Questions for the Homeschooling Mom
Posted in Encouragement - 2
I saw these questions in an e-mail from The Imperfect Homeschooler recently and thought they were rather interesting. I hope it's okay to post them here on my blog. Feel free to leave a comment with your answers.
1) Which is your favorite subject to teach your children, and why?
2) Which is your least favorite subject to teach your children, and why?
3) Which subject (if any) do you fear the most, and why?
I look forward to your comments!

I have four boys.
My favorite thing in the whole world is teaching them to read and watching the light bulb moment when they get it and realize they read the word.
My least favorite subject is science, mainly because I have never enjoyed it.
I am not sure I am afraid to teach anything. If anything my fear would be of somehow not doing an adequate enough job of teaching. And or of successfully teaching them all my bad habits.

I have 3 boys.
My favorite subject to teach is U.S. History because I love our country and its heritage. I want my boys to have pride in their country. I also love teaching science because they love learning it!
My most dreaded subject, and theirs is Math.

1) Which is your favorite subject to teach your children, and why?
I enjoy our Bible studies the most because we can all learn and grow together. We do our devotional or some other Bible study first and it sets the right tone for the rest of the day.
2) Which is your least favorite subject to teach your children, and why?
Probably music. This subject is not a strong one for me.
3) Which subject (if any) do you fear the most, and why?
Advanced mathematics will be a challenge for me

We have three children (girl 6, boy 8, and boy 10) and have always homeschooled. My favorite subject is really a favorite activity. We read aloud and pray together as a family every night before bedtime. We've read missionary biographies, The Hardy Boys, Hank the Cowdog, Howard Pyle's King Arthur books, history, literature, you name it. This is my favorite part of "school" and still lasts 30 minutes to 1 1/2 hours each night.
The subject I least like is anything "schoolish" where they have to do table work. The boys, especially, don't enjoy it, and I have to be more of a task master than a participant in the learning process.
I don't think I fear any subject so much as I fear failing God. I know that God has called us to homeschool as a lifestyle. I need to learn more how to rest in Him, trust Him, and leave the results to Him.

October 9, 2007 - My Answers

Okay, I forgot to post my answers so here they are . . .
1) Which is your favorite subject to teach your children, and why? Reading -- I love to teach reading to little ones -- They seem to be so excited about learning to read and learn something new every day. It's just such an exciting and fun time!
2) Which is your least favorite subject to teach your children, and why? Writing -- I'm just no good at teaching this and have accepted the help of others in this area and think online classes are great when the kids are older!
3) Which subject (if any) do you fear the most, and why? I can't really say I fear any subject. There are so many homeschool-friendly materials available that kids can learn just about anything -- whether I'm teaching it to them or they are learning it on their own. This is a great time to be homeschooling!
