Where In The WORLD Are We? - Getting Ready

About Me:

We're a homeschooling family who loves to travel. My husband, Rob, works at a university and this has enabled us to see many different countries. We have 4 boys. They are Robby-11, Justin-10, Alex-7, and Connor-5. I write this blog from the perspective of a Catholic, American woman adjusting to living in Saudi Arabia. I know that other people have been curious about what it is like for a Western woman here. So, I am very honest in sharing my own experiences and feelings about it. Sometimes, I do get it wrong and I do appreciate comments if my perceptions are incorrect. One of the reasons I love living here is that I learn something new every day. I love answering questions too, so if you have any please feel free to leave a comment or email me.

Getting Ready

I'm not as ready to leave this time as I was last year. I am procrastinating and I don't know why. I do enjoy reading all the Lonely Planet books though and preparing for all the places I want to see and take pictures of. I love the Lonely Planet guides. We've bought so many over the years. I love how they now have itineraries that give you ideas about what places to visit. Last year, I had every detail planned out because of those and it worked out great. Even though, some people in the family thought it was too much. So, this year I am trying to keep from trying to go to many places, but it is so hard. There are so many cool places. Dh and I recently decided to add 2 more countries to our agenda. And then tonight we thought about adding another two more! Unfortunately, we have already bought nonrefundable airfare, so that won't work. But, we can delay the airfare and maybe get one more country in. We have a lot of factors to consider-safety, visas, and Ramadan. Ramadan will be here and we really want to be in a nonIslamic country during that time. It's very difficult for the kids then, because most restaurants are closed until the sun goes down during Ramadan. Plus, people are starving and gave up smoking, so they aren't very happy either. It's been something that we had to adjust to in Saudi. It's the number one reason I learned how to cook and menu plan. No one else to cook for us!

To plan for the trip I my plan from the Lonely Planet itineraries how long it will take us to explore the country and what cities we should visit. Then, the book tells you what you should see and how long to spend in each city. I love this! Of course, we can't do everything but it gives us a great idea about what places we want to see, where to eat, and sleep. It helps us when traveling with four kids to have an idea just in case we get caught late at night. I keep all these notes in a notebook so that it's easily accessible. It's hard to flip through a book when you are carrying two kids, a backpack, keeping an eye on two more kids, and keeping beggars at bay.

I've also been thinking about my photography. I love Digital Photography School site. It has helped me a lot. I love participating in the challenges and they offer great advice. It's helping me get ready for our trip. I can't wait!!
