Where In The WORLD Are We?

Jul. 24, 2008

Hang out day

Today we're just relaxing. We've seen all the tourist spots in this town. And there aren't many places to go. The movie theaters are all in Hindi. We are excited to take the kids to Kung Fu Panda and dh is dying to see Batman!

So, Ds8 and I are in the internet cafe and the rest of our family are swimming. We have to pay almost $10 for all of us to swim at our hotel every day. That can get expensive. But, it's common for hotels to charge for that here.

We went to McDonald's today (again)! We like it, but the staring can make me feel uncomfortable. I sometimes have to zone out and look out the window and forget that 20 people are staring at us while we eat. We have had to get used to this over the years. The kids don't even seem to notice it. My husband has learned that if he stares back, they will look away... I'm not that brave. I have to resist my strong urge to hide under the table!

Chris, those stares would certainly be uncomfy! I wonder if its how I feel when I go in public with my 5 children. We get a lot of stares, comments, whispers -- the kids notice it, we notice it. Of course at this point I'm over it and just smile and say, 'Yes, I'm blessed.' And when they ask a silly question -- like, ' You do realize how they all got here, right?' I reply,' Yes, but we are quite fond on that activity!' HA HA! And that usually shuts them up quick.
Anyway, I wondered if folks stare and whisper at you all. Do you speak the languages in all these countries? Or how do you manage that? Do they put you in that 'White Rich American' ( assuming this cuz your white ) category and hold that against you?
And the toilets -- I can't fathom going potty in a hole. I suppose that makes us even more grateful for our western potties. And yes, to potty train, what a chore! Do the kids find it odd to use these toilets or are they used to it after all these years? How long have you been traveling like this, I can't recall if you've mentioned it.

Enjoy your day!!

Are they not used to seeing tourists? Is it the curiosity about Americans? Or is it the the blond hair, blue eyed thing on 'my boys"? My daughter was passed around by several Japanese family's, in Hawaii, while they all snapped her picture. they loved her blond hair and blue eyes! Somewhere in Japan are photo albums of my daughter at 10 months! It was funny but I was on high alert at the time and I never left her side or took my eyes off the strangers. But to see them giggle and pass her around and take her picture was halarious.
