Where In The WORLD Are We?

About Me:

We're a homeschooling family who loves to travel. My husband, Rob, works at a university and this has enabled us to see many different countries. We have 4 boys. They are Robby-11, Justin-10, Alex-7, and Connor-5. I write this blog from the perspective of a Catholic, American woman adjusting to living in Saudi Arabia. I know that other people have been curious about what it is like for a Western woman here. So, I am very honest in sharing my own experiences and feelings about it. Sometimes, I do get it wrong and I do appreciate comments if my perceptions are incorrect. One of the reasons I love living here is that I learn something new every day. I love answering questions too, so if you have any please feel free to leave a comment or email me.

Robby's Birthday Pics

Posted on Nov. 12, 2009 at 7:09 AM in Special Memories

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket I asked Robby what his favorite 11 year old memory was and of course, he said that it was going to America with his grandpa and Jeanne and seeing everybody. His second favorite was when his dad took him to Bahrain to see a movie on their last day of school last year. His worst memory was when he was grounded for a week in a half. Of course, neither of us could remember why he was grounded- probably chore related.

Here are some pics during his 12th year of life: Photobucket

Halloween in Saudi

Posted on Oct. 20, 2009 at 11:38 AM in Special Memories

Saudis don't celebrate Halloween. So, we have to be extra creative. Rob ordered some costumes a couple of weeks ago, but we're still waiting. Mail service is not the best here. When we were in Turkey, we decided to unload some of our things so that we didn't have to carry them around with us. Well, we sent it in July and we just got it last week. But, we're hoping. Either way we are planning on having a good Halloween. Rob and I went to Tamimi today and bought 2 big pumpkins. They were expensive (about $30 a piece). But, what's Halloween without a pumpkin? So, I make sure that I use it up completely. We eat the seeds and make pumpkin puree out of it. I love the Living on a Dime newsletter. It gives recipes for puree and instructions on how to cook the seeds. I had also picked up a small pumpkin for a game at the Halloween party we are going to have. We will use the small pumpkin for pumpkin bowling. I'm going to use empty 2 liter soda bottles, decorated with orange construction paper and let the kids roll the pumpkin and see how many "pins" they can knock down. My husband is going to email everyone in our compound and encourage them to have candy and leave their light on for the kids. I hope a lot of people participate. It should be a great time anyway. The important thing is that our boys know how hard we tried to make it a good Halloween for them. Also, we're going to use old ice cream containers that have the handle and decorate them with felt. I'm really looking forward to this. Robby doesn't think the containers are big enough. But, you can get quite a bit of candy in there. I really hope each boy doesn't eat all that candy. Either way, they can reload if they get that lucky.

A Great Trip

Posted on Sep. 11, 2009 at 9:30 AM in Special Memories

Robby and Justin are back! They had such a good time. They have so many stories. It was so good for them! I am really happy about it.

Here are some more pictures from their adventure: Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

I love this picture. It was taken in the airport right before they left. I can tell that they were all emotional about having to say goodbye. They have a lot of people who care about them and they are soooooo lucky!

I picked Robby and Justin up in Dubai. That airport is huge! It just seemed to go on for ever. It was a big difference compared to Riyad. Everything went great except that I didn't get to see my dad

Celebrating Mary's birthday gave us the chance to talk about the Mother of Jesus.

"And Mary said, 'My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my savior." Luke 1:47

You have a hole in your mouth, dear Connor, dear Connor,

You have a hole in your mouth, dear Connor, a hole!

I love mouths full of baby teeth. So cute! Here's some pictures of my little guys. They have had a lot of fun sleeping their tent downstairs while the big brothers are away. We're even considering moving out theirbeds and putting the tent upstairs. We'll see. Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

I bought them this puzzle on Amazon. They love putting it together. Alex has them memorized by the landmarks.

Connor Lost His First Tooth

Posted on Sep. 6, 2009 at 1:09 AM in Special Memories

This has been very exciting for us- our youngest losing his first tooth. It's been loose for awhile. We were in Egypt eating dinner and I looked at him and saw that it had a lighter color than the others. I said to him, "You have a loose tooth, Connor! The tooth fairy will come for you soon." He looked at me disgruntled and said, "I know that already!" But, he did get excited as it started to really wiggle and just hang there a couple of days ago. He got so impatient that he asked Rob to pull it out yesterday. It was exciting, but he didn't eat much after that. It must be weird for him having a hole in his mouth. I tried to get him to write a note to the tooth fairy, but he didn't go for that.

This caused Rob and I to think back on the other boys when they lost their first tooth. Because this seemed like the first one that we could just be excited about and make special.

Robby lost his first tooth while playing with friends in the ball pit on his fifth birthday. This was very stressful because it was accidently knocked out. He was crying. And friends had to dive down and find the tooth for him. And the staff brought him ice and ice cream later to make him feel better. His new tooth didn't come in until six months later since wasn't ready to come out.

Justin lost his tooth when he was four and we were visiting my sister at the time and I was totally unprepared. I remember searching my car late at night for change.

We didn't think that Alex was every going to lose a tooth. He just lost his first one a couple of months ago. We were sure that Connor was going to beat him in this area. We were even consulting dentists, we were concerned that he didn't have adult teeth. But, it appears that everything is fine.

Connor received three packs of gum (shared one with his brother) and 10 riyals which is almost $3. The tooth fairy usually gives 5 riyals. This is because the vending machine on the compound only takes ones or fives. The boys always want old fives because the machine doesn't take new ones. When I asked what the tooth fairy brought Connor, Alex said 10 riyals, but it's new!

Horse Riding

The two older boys have been having such a great time with their grandfather. They are really going to miss him and Jeanne!

We never knew how easy it is just having two children. And these two are such good friends. Have you ever known two brothers who wished they were siamese twins? I hope they will always be such good buddies.

Romance Dinner

Posted on Aug. 19, 2009 at 7:40 AM in Special Memories

For Valentine's Day, the kids made us a romantic dinner. They loved doing it and couldn't wait to do another one. We promised them that for our anniversary they could do it again. We had to go to the embassy (the boys have a special trip planned) and when we returned, we found this already made for us and everything. What a great presentation:

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket We loved how ds9 cut up the carrots. Photobucket We find this a lot here. It's a concentrated fruit drink. You put a little in a glass and add water. It lasts a long time. The stores are filled with these during Ramadan. And Ramadan is coming up... Lucky us. Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Dh helped them make this shrimp with garlic and butter. Lots of butter! Yummy!! Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket My favorite dessert is a Chocolate Meltdown from Applebees. The boys love recreating this for me. I accidently bought them brownies instead of cake this time though. But, it was delicous. Especially, with the little shark sprinkles on top. I love how they cut them into hearts for us. Very sweet and thoughtful!! We are very blessed! Also, the boys saw a show on tv. of a wedding where the couple danced and they've wanted to see us dance every since. We promised we would for our anniversary. So, we danced while ds11 played music for us on the piano. So lovely!! Ds9 took this picture of us: Photobucket

15 Reasons I Love My Husband After 15 Years

Posted on Aug. 17, 2009 at 4:01 AM in Special Memories

Today is our 15th anniversary. It is hard to believe!! It's been an amazing life for the last 15 years. I am very grateful to have such a wonderful man in my life.

1. We share the same faith and I love it that I have gotten to see his faith grow over the years.

2. He is a devoted father.

3. He would do absolutely anything for me to make me happy.

4. He asks me, "How can I make your life better?"

5. He has shown me the world.

6. He is very brave.

7. He is the smartest man I've ever met.

8. He's great at directions.

9. He knows how to ask for help.

10. He is direct when he speaks to people. If you really want to know the truth, you'll get it.

11. He doesn't care what the house looks like. He's very understanding about the messes.

12. It was his idea to home school. He was the only one (including me) who knew I could do it.

13. He knows what makes me happy.

14. He always wants to spend time with me.

15. He can't go to sleep if we've had a fight.

Actually, I could go on and on, but I said 15, so I will stop. But, I feel very lucky!! Thank you God for blessing me with a husband me who makes me a better person every day!
