I began this blog to create an on going yearbook of our homeschool chronicling our highs & lows with photo's and journaling. Through the past few months I have really enjoyed getting to know so many homeschool moms and their families. Being a Homeschoolblogger has been both fun and encouraging. Please make yourself comfortable and enjoy getting to know us and how we learn at home!
I will be using The Happy Lion written by Louis Fatio for this weeks preschool class. This story is about a lion who escapes from his home in the zoo and walks around the streets of France.
As children arrive - teach this finger play:
Begin by holding up one hand with all five fingers extended. Tuck a finger into your palm each time a lion disappears.
Five Big Lions
FIVE big lions waiting at the door - ONE ran away; then there were four. FOUR big lions looking at the sea - ONE swam away; then there were three. THREE big lions going to the zoo - ONE joined the circus; then there were two. TWO big lions sleeping in the sun - ONE chased a monkey; then there was one. ONE big lion chasing you for fun - He got lost; then there were NONE!
1. Begin class by talking about two French terms: bonjour (hello) and au revoir (good-bye). Encourage the kids to practice on each other and then listen for them in the story.
2. Read the story and then ask the following questions: a. Why is the lion so happy? b. Why did the happly lion leave his home? c. Why are his friends so scared when they see him in the street? d. Could this really happen? e. What is your favorite part of the story?
4. Craft time - Lion face. I sketched a copy of the Happy Lion freehand and then copied one picture for each child. The kids will color the lion and then use brown pieces of (pre-cut) yarn to glue around his face for the mane.
5. During craft time, listen to polka music. (The Happy Lion enjoys listening to a polka band at the zoo. I borrowed a cassette from the library.)
6. Read a non-fiction story about lions, time permitting. I have chosen "Lions, King of the Beasts" by Amelie von Zumbusch.
7. Read a story about the zoo, time permitting. I have chosen "When We Went to the Zoo" by Jan Ormerod.
Thanks!

What a great little study. I will have to find that book and do that with my daughter. I vaguely remember it from my childhood.
