporting their sightings online at www.birdcount.org. The data help researchers understand bird population trends across the continent, information that is critical for effective conservation. In 2008, participants submitted more than 85,000 checklists, a new record. “With more than a decade of data now in hand, the GBBC has documented striking changes in late-winter bird distributions,”said Cornell Lab of Ornithology director John Fitzpatrick.

Participants submit thousands of digital images for the GBBC photo contest each year. Last year’s winners have been chosen and are now posted on the web site. Participants are also invited to upload their bird videos to YouTube tagged “GBBC.” Some of them will also be featured on the GBBC web site. All participants will be entered in a drawing to win dozens of birding items, including stuffed birds, clocks, books, feeders, and more.

Businesses, schools, nature clubs, homeschoolers, 4-H groups, Scout troops, and other community organizations interested in the GBBC can contact the Cornell Lab of Ornithology at (800) 843-2473 (outside the U.S., call (607) 254-2473),  or Audubon at citizenscience@audubon.org or (215) 355-9588, Ext 16.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is made possible, in part, by support from Wild Birds Unlimited.

I'm Back from my Siesta!

Greetings Homeschoolers in the Inland Empire.
Between problems with dial up and being a way too
busy Homeschooling Mom of teenagers.  I'm here
again.  Sorry for being gone so long.

After quite a bit of work, we now have wireless- and it's a
bit easier to do work over the net.  We really didn't take a
siesta.  I've been in the middle of a bathroom remodel,
getting the wireless trench dug and coaxil cable laid just
barely before those big snows and then we were snowed
in a bit with those record snow falls....as big as the winter
of 1968-69, yes, I am that old (but just barely).  So I'll try to
let you know of a few events in the area of interest.
See you on the blog from time to time.   Lyla

Declaration of Intent Time! Message from WHO

The WHO office of Western Washington sent the following message as a reminder.

Remember to declare your intention to homeschool by filing your Declaration of Intent (DOI) form this fall! Declaring is an obligation of parents under the Home-based Instruction law. The DOI is to be filed with your local superintendent by
September 15th.

Remember, only include children ages 8 and older, and only include their name, age (not date of birth), and mark the one box only if you've chosen to qualify to homeschool by working with a certificated person to supervise your studies.

That's all that's required by law!

Parents often make our office aware when their school district's DOI is out of compliance with the law. Some districts ask or insist for more information than required in statute. Check out our sample of the correct DOI form  and our Declaration of Intent Education Packet.

We suggest that you make a photocopy of your completed DOI for times when you need it to demonstrate your status as homeschoolers (for instance, to get free Puyallup Fair tickets).
If you have any questions, feel free to contact WHO at 425-251-0439 or email at whocontact@washhomeschool.org. whocontact@washhomeschool.org

H.O.M.E. Sponsors Home day at the Interstate Fair, Sept. 8th

"Homeschoolers" Day at the Spokane Interstate Fair  IS....

Monday, Sept. 8th at 10:00am.  Meet back by the STA Gate

of Fair grounds (go to the far Southeast corner back where

the buses park) .

That gate is back by the old train and old tractors.

We've been granted 200 passes including parents and children.
Please don't abuse this by inviting your non-homeschooling
cousins, neighbors, etc. to come.

This is for parents who homeschool their child(ren).

Make a copy of the wristband for each member and put

clear tape over the top of it to keep the ink from running.

Write your contact name and number on the underside,

Where it can be accessed if a child gets lost, but strangers

can not see it.  Cover it with tape also to keep it from wearing

off.  Tape it on the wrist of each person in your party.

Go to the correct gate on the right date and time and

have fun at the Fair.

High-light and Copy Wristbands from below and paste into
a word processor document and print out on your printer at home.
Cut apart and  tape onto wrist.
We've found this to be the safest way to get our children to the fair.
Please don't enter the fair grounds until 10:00 am on Monday,
Sept. 8th, 2008

Flying on Mars  (Applying Algebra in Real Life)

To fly around on the surface of Mars, a traditional aircraft would need to travel at speeds of over 250 MPH just to stay aloft in the very thin atmosphere. New to Inland Empire With Testing Service

I'd like to introduce myself!  I'm new in the Spokane area.  Our family has been homeschooling since 1984.  We have nine children--four have graduated with homeschool diplomas and have gone on to college or careers.  I graduated from the University of Washington with a teaching degree in 1978. I began a home school testing service in 2000 in the Vancouver, WA area.  Now that we are living in Spokane, I would like to offer our testing service to home schooled families in the area.  Thank you for hearing my story!
