Where In The WORLD Are We? - Making Pinatas

About Me:

We're a homeschooling family who loves to travel. My husband, Rob, works at a university and this has enabled us to see many different countries. We have 4 boys. They are Robby-11, Justin-10, Alex-7, and Connor-5. I write this blog from the perspective of a Catholic, American woman adjusting to living in Saudi Arabia. I know that other people have been curious about what it is like for a Western woman here. So, I am very honest in sharing my own experiences and feelings about it. Sometimes, I do get it wrong and I do appreciate comments if my perceptions are incorrect. One of the reasons I love living here is that I learn something new every day. I love answering questions too, so if you have any please feel free to leave a comment or email me.

Making Pinatas

Posted on Oct. 23, 2009 at 5:54 AM in Holidays

One thing about my boys is that sometimes they just surprise me. They get an idea in their head and then, there is no stopping them. When I woke up this morning, Robby was already wound up and ready to go. He wanted the craft glue so that he could make a pinata for the Halloween party on Thursday. I am impressed when he takes initiative like this. So, I looked up how to make the paper mache. It's really very easy. I don't know why I avoided doing this so much before. But, all they had to do was mix  2 cups flour and 3 cups water. Then, they dipped 1 inch pieces of newspaper in that mixture and then, put it all over their balloon, leaving a hole at the top. They will let that dry and then, repeat it tomorrow and on Sunday to make sure that it is strong. Then, they can decorate it on Wed., the night before the party. They did a great job.

This is Justin's, which is almost done. I had them do all this in the laundry room in hopes of containing the mess.

This is Robby's. They both did a really good job.

I'm really glad that we figured out how to do this. Pinatas are very hard to find here. I used to pay someone to do it for us, but she moved away. It's a lot easier than I had imagined and the boys loved doing it!! I can't wait to see the final product at the party. Everything is really coming together.

Oct. 24, 2009 Homeschooling in Saudi

Posted by Anonymous

Hi, I was very interested to read your blog. We are South Africans living in the UK at the moment with the possibility of my husband working in Saudi next year. We have always homeschooled and I would like to find out some more info about the legalities of living in and homeschooling in Saudi, Could you perhaps give us some info regarding that?
Thanks,
Illse
