Where In The WORLD Are We?

About Me:

We're a homeschooling family who loves to travel. My husband, Rob, works at a university and this has enabled us to see many different countries. We have 4 boys. They are Robby-11, Justin-10, Alex-7, and Connor-5. I write this blog from the perspective of a Catholic, American woman adjusting to living in Saudi Arabia. I know that other people have been curious about what it is like for a Western woman here. So, I am very honest in sharing my own experiences and feelings about it. Sometimes, I do get it wrong and I do appreciate comments if my perceptions are incorrect. One of the reasons I love living here is that I learn something new every day. I love answering questions too, so if you have any please feel free to leave a comment or email me.

Beautiful Place

Posted on Aug. 13, 2009 at 8:36 AM in Egypt

This area is so nice and pretty much undiscovered by tourists. We are so lucky. But, in a few years I'm sure things will be much different. It's so nice!

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Can you see those mountains? That's Saudi. You don't know how much we've contemplated swimming there. However, it's highly frowned upon. Too bad. It's just so close!!! Photobucket Photobucket

Having a Great Time

Posted on Aug. 13, 2009 at 8:23 AM in Egypt

We love the different colors of rock in the mountains here. This vacation has really sparked an interest in us to do more mountain climbing and scuba diving. Did you know that after scuba diving you have to wait 24 hrs before mountain climbing or flying in an airplane?

Ds9 has a passion for mountain climbing and wants to be the youngest person to climb Mount Everest. The youngest person to climb Mt. Everest was a 15 year old Sherpa girl. We wondered why none of the tribal people from that area have broken that record and now I realize that it must be because any younger is too dangerous because of the development of their lungs. They have to wait to be older. We have decided to incorporate more climbing and hiking into our future vacations though.

Swimming Fun with Daddy

Photobucket Photobucket This was a sea water pool. Very cool. They empty every night and then, refill it in the morning with the water from the Gulf of Aqaba. More Pictures of Bedouin Camp

Posted on Aug. 12, 2009 at 6:17 AM in Egypt

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket The kids loved this camp. They never wanted to leave. But, I knew that dh had gotten us reservations for five days at a nice hotel and I couldn't wait to get there. The kids kept saying that they didn't get why I wanted to come here until they went scuba diving and played playstation. Now, they get it. To be honest though, I think that they are really cool for liking the simple life. I always wanted them to be comfortable sleeping anywhere. I didn't want them to be addicted to certain comforts. I want them to be capable of being happy anywhere. My kids were begging to stay at the Bedouin camp forever. I hope they always feel that happy enjoying nature and the simple side of life.

From Bedouin Camp to Luxurious Dahab

Posted on Aug. 12, 2009 at 3:43 AM in Egypt

Photobucket Ds11 and ds9 got to go scuba diving in the pool for the first time! They absolutely loved it. They offered it here for free. Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket The boys are crazy about scuba diving. It's something that we've looked into. But, all that is available to them now is a bubble course in the pool. We think we'll wait on it until they can get Padi certified. You have to be careful about little kids scuba diving because their lungs can only handle so much depth. Safety is the most important thing to us!! We're not risking their little lungs for anything. But, they are very anxious!! Photobucket Photobucket The little kids love the kids club here! More on Mt. Sinai

Posted on Aug. 9, 2009 at 10:48 AM in Egypt

Photobucket Photobucket This is St. Katherine's Monastery. It is a Unesco World Heritage Site. It is named after St. Katherine, a martyr. She was tortured on a spiked wheel and then, beheaded for her faith. It is believed that she was transported by angels away from the torture device and laid her on Egypt's highest peek which is Gebel Katarina (right next to Mt. Sinai). Monks found her body 300 years later and it had been perfectly perserved. Photobucket These are believed to be the descendants of the burning bush.

Mt. Sinai

Posted on Aug. 9, 2009 at 9:23 AM in Egypt

We got to see Mt. Sinai and this was a real treat. We were hoping to climb up it, but that was complicated.

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Most people climb Mt. Sinai at 3am in the morning in order to make it to the summit by sunrise. It's supposed to be very spiritual with everyone carrying torches in the dark.

Bedouin Camp

Posted on Aug. 8, 2009 at 3:03 PM in Egypt

We stayed in a bedouin camp. Very interesting. We smoked a sheesha:

Photobucket Photobucket The village at night. Photobucket The kids were so excited to stay in a bedouin camp. The slept in a tent. It wasn't exactly what I expected. The camp was built with foreigners in mind. The owner speaks perfect English. Photobucket The boys helped the owner make us some lemonade. It was delicious. Photobucket The mint tea was delicious, too. They drink hot tea out of glass on the side of the world. Photobucket The boys are in their happy place. Photobucket I'm glad that we are having this experience, but I feel a little more uncomfortable. I have a harder time trusting people. We met some people from Germany here and you can tell that they are exhausted from trying to figure out if they are being scammed or not. Cairo really wore on me for that reason. Here at the bedouin camp you can definitely tell that they are used to having foreigners here though. The sky looked beautiful. I have never seen so many stars. It is a very simple life here.
