A book we enjoyed as a read-aloud a couple of years ago this time of year is Vinegar Boy by Alberta Hawse. "Abandoned by his parents and shunned by society, Vinegar Boy is certain he'll be adopted once Jesus removes the ugly birthmark that scars his cheek. But when he carries the drugged vinegar to a crucifixion, Vinegar Boy finds himself face to face with the only one who can heal his face. Is there still time for a miracle?" I highly recommend this book!
Thanks for sharing these books. I am always looking for recommended books so it was great to get a chance to read your suggestions.
Vinegar Boy looked very interesting but I was wondering if it was geared for jr/sr. high or if an upper elementary would be okay with it.

My kids were between the ages of 7 and 13 when we read it. They were all fine with it. I had to stop and do some explaining here and there with the younger two but they still seemed to get a lot out of it. I would think that older elementary would be fine. You might start it and if your child seems extra sensitive to it, wait and try it again at a later time. There were times when I would become emotional reading it because the author does such a good job helping you understand what it must have been like to live during the time of the crucifixion of Jesus.
