I've Been Thinking

©2008 JoAnn

Lately I've been thinking a lot about what it is I really should be focusing on.  What is it I'm really being called to do.  I keep going back to a couple of things, homeschooling and children's ministry.  These are the things I'm really passionate about.  I enjoy teaching but I don't think this is the time in my life I should be doing it.  My family needs me at home and teaching at a school is very time consuming.  I may stay on as a substitute or in some other capacity.  I do know it will not be full time.  I gave notice before Christmas break that I will not be returning to teach math after the end of the school year.  I think that gives them plenty of time to try and find someone to replace me.

Besides I've missed quite a few days because of my body.  Which isn't fair to the students.  Unfortunately they don't have anyone to sub for my upper math classes.  Being stretched so thin has been causing havoc with me physically and emotionally.  My body can't seem to handle it and I'm the type of person that likes to give everything I do my 100%.  Which I keep falling short of because I don't have the time to give anything my 100%.  So I keep torturing myself emotionally. LOL  Therefore I've had to really stop and look at all the things I'm doing and decide which things I'm going to keep doing and which are going to stop.

So after this school year I'll be homeschooling the 3 younger ones again and focusing on the children's ministry at church.  Both of which I'm very excited about.  We've decided to go with the King's Kids program at church and drop Master Clubs.  And as a side affect I hope to have more time to blog again.  I've missed it.  I'll probably start with posting things we'll be using in our children's ministry.  I'm pretty big on keeping it fresh and active.  Besides that is what I've been working on the most right now.

Hope you all have a wonderful year!

I'm Still Living

©2008 JoAnn

Life has been very busy around our house.  So I thought I'd drop a note.  I'm teaching full time at the Christian School and still leading Master's Club on Weds. nights.  Were getting ready to do some major changes in our children's ministry.  I'm very excited about it.  I did coach our girls volleyball team for a while but I had to give that up.  It became too much.  The kids are doing great.  I can hardly believe I don't have any preschoolers anymore.  In 2 years I'll have one graduating.  It just don't seem possible.

I think this will be my last year teaching at the school.  I may sub but teaching fulltime is proving to be a little to hard on the old body.  Maybe when the kids are older I'll give it another shot but right now with dh going to school and working fulltime, and with what I'm doing it's getting pretty crazy around here.  Though it has been helpful with my oldest boy getting his license.   I just wish we had a car for him to drive.   Oh well someday.

The 2 oldest boys both got speaking parts in the Christmas play, so we've been busy with that also.  It's hard to believe its almost Christmas again.  I'm so not ready for it.  Usually I'm almost done with everything but this year I've barely begun.  I don't even have the tree up yet. LOL  I wish life would slow down a little so I could catch up.

Wishing you all a MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Bulletin Boards

Posted in My Ramblings

©2008 JoAnn

I thought I'd share some of the bulletin boards I've made for the Christian school.  I helped the English teacher out with his at the beginning of the year.  After all you can't have bare bulletin boards in a classroom.

Here's the one's for the English class  * Yes I Know Grammar is misspelled unfortunately I can not time-travel and change this board.

There was a word written on each flashlight.  The beams of the flashlight had synonyms written on them.  I tried to pick words kids tend to overuse.  I also had attached a sheet in the corner that explained what a thesaurus was and a synonym.  I must have took this picture before I put that up.

Here's the one I made for the Algebra class.  It's an interactive one.  Each student had a ship and had to sail to Genius Island.  There was a set of cards with math problems on them for each island.  They would pick which island they wanted to start on and then answer the questions for that island.  If they got 9 out of 10 right they could advance to the next island.  When they reached Genius Island and answered the questions for that one I had a small treat bag for them.  It contained some tootsie rolls, starburst, a little debbie snack, and gel pen.

I was going to post about the one I have up right now but apparently I haven't taken a picture of it yet.  Because I can't find it anywhere on my computer.  I guess you'll have to wait for that one.

It's a New Year

©2008 JoAnn

It's a new year and with every new year it makes you stop and think about the previous year.  This past year has been full and blessed!  It also makes me think about what I've been missing.  I really miss being active online and in the homeschool community.  I really enjoy sharing about our homeschool and seeing what others are up to in theirs.  So I've decided that is going to be put back on my priority list.  I'm going to blog at least once a week and get back in the swing of reading others' blogs.  I thought I'd start with giving you an overview of what I've been up to the last couple of months.

As you know I started teaching highschool math at our local Christian School this year and that has been going well.  It keeps me busy and has helped stay more consistent with grading.  I'm not sure if I'm going to continue doing it next year though.  I'll just have to pray about it.  I'm also the director of our church's Master Clubs program and teacher for the Ambassadors group.  This has been a learn by fire type of experience but has been such a blessing.  We are seeing steady growth with the club.  Our first night we had 17 and the night before we broke for Christmas break we had 39.  The kids seem to really be enjoying it and hopefully I'll get the hang of it running it soon. LOL  It's one of those things where I feel I'm always a couple of steps behind.

My sister got engaged in October.  They got married on December 20th.  I was the matron of honor for her and she kept me busy with all kinds of things. LOL  I helped her make the centerpieces and pew decorations.  I think I'm all crafted out for awhile.  The day of the wedding I woke up with a huge migraine and every time I moved my head I felt like I was going to pass out.  I made it throught the wedding and the reception formalities, then I went home to die. LOL  20 minutes before the ceremony started I went to attach the train to the dress to discover the hook things were broke.  I don't think I've ever sewed so fast in my life.  I sewed the train directly to the dress.  I remember starting to freak out when the music for the mothers started to play.  I was still back there sewing when I had to be walking down the isle in 2 minutes.  We got it done just in the nick of time and didn't delay the wedding. LOL  Then somehow between the church and the reception hall she managed to get mud all over the front of her dress.  At the reception I see my new bil frantically waving from the doorway for me.  So I get up from the table and go out to see what's up.  It was bad!  I did manage to get the majority off, so you couldn't really tell unless you were looking for it.  Overall it went well and no one was the wiser.

In November my oven, dryer, and dishwasher decided to start misbehaving.  The oven completely quit working.  The dishwasher wasn't cleaning the dishes and the dryer kept putting holes in my daughters clothes.  Her clothes kept getting caught between the drum and door.  When I would try to get them out they would get a hole.  Then one of my kids dropped the toaster and broke it.  My waffle maker also decided to puke.  November was not a very good month.  Oh I almost forgot 2 of the van tires went bad also.  One got a hole and kept going flat.  The other was so bad that it was causing the van to shake horribly when you drove.  But in the midst of all this was some huge blessings!

I went to my pastor just to talk and get some encouragement.  Not only was everything breaking but I was having other problems too.  I didn't know how much more of this I could take.   I just needed to talk to someone that would give me some sound Godly advice.  Well later that night the assistant pastor showed up at my house with a new to me oven and dryer.  I was speechless.  I couldn't hardly talk because I was afraid I'd burst out crying.  I hadn't even thought about them helping in this way.  I was completely blessed!

My husband was also mandated plenty of overtime so we could afford to buy 4 new tires for the van.  He also managed to find out what was wrong with the dishwasher and fix it.  I tell you I'm spoiled!  I really missed that dishwasher.  For Christmas I received a new toaster and waffle maker.  All is right with the world again.  Also most of the other things have been resolved.

The last couple of weeks I've been off from school, so I've been busy trying to get my house in order.  It has gotten way out of control over the last several months.  It was getting so overwhelming I hated being here.  Over Christmas break I finally snapped and decided to start going through every room and getting rid of things.  My thought is we simply have to get rid of the excess to make managing the house easier.  We live in a small home and it seemed like it was bursting with things.  I couldn't seem to keep up with the chaos and clutter.  I've been going through every room over break ruthlessly. LOL  So far I've sent 9 garbage bags and 2 boxes of stuff to the Goodwill.  Threw out some old furniture that has been sitting in the basement and 8 bags of trash.  I told dh that by the time I'm done he may just have to make a run to the dump.  So far I've gone through the kids' bedrooms, laundry room, kitchen, living room, and one room in the basement.  I still have to finish the master bedroom and school room.  The rooms that are done though feel so great to go into.  I'll wait on the garage until spring when it is warmer outside because it's not heated. LOL  I did tell the kids that if they can't help keep things picked up then I was going to get rid of more stuff.  I have to keep the house more managable.  It makes me very cranky when my house is out of order.

Well that's it for now.  I'll blog later about what the kids are up to.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

Nearly Free Homeschooling

©2008 JoAnn

If you remember me telling you about a site I was creating, well I think I've got a pretty good start on it.  So I'm going to go ahead and release it.  It's still a work in progress and will be changing as I get the time.  It is basically a consolidation of my blogs and group.  I think it will be easier for everyone to find things.

This and That

©2008 JoAnn

Boy it's been awhile since I posted!  It's been super busy around here.  My oldest on the highschool soccer team.  The team is starting to look pretty good.  Next year should be great!  Most of the guys had never played before so you can imagine how the team is doing. LOL  I will say though the last game I watched they really are looking like a team finally.  They only lost by one point.  Some of the girls in my math classes are on the girls volleyball team and had been asking me to come watch.  So I made it to a few games this last week to cheer them on.  I use to play volleyball in highschool so it was fun watching and the girls seem to appreciate it.

Boy scouts has started and Peewee is participating this year instead of playing soccer.  We also joined a homeschool group that meets for field trips and just socializing.  I also have a friend who is homeschooling her son and we are going to do some field trips with them.  Just as soon as I plan some that is. LOL  It has kind of been on the back burner lately but I need to get busy on that.

Master clubs has started and this year all 3 of my younger kids are in it.  Oh and I'm the director this year.  By the way that title really makes me feel uncomfortable.  I think of myself as more of just organizing it.  I find it kind of funny that I keep getting put into these leader type positions when I'm much more content being the wall flower.  I tell if it wasn't for God I could never do any of this.  Just thinking about getting in front of all those kids and adult helpers makes me want to vomit.  Amazingly though when I'm up there talking to and leading the kids, it just melts away.  After the first night the pastor told me I would have never thought you were so outgoing when I first met you.  I just laughed and said I'm not.  And honestly I'm not.  It is totally God's doing.  He's the outgoing one.  I'm just blessed that He has chosen to use me and give me the ability to do it.  He really does work miracles when we submit to His will!  I did tell the pastor that he was stuck with me until God said otherwise. LOL  Please pray for the children's Master Clubs ministry.  That God uses it to help bring these kids and families to the Lord.  My heart's desire is for these kids to see Jesus and His love for them through me and the other adults.

The math classes have been moving along well.  We've had a few bumps that have caused me to put on the mean teacher hat.  Which I absolutely hate doing.  See I have a few students who don't seem to think its necessary to do their homework, so I had to get stern.  Monday when I asked for their homework from Friday and they told me it wasn't done, I made them sit at their desk in complete silence and write "I will do my math homework" 200 times.  I then told them that each time they didn't do their homework I would double the amount of times they wrote it.  Today they had all their undone homework done and ready to turn in.   Word seem to get around about the punishment too.  I don't think I'll be having that problem much anymore. LOL  See I'm pretty lax in my class.  I let them chat some as long as the work is getting done and their not talking when I'm talking.  I also let them help each other when I'm busy with another student.  Overall the kids have been doing great, but I guess you'll always have a few that try and push the limits.  I also set up a rewards system for them, where they can earn a giant Hersey bar.  Everyday they do their homework, participate in class, have a positive attitude, pass a test, or help a fellow student, they earn an uno card (for each they do).  Each card is worth a certain amount of points.  When they reach 200 points they get the candy bar.  Of course if they do the opposite of these they loose a card.  Oh and if anyone dares utters the words "I can't" or "I'm stupid" they loose 2 cards.  This is a huge pet peeve of mine. LOL

I also have an interactive bulletin board for them to do.  I call it the "Equation Odyssey" There is a series of islands with different math terms as the names and the final island "Genius Island".  Each island has a stack of 6 math cards with problems on them for them to do.  They have to work the problems and get at least 5 right before they can move to the next island.  Oh and they each have a ship to sail.   When they reach "Genius Island" I have a prize bag for them.  The hitch is they can only play the game if they have their work done for the day.  This way they are getting extra practice over the concepts were learning.  Each class has a set of cards appropriate for what they are learning to make it fair.  I'll have to take a picture so you can all see it.

Well I have to get grading a stack of papers, so I'll talk to you all later.

Storing Convenience mixes

©2008 JoAnn

Someone asked so I thought I'd share how I store all those mixes.  The best way is to just show ya.

These are what I use to hold the bags of mixes.  I put an index card on the outside of some with instructions on how to make it when I'm ready.  I use to use brown lunch bags with the recipe written on the outside but it just kept making my cupboard look messy.  I also use these to hold things that come in bags.  For my homemade biscuit mix I use a large ice cream bucket to store it and I keep it next to the baking supplies.  I found these at the Dollar General.  They don't exactly match my kitchen but they serve their purpose well.

Convenience mixes

©2008 JoAnn

Well I've been making up mixes this weekend when I had time.  Therefore I thought I'd share some of the ones I made this weekend with you all.   You can take just about any recipe and make it into a convenience mix for yourself.

Muffins

In large bag combine these ingredients

4 cups flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 sugar
1 cup dry milk
1/4 cup baking powder
2 tsp. salt
1 Tbsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cloves

After they are mixed well measure 2 cups of mix into ziploc bags.

To make muffins add (per bag)

2/3 cups water
1 egg
1/4 cup oil

Stir until just mixed and bake 10-15 minutes in greased or lined muffin tin at 400 degrees.  You can easily add some raisins or put a teaspoon of jam on top of batter before baking.  I've also added applesauce or diced apples.  Just adjust the water so there not to soupy.

Waffles

In ziploc bag add these ingredients

1 cup flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
3 Tbsp. baking powder
1 Tbsp. salt
1/4 cup sugar

To make dump one bag in a bowl and stir the dry ingredients to mix.  Then add

2 eggs
1 cup milk
1/4 cup dried fruit or 1/2 cup chopped fresh fruit (optional)

Mix well and use waffle maker to cook.  Makes about 8.

Pancakes

In ziploc bag combine these ingredients

1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
4 Tbsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt

To make add

2 eggs
2 cups milk
4 Tbsp. oil

Then cook them up.

I also did rice mixes and you can get those recipes off of Hillbilly Housewife

Tomorrow I'm making biscuit mix, bread, pumpkin bread,  granola bars, and I think I'll try my hand at some yogurt.

A Quick Update

©2008 JoAnn

I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm still here and the family is doing great.  Life has been very hectic the last couple of months so something had to give.  Unfortunately it turned out to be my blog.  The 3 boys all played soccer this year and the 2 oldest played baseball.  Soccer is over but baseball is still going through the end of the month.  We had VBS a couple of weeks ago.  It went wonderfully but required a lot of my time.  I've also been involved in a few different things at church that are requiring a bit of my time.  We took our family vacation about a week ago and had a wonderful time.  I'll write up a post about it soon.

My kids have made some new friends and we've been spending a lot of time with them also.   It's been great spending time with them and forging new friendships.

There has been some changes around here.  I'll tell you about them when I have time to explain them better.  I will say though that I do believe this is God's plan for us at this time.  I have a ton to share with you all and I can't wait.  But I have a few other obligations to take care of before I return, that I've been pushing to the back burner.

Well that's all for now.  I hope you are all having a wonderful summer.

http://books.google.com/books?id=lXUAAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=...#PPA91,M1

I’m making a workbook to go with this textbook that will include some notebooking pages, geography activities, and hands-on things.

Science

Elementary Life Science (I’m making a few adjustments to this to make it a little more meaty for him but it is a really good spine)

We’ll also be reading aloud from these with the other kids: Stories of birds

http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/20547

Child’s book of water birds

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/17365/17365-h/17365-h.htm

The History of Insects

http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/10834

The Insect Folk

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/18790/18790-h/18790-h.htm

I also printed some pages from these “coloring books” to go with our stories: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/schoolyard/T_Resouces/ColoringBook.pdf

http://www.west-ext.com/fun-stuff/colorbook.pdf

and a few things from Enchanted Learning on insects.

Bible/Character Studies

Pondering Proverbs, Studies in Daniel, Daily Nuggets from The Gospel of John, and Them Parables of the Lord from this site.

http://www.bibletalk.net/books/classbooks.html

We’ll do these together.

MIW over at Sheltered Not Shattered tagged me with some interesting questions so I thought I'd play along.

What are our goals for our children?

  1. That they be confident in what they believe
  2. To love learning and learn that learning is a life long process
  3. Have strong faith in God
  4. Be productive citizens
  5. To be good fathers, mother, wife, and husbands
  6. Have a strong foundation in the basics: reading, writing, and arithmetic
  7. To have a respect and understanding of God’s creation
  8. To have the skills necessary to take care of themselves
  9. To have a heart tender to God’s direction for their lives.
  10. To have an understanding of the world’s beliefs so they are better equipped to deal with them
  11. To have strong morals and character
  12. A well-rounded education including: technology, foreign language, science, history, math, language arts, life skills, music, and art

How do you think learning should happen?

Learning to me is a constant part of our lives it is woven into everything we do and experience.  I think learning should happen through books, life experiences, hands-on activities, field trips, and watching mom and dad.  Learning can not be contained in just a textbook between certain hours of the day; it is something that is always happening.  Children learn from the people they are around, the TV shows they watch, and the things they interact with.  The education can be negative or positive.  I think it is the parent’s responsibility to be diligent in supervising and participating in what their children are learning.   I’m not a shelter them type of person.  I’m more of expose them to things within reason, discuss it, and help prepare them for adulthood.  I try to keep the ultimate goal in mind: that they will grow up and leave my home someday.  I want them to be prepared.

Do you want to teach your children together or individually?

Well it depends on the subject.  My children vary in age from 3 to 14 so some subjects cannot be taught together.  But I do teach some things together and have them do different levels of the same topic.  I like to combine history, science, Bible, art, and some language arts.   I just expect different results from the child according to their age and capability.   Math and reading is something they do individually as there abilities are quite varied.   They participate in each others subjects often without any prompting.  This is kind of a hard question for me.  I write the kids’ lessons individually but they tend to cover the same topics.  I guess it is a combination of both.  We’ve seem to have found a nice balance that works for us.

How much time do you want (or are able) to work directly with your children?

I aim for 3 to 4 hours a day.  Some of this time is divided for individual instruction and some for group activities.  But honestly I have one kid or another working with me on various things throughout the day.  I can hardly do any household things without “help”. LOL

Do you want to include real books and field trips into your school program?

Definitely I think they are essential.

Do you use a set schedule or flexible approach to your school day?

We don’t really have a set schedule.  We have more of a routine to our days.  I’ve tried the rigid schedule and it made us miserable.  I’ve also tried a super relaxed schedule but it didn’t feel like we were getting much done.  Our days have a certain flow to them with a few things that do have a time assigned.  I think having a routine has helped the kids to know what comes next and we get more accomplished that way.

Do you prefer a curriculum that is thoroughly laid out, one with just an outline, or do you make your own?

I can’t stand a thoroughly laid out curriculum. LOL  On the rare occasion that I buy one I rarely stick to the way it is laid out.  I use it more as a guide.  I prefer to put my own together, drawing from various resources.  I like to include lots of literature and hands-on activities.  I use a wide variety of things.  We use some textbooks, lapbooks, unit studies, videos, computer games, literature, field trips, experiments, and nature study.  We are very eclectic.

How much confidence and experience do you have homeschooling?

I’ve been homeschooling for 6 years.  I’ve grown more confident with our homeschooling as time has progressed.  I will admit there is times when I question myself but that is usually during a difficult time.  I think I’ve grown more confident as I become more convinced this is the thing that is best for my kids and I see how much they have learned.

Why did your family decide to homeschool?

Well I started out sending my oldest to public school but after watching how his attitude started changing towards his family and the joy of learning evaporate, amongst other things.  We tried a private Christian school.  He did well but they raised the tuition and we couldn’t afford it.  Then we decided to homeschool.  The main reasons we homeschool is because when he was in public school he suddenly didn’t want to play with his brother anymore, he thought mom and dad were stupid, and he was learning morals and character traits that were contrary to our beliefs.  A few statements made during that time that really still stick out to me is; “He’s too young to play with”, “Santa is real, because my teacher said so”, “if you punish me I’ll tell my teacher and she’ll call the cops on you”.  In that short time they had managed to convince my child that I had no say over what he did, that Santa was the reason for Christmas, and that playing with his little brother was uncool.  Needless to say those things didn’t sit well with us.  Then at a parent teacher conference I found out that he had not done an assignment for 7 weeks and had stayed in side for recess because of it.  The thing that really upset me about this is I would constantly ask the teacher how he was doing and she would always say fine.  There are lots of other things we experienced during this time but it would take forever to write about it.  I also don’t want to turn this post into a public school bashing post.  I’m sure some kids excel in public school and there are some great teachers out there.  Unfortunately not in my district.

How was your choice received by family and friends?

There was and is quite the range of responses to our choice.  My mom and dad are very supportive and have been from the beginning.  My sister was leery in the beginning but is now very supportive of our decision.  My brother and sil think we should put our kids in public school so they can play on the sport’s team.   Mil thinks we are doing our kids a disservice by not letting them “socialize” in public school.  I do have a few that ask every time they see us, “Are you going to put your kids in school, yet?”  The rest don’t really say anything about it.

What are your thoughts on academic or personal progress or achievement in your homeschool, including general results of any testing or evaluation, special recognition or experiences?

I’m pleased with the overall progress of our homeschool.  There are things I would like to improve of course but we are working on them.  The kids have always done well with their evaluations.  I’ve only taking them for testing once and honestly I don’t remember the results.  I know they were good but I couldn’t give you the scores.  I don’t really rely on that stuff to tell me how they’re doing.  I use to when we started out.  I look more to see if they have absorbed what they have learned now.  I’d rather take it slow and make sure they have a good grasp of the subject than pushing through to meet some superficial measurement of knowledge.

What do you most enjoy about homeschooling?

Being there for all their first.  Seeing that light bulb moment when they finally get it.  That is the best.  Especially if it something we’ve been working on for a long time.  Just this year my little guy just couldn’t seem to remember the number 4 when counting, we worked and worked on it.  Then one day when counting he remembered it.  I got so excited I jumped up and started cheering him.  Which he just ate up and it seemed to cement it with him.  Now he goes around counting for everyone.  Those are the moments that keep me going when I get discouraged.

What do you find most challenging about homeschooling?

I’d have to say it is dealing with the constant questions and the kids constantly following me around telling me everything they learned.  Don’t get me wrong, I love that they are so excited and eager to learn but it does get daunting some times.  When I say constant I’m not exaggerating.  I seem to have one kid or another following me around talking.  I have an introvert type personality and function best when I can have some quite thinking time.  In order to deal with this I try to get up an hour or so before the kids and I go to bed about an hour after them.  I’m much more pleasant that way.

What do your children like most, and least, about homeschooling?

Pumpkin – most: we get done faster with schoolwork and not listen to a teacher lecture all day.  How we get to meet lots of different people.  Least: it’s harder because you expect more from us and I can’t play highschool football.

Peewee – most: that we actually get asked about what we want to learn.  That we get to go on more field trips and see more things.  Least: that the little people keep interrupting when I’m trying to do school.

Today's nature walk

©2008 JoAnn

* I have a correction to make to this post as my 9yr. old son pointed out.  That is not a frog.  It is the American Toad.  You can find out more about it here.

Today it actually hit 80 degrees!  It's the first time it has been so nice outside.  There was just a slight breeze.  Of course we had to take a nature walk.  I'm so glad we did.  We got to watch some things that were very cool.

Signs of spring abound!  Tree buds.

Flowers in bloom

Frogs

Frogs making mating calls

And the coolest thing of all - frogs mating and laying eggs

This was just too cool to watch especially because we had just studied frogs at the beginning of the year.  The boys were totally fascinated.  Ah the joys of homeschooling.

Peanut turned 5!

©2008 JoAnn

My little man turned 5 last week.  We had some family over to celebrate.  We did a candyland theme.  I thought I'd share a couple photos from the day.  His 2 favorite things: the cake and a power rangers costume.

We eventually had to pry the costume off him at bedtime. LOL  He had fun.  I think he liked the cake because of all the candy on it. LOL  He keeps asking when I'm going to make another birthday cake for him.  The fact that you only get one birthday a year doesn't seem to be sinking in. LOL

What I've been up to

©2008 JoAnn

I know your all dying to know why I haven’t been posting or commenting on blogs much lately.  LOL  Besides the kitchen remodel, I’m building a website.  Well and the other usual stuff like laundry, schooling, housework, and so on.  I’ve been feeling stretched a little thin with the different groups and blogs, so I decided to consolidate.  My hope is by concentrating my energy on one project, I’ll have more free time.  My heart’s desire is to help other people be able to afford to homeschool.  With the way the education system is I’m sure there are people out there that would like an alternative but think it will cost too much.  Of course, I want to help current homeschoolers too.

It took me awhile to find a free host that didn’t have a ton of pop-ups and other ads all over it.  My hope is to eventually move it to a better domain that has more bandwidth and better features.  Unfortunately that cost money.  As I was contemplating what to do about that, I had a few companies contact me about becoming an affiliate.  After looking through what products they offer and the price of those products, I’ve chosen a few that I feel are good.  I also declined a few.  I don’t want to advertise something I wouldn’t use myself.  I feel by placing there ad on my site I’m giving it a stamp of approval.  So that is one way I’m going to help finance the move.

Another way is by offering some products I make for a small fee.  I’m thinking $10 or less depending on the size and amount of work I put into it.  Of course these will be better than the free stuff I make as they will be paid for.  I bought a really cool program to help with this.  All the funds generated will be to help maintain and upgrade the site.  My hope is to make it a fantastic resource for homeschoolers by providing an array of services and materials.  I guess I’m telling you this because I don’t want you to think I’m doing it to just make money.

Well there you have it.  That is what I’ve been doing.  I’ll post the link to the site as soon as I’m satisfied with it and I’ve finished putting all the pages together.

Have a blessed day!

JoAnn

Unit Studies

©2008 JoAnn

I posted all the links I have organized so far for unit studies over on my other blog.  I have also posted a list of literature guides over there.  It is just easier to post really long list over there.  I can just copy and paste it into the entry.  I can also do it all in one post instead of a bunch of small ones.  So you can go here to see both list.  Homeschooling on a Budget  sorry to make you hop around like that.
