Where In The WORLD Are We?

About Me:

We're a homeschooling family who loves to travel. My husband, Rob, works at a university and this has enabled us to see many different countries. We have 4 boys. They are Robby-11, Justin-10, Alex-7, and Connor-5. I write this blog from the perspective of a Catholic, American woman adjusting to living in Saudi Arabia. I know that other people have been curious about what it is like for a Western woman here. So, I am very honest in sharing my own experiences and feelings about it. Sometimes, I do get it wrong and I do appreciate comments if my perceptions are incorrect. One of the reasons I love living here is that I learn something new every day. I love answering questions too, so if you have any please feel free to leave a comment or email me.

Robby's Birthday

Posted on Nov. 12, 2009 at 6:32 AM in Birthdays

Robby turned 12 last week. The night before Halloween we bought him his present (a dsi). This was a big thing for us and we were so excited that we couldn't wait until his birthday. So, instead of me cooking all day like I was supposed to get ready for the party, we took him out to Pizza Company and Swensen's to give him his present. It was really great. He loved it that he got to have two parties in one day. Then, last week on his actual birthday we got to celebrate again. On the boys' birthdays they don't have to have school or do chores. Justin knew that Robby was going to have a day off, so we got all of his stuff done over the weekend so that he would be free too. Then, he did extra chores like crazy so that he could earn money so that he could buy Robby an ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins. I took them all out for Herfy's for lunch and Robby loved his little cake. It was a great time!

Birthday

Posted on Dec. 21, 2008 at 3:10 AM in Birthdays

My youngest turns five on Tuesday. We had his party on Thursday. We are very casual about birthdays since moving here. Muslims believe in celebrating each other every day, so some Muslims don't celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. It all depends on how strictly they follow their religion (just like Christians vary in their interpretations). So, we don't send out invitations to their birthday parties. We just ask the kids if they want to come and we keep it low key. All of my kids, friends are Muslims and we don't want to hurt any of our closest buddies. We don't expect any presents, we're just happy to have some of the kids join in. We enjoy hitting a pinata at every birthday too.

I tried out some jokes on my kids yesterday. During most of them, the kids just laughed to humor me. But, there were two that they genuinely liked:

What do monsters make with cars?

traffic jam

What do sheep like to do on a sunny day?

Have a baa-baa cue!

They definitely appreciated my little comedy act. The first thing they asked me this morning was if I was going to tell them more jokes.
