- What about Sick Days?

About Me

I began this blog to create an on going yearbook of our homeschool chronicling our highs & lows with photo's and journaling. Through the past few years I have really enjoyed getting to know so many homeschool moms and their families. Being a Homeschoolblogger has been both fun and encouraging. Please make yourself comfortable and enjoy getting to know us and how we learn at home!

What about Sick Days?

The Homeschool Memoirs topic this week is to talk about how we handle sick days during home schooling.

First off, it's perfectly fine to take sick days from home school!  It doesn't matter where you are being schooled - if your ill it's time to take a break!

At this point in our homeschooling each of the children are old enough to do at least some of their subjects on their own.  If I am the one that is sick I will have them work on whatever they can and just leave the rest until I feel up to it.   When they were younger (all elementary age or toddlers) we would just take the whole day off - with maybe the oldest doing some reading or whatever.   Often they are do pretty well if I am sick in bed (this is maybe once a year) - they will be real quiet and try to be helpful.

Now, if it's a child that is sick then he gets to stay in bed or curled up on the couch but the rest of us carry on with a pretty much normal day.  We have had to cancel plans because of a sick child but I'm sure you have too.  Since my oldest is now 16 (and a perfectly capable babysitter) I am past the days where I would have to tote everyone off to the Dr. office just for one sick child.  Even when they were little I was very blessed to have a mom or sister close by to watch the other little one if needed.

Last year my husband and then Kayla and Jordan all came down with the "real flu".  It was 5 -6  days of feverish, body ache, head ache, chest cold and down right wiped-out sickness.  They could barely keep their heads up! After about 3 days I started to get a bit antsy about them missing school -- this is NOT the time to be sick -- after all Spring was just around the corner! but they truely could not concentrate or do any type of work so we just had to wait it out.  It's part of God's plan but not MY plan!

All this to say I don't really have a "Plan B" when it comes to sick days.  I will just deal with day as the Lord gives it and try to be flexible.  We do take our Zinc and Echinacia when Fall comes to give our immunity a boost before all the germs come on full force!  It seems to keep our sickness to a minimum.
