Our Homeschool Journey

May. 20, 2008 - Random thoughts . . .

So, here it is- almost the end of another year and I am already thinking about next year.  This year was a bit of a mess.  Hubby had some in's and out's at work.  I lost my part time job and with that came a loss of income.  We have been squeezing by on one income for two months now.  It is very tight but we are making it.  With our money situation all over the place I am wondering what I am going to do next year for curriculum.  We have been doing workbooks but that doe snot seem to be working so well for the kiddos.  I am thinking of going for a unit study approach.  I have looked at all different kinds of methods and I have not been able tosettle on one thing.  (Sigh!)  The hunt continues . . .

May. 20, 2008 - Unit Studies

Good luck with your search. Before homeschooling, I really thought I'd use a classical approach - lots of reading good books. My ds is almost 7 now and dd is 5 1/2. She is a very hands-on learner, so we knew we'd have to use something else. We found Weaver and are finishing our second year with it. It's published by Alpha Omega, has the Bible as it's foundation, with our social studies, science, creative writing, art projects and field trips coming out of what we're studying in the Bible. For example, when we were learning about the plagues in Exodus, we studied lice, the rotation and revolution of the sun and planets, learned about snakes and about how hail is formed. The Weaver suggests resources to use, but you are free to use whatever you can find - at your library, internet, etc.

That said, there are a lot of fun unit studies out there. I think you can probably even find some free ones to get your feet wet. (www.currclick.com possibly.) We're planning to do one on the Olympics during the summer.

Blessings to you as you make your decisions.
