This month (October) our theme in school is 'pumpkins' (how original LOL!!) I don't have time to do Specials and 'themed' stuff (since I want it to be a certain time during the day) I decided to "theme up our Specials" LOL So like I said, yesterday the 2nd graders assignment at the library was to look up some of the pumpkin books for me, and then pick their own book (that they are reading for BookIt) They did pretty good with this, a little slow since it was their first time, but yanno. So this is what we are doing (pics to come probably at the end of the month) (and the pumpkin unit we are using can be found at www.teachingheart.net/apumpkinunit.html) Monday- Library
-spend a few weeks learning how to look up books on their own by Title (I'll assign the books to look up- saves me some time ROFLOL)
-learn to find the book according to call#, along with learning the different types of call#s in the World of Discovery (that's our Kids 'wing' in the library...If you're not local, you will see the pics of our children's area....it's HUGE and just gorgeous).....we've already discussed the diff between fiction and non, and easy readers, early chapter, and the 'accelerated' section where they get their books)
-learn to find books by something other than title (author, subject, etc)
-learn to find the summaries in the catalogs, and maybe write 1-2 summaries down, so I know they are looking at the right thing (I can, of course, check this on my home computer for accuracy :) )
-understand the Dewey Decimal System, and it's importance in the entire library
-periodically, a 'scavenger hunt', where they will have a list from me of books to find according to whatever information I have given them.
so that's their assignment, and then they may check out a book. Usually this whole process takes about an hour.
Tuesday-Music
We will sing the songs from our Abeka song books, including our patriotic song, and this month, some Pumpkin songs (www.teachingheart.net/apumpkinunit.html)
Wednesday-Computers
We will do some online activities pertaining to pumpkins...there are many sites out there for 'carving pumpkins' online, decorating pumpkins, etc. Also, the usual assignments, such as www.abcya.com, www.starfall.com, and KidPix.
Thursday-PE
Nothing pumpkin related, but we are trying to get to different parks and play group games. When we move, we already have some sports equipment so we'll be able to play actual team games.
Friday-Art
Obviously, a pumpkin craft, or some sort of Fall craft, depending on the week.
Meanwhile, the rest of the stuff (mathematic stuff, the pumpkin glyphs, making words out of the letters in 'pumpkin', etc) will be incorporated either through lessons or (most likely) centers....as Friday is the only day we are having Centers.
