Our 25 Days of Christmas

Posted in Christmas

We do what I like to call the 25 days of Christmas.  Everyday we do some activities related to Christmas.  I like to use this time to make homemade gifts with the children and read stories.  Sometimes we do just fun things and sometimes we do lessons but I always try to put the emphasis on Christ and giving.  This also gives the kids a chance to make Christmas presents for people and help mom put gift baskets together.  So this is our plan for the 25 days of Christmas.

Dec. 1st – start our Christmas Story Book.  There is a page for everyday that they color and has a scripture on it that tells the Story of Christmas.  We’ll do one everyday and add it to a notebook then read it on Christmas morning before opening gifts.  We’ll also read Christmas Facts and Fiction.

My kids love doing crossword puzzles and I found this one for them to do.

Then we’ll make a few homemade Christmas cards to send out.

Dec. 2nd – Today we’ll make picture frames for our gift baskets and I’ll print out some photos to put in them of the kids.  I got inspiration for the frames from here.  But I think we’ll skip the screen and hot glue some fun things on them.  The things we glue on will probably depend on whom it is meant for.

Then we’ll start reading a Christmas Carol.  I found it online for free here.

I also found a unit study at Homeschoolestore.com for $3.50 that I’m going to use with it.

Dec. 3rd – Don’t forget to color your page for the Christmas Story Book.

Read chapter 2 in A Christmas Carol.

Decorate a Christmas tree for the birds.

Dec. 4th – Today we are going to make festive napkin rings for the cloth napkins we will be making.  Read Chapter 3 in A Christmas Carol.

Dec. 5th – Now we are going to make our cloth napkins.  I picked up some fabric on clearance this summer that I think would make nice napkins.  This will also be a good project for the boys to practice their sewing skills on.  (Yes I made my boys learn to sew)

Read chapter 4 of A Christmas Carol.

The guys will then do this Christmas word search I found.

Dec. 6th – Finish up reading A Christmas Carol.  That evening we will watch the movie and enjoy some popcorn and cocoa.

We are also going to do this Science lesson and make some play dough ornaments to give away (hopefully).

Then to sneak a writing assignment in I’m going to have them use this story starter “If you were an ornament”

Dec. 7th – Today we are going to read How The Grinch Stole Christmas and do this lesson plan on how to identify the parts of a story.

Then for fun I’ll have them make a Christmas story starring them.

Lastly we’ll paint the play dough ornament we made yesterday, that is if they are completely dry.

Dec. 8th – We are going to read The Christmas Story and discuss the true meaning of Christmas.

Then I’ll pick a few sheets from here for them to do.

We will also get our care package out to our adopted soldier.  You can find out what I’m talking about here.

Remember to color the page for our storybook.

Dec. 9th - Have each member of the family write what they are thankful for on slips of paper, and put them on the Christmas tree, or in a special jar or stocking.  Read them aloud on Christmas Day.

Email Jesus a Happy Birthday letter.

Make candy train ornament.

Dec. 10th – Read A Stranger Child – Legend.  Then get some clothes and other things together to take to the homeless shelter.

"Whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me."  Matthew 25:40)

Dec. 11th – Read The Legend of The Candy Cane.

Make candy cane cocoa for a special treat.  You can find the recipe on the same site as the story.

For gifts make candy cane coffee spoons and reindeer ornaments.

Dec. 12th – Have them explore this site to find out how people from different countries celebrate Christmas.  Then have them notebook what they learned.

For the craft today we are going to make photo boxes.

Dec. 13th – Today we are going to do the Science lesson Crystals, Christmas, and Science.  Depending on how these turn out we may give them as gifts.

We are also going to do a mini lesson on the 12 days of Christmas song.  You can find the words to the song here.

I’ll pick a few worksheets from here for them to do.

Dec. 14th – Read The Little Matchbox Girl.

Then I’ll have them do a writing assignment using this angel shape book. It has a writing prompt on each page.

Next we’ll make some gift bags.

Dec. 15th – Don’t forget to color your page for your book.

Today we are just doing one thing.  We are going to make no sew fleece pillows.

Dec. 16th – Off to the zoo we go to see the Christmas lights.  The kids always enjoy this and we take mom’s special peppermint hot cocoa to enjoy.  While we are there we always ride the train around.

Dec. 17th – Tonight we are going to make kettle corn and spiced cider.  We will also have a Christmas movie marathon.

Dec. 18th – We are going to explore how they use to celebrate Christmas in Colonial times.

Then we’ll use a graphic organizer to compare and contrast how they differ from today.

For the craft we are going to make pastry bag packages for our gift baskets.

Dec. 19th – Today we are going to make cookies in a jar as gifts for some people.  We got our recipes from here.

The kids then will make Christmas coupon booklets for their dad and grandparents.
